@@santopino2546 Google it. Studies were conducted in this matter. And I'm from East Asia. You're not seen as special here if you have absolute pitch. It has a lot to do with the tonal languages we speak and most kids here are drilled with fixed-do solfege training when learning music.

I think it's a little dishonest to claim that Dimash can sing opera in that range and in every register as we've never once seen him sing an actual opera as a baritone or countertenor. To be honest - I've personally never seen him singing an actual tenor part either - but if he was offered a job in the Kazakh National Opera I assume he is a gifted enough operatic tenor to warrant being called such. To be able to sing opera in a certain register, you must be able to reach adequate volume to project your voice over the various accompanying instruments. To me, that's the definition of opera singing: reaching a level of audibility and clarity that you can be intelligibly heard over an orchestra, all the while maintaining an pleasurable timbre. I'm a huge fan of Dimash, but with the knowledge we as listeners have, it's not reasonable for us to conclude anything but the fact that he is a fantastic crossover singer possessing a hugely varied toolbox of expressions influenced by pop, rock, Western classical, traditional Middle Asian , and god-knows-how-many other styles of music. I'm not making this comment with any sort of pejorative connotation, as I don't think that operatic singing is above the other stylistic schools in any sort of manner. Opera is just a style of vocalization that is real loud and clear, and singers typically have very limited operatic range compared to their pop range. Comparing microphone singing (i.e. pop, rock, crossover, even broadway) with unamplified opera is like comparing tennis and squash. While excelling in either category requires a very similar skillset on the macro scale ( the macro scale being for an example "Someone who excels in sports -> Someone who excels in ball sports -> Someone who excels in racket sports"), the differences between the rulesets of both games make it so that on a micro scale ("A beginner player of racket sports -> An intermediate player of racket sports -> An expert player in one of the sports of squash/tennis") the higher a level you reach in one game, the more pronounced the rift of game-specific theoretical knowledge and mechanical skill gets between the two playerbases. I guess Dimash is like a world-class Padel (a hybrid racket sport combining elements of squash and tennis) player - it's really hard to make an assessment of where his skills sit in the grand scheme of things, in the similar-but-not-quite-the-same-game category. It's near impossible to draw the lines of comparison between an elite Padel player and the behemoths of racket sports likes of Jahangir Khan or Roger Federer's, as all of them are playing by an entirely different rulebook and aren't facing the same field of opponents. I'm not saying that you have to be a Pavarotti or a Caruso to be counted as a operatic singer, but for a vocalist in the KZfaq era, a single recorded unamplified aria would probably help with the classification.

I understand and agree with your comment about the special requirements to be considered as an "opera singer". Just because you sing "Nessum Dorma" does not mean you sang it operatically. Opera requires specific vowels, vocal timbre, vibrato and the formant that will enable the voice to carry. It takes years to develop the necessary skills, lung capacity and musculature. I have not been able to find a performance of Dimash in an opera nor where he has publicly performed an aria without a microphone. I suspect that one or both of these have happened but it would have been earlier in his career in Kazakhstan and we have limited information and videos from that era. I do not believe that Dimash could step on the stage to perform in a leading role in a full opera production without weeks of serious preparation, given the taxing demands of the artform.

@@albux That said, there is sufficient evidence of his operatic ability. To wit: Dimash trained in opera and classical singing for four years at Aktobe Music College prior to attending university for his degree in pop music. I have no reason to doubt he actually trained operatically as the completion of his degree there led to the offer for a position in the opera in Kazakhstan and he lists several operatic performers (Pavarotti among them) as inspirations. Dr. Marc Reynolds is a professor of music and an opera director at a university in Texas. He reviewed/analyzed "Ogni Pietra" and commented that he believes that Dimash could sing opera to be heard without a microphone over an orchestra. Dimash has been reviewed by a number of other opera singers with praise for his voice quality (from an operatic perspective) across his range on his performance of "Ogni Pietra". Note that in "Ogni" he switches up so that he is mostly, but not always in operatic mode, choosing to sing straight/no vibrato on the short words. There are some clips on KZfaq that give brief glimpses into his operatic voice like his lesson with a Chinese vocal coach practicing messa di voce, his impromptu rendition of "Besame Mucho" with Andrea Bocelli or singing "O Sole Mio" in between takes of a photo shoot. Last month, someone posted a duet from his college recital with piano. All of these performances are without a microphone. I have heard him in person at his New York City concert and while that was with a microphone, I was about 12 feet away the entire time. In an instant, he could swell his voice to fill the arena. That was not due to someone on the soundboard but rather Dimash switching into operatic mode.
