democracynow.org - As many as 400,000 people turned out in New York City on Sunday for the People's Climate March, the largest environmental protest in history. With a turnout far exceeding expectations, the streets of midtown Manhattan were filled with environmentalists, politicians, musicians, students, farmers, celebrities, nurses and labor activists -- all united in their demand for urgent action on climate change. Organizers arranged the People's Climate March into different contingents reflecting the movement's diversity, with indigenous groups in the lead. Democracy Now! producer Aaron Maté was in the streets to hear from some of the demonstrators taking part in the historic protest.

That many people marching could make a big difference on weed legalization!

True, but this is the issue that is actually threatening the entire planet and it's inhabitants if it is not taken care of.

It hurts to see so many people show up to a march that will and can only influence a few people. Addressing climate change is a good thing however, it can only be changed by the leaders of big industries. I believe racial issues need to be worked out through everyone. And I would appreciate the support of many more people when racial issues all brought up. What kind of climate do you really want to live in is a question I'd posed to the 400,000 people who showed up Sunday? One with clean air and still racial inequality? Because this kind of turn out can change way more if it was for a racial issue.

People I really like the idea of protecting and implementing effective mechanisms in order to save our planet and I support that. But how about starting from your self? How about being efficient, spending less water when taking a shower , when flushing the toilet when buying plastic bottles and not returning them for in order to be recycled. I think the first change come from us ourselves.

Did that really happen? Funny thing, I didn't see anything about it on the Mainstream Media. Gee, I wonder why...

I see fossil fuels everywhere. From the fossil fuels burned to get them there, to their food, and clothes. How many of the participants walked to the event? They should also be wearing animal skins and hunt and bows and arrows.

All first generation clean energy and products and services are going to be made using fossil fuels, period. So those are your choices - use fossil fuels to stay the course of fossil fuels and suffer the consequences, or use fossil fuels to go in a new direction and reap the rewards. That's what happens when you try to attack new ideas on the very same grounds that your own ideas stand on - you don't prove anything except how dumb you are.

You must be from the U.S. I don't think race is such a big issue here in Canada. I've dated every colour and did the Captain Kirk thing. Most people I know have done the same. I have been to the U.S. and I've seen what you're talking about. The U.S. isn't the world my friend, it's one country. You'd be surprised of how different the world truly is. I came across a show you might want to watch to change your perspective a little. It's called "Idiot Abroad". It's about a British white idiot traveling the world. Perhaps that might educate some people if it were in the school system. I doubt many older adults would understand it, but the kids will. They're smarter then their parents as always, but the show you can see an idiot turn into a sound mind and it's a way to travel the world without traveling the world. Enjoy the show.

mist3r I can understand your frustration, but racism in America is an institution in and of itself. African Americans are going to have to take up their banner and fight and contribute financially to the cause against racism. We can't keep looking for everyone else to come and save us. When we begin the process of supporting ourselves then everyone else will follow. Not to make light of African American plight, but the environment is another issue that effects us as well. The most effected by climate change are the poor and so called minorities. They live on lands and in areas that are consumed by pollutants right down to the soil where whole communities are suffering from some sort of asthma, cancer, birth defects. We as African American must take on a larger role and contribute our voices in all areas that affect us and our world as a whole. If environmentalism is not your thing, then create an organization to combat racism and work towards that end. I guarantee you the as you build your organization, climate change will be amongst a racial issue as well. Good luck.

Doingwhat isnecessary You seem like good people and I am equally as political about the environment as well as justice for all. You're absolutely on the money about many of the real problems. Glad to see that.
