Basso cantante is the singing lyric bass voice for roles like Don Giovanni or Mephostopholies. They need a range of low F to high f or g. A basso profundo has the lowest voice and not many operatic roles, Russian choral more their forte.

I completely agree. Being very clueless when it comes to opera, as although I love it, I'm more a fan of singing and voices in whatever style, I did put 'black male opera singer' into the search bar. I realised that this is something I've never heard. Really, I'm searching for a bass singer - someone like Barry White singing opera, purely for listening pleasure, to hear the low tones like his in the style of opera. If anyone reading this can recommend someone that would be great :)

Simon Estes, Bass-Baritone or Solomon Howard, Bass are just two examples of famous or famed Black Male singers who have the low extension of a Barry White but they are just classically trained to sing the great operatic music!

I see what you mean, but are there any opera with black themes and stories? Most opera roles are reserved for whites and the stories involve white characters. However, in America, they had the first I think opera with a majority black cast based on Toni Morrison's "Beloved". I can't think of any other opera that tells a black story.

We know that music has no colour every country having more than one style of music. Its about adopting another country's certain style of music, i.e. opera for Caribbean people who had been slaves. How about the Innuit becoming expert at Socca music and competing with Trinidadians? Italians, French, Germans, etc. may think that opera genre is their turf. We already see white youngsters adopting certain dances from Africa, and I do not think this is very much appreciated by the adults.

I do understand your statement, however, I am 60 and have performed with symphonies all over singing arias from many operas but have never been on an actual opera stage. I still perform as of today. Opera has many vices to keep black males at bay, age, character intention by the composer, culture period and at times questioning your skillset regardless of what they hear. If Opera were golf the green jacket has never been worn by a black male, so the subtle underlying message here is, we exist. Even like me, I have sung professionally as bass as well as a tenor...(only headphones will give you clarity) sort of a pirated recording of me switching from (Chest Baritone) to a Light operatic (popra tenor)and back. @@West-Telecom I love the celebration of Black opera. I believe there are many talented opera singers however, I would like you to look at the history of blacks in opera. I'm not speaking of concert opera. Look at the story of Matilda Ciceretta Jones or Elizabeth Greenfield. Look at the history since Price and Norman. I have an issue when those that have and still use qualifiers try to turn the story around on those the qualifiers were used against.

Hi Edward he certainly was a bass and most recordings were designed to show off the depths of the voice , sorry I might have just typed Bass Baritone automatically if I had been listening to several singers in a row or just wasn't concentrating. Having said that it would be interesting to hear what happened if he had decided to lighten the tone a little rather than sit in the deep notes all the time ( for which he was famous and which the public expected) and the last phrases of Old Man River reveal the ability to sustain high phrases with a surprising amount of ring and resonance. When we hear the lower, full toned part of the voice it is all the more impressive to find that he could produce such a generous sound at the top too.

Tenortalker He probably was a lyrical/high bass which can sing higher but his deep tones are of a true bass in my opinion. Bass baritones use a more head voice mixture in the lower tones vs a bass.

Fair and interesting comment Edward. Of course this way of categorising different shades of the same voice type that we are discussing is really a late 19th / 20th century invention and was originally a kind of shorthand code for the casting of operatic roles. Also the categories are not quite the same in say France or Germany. If Robeson had performed in opera ( in fact he publicly rejected the idea as not relating to his heritage and of course there were still many prejudices to be overcome in opera houses) I wonder which roles would have suited him best?
