One bit of knowledge-less speculation on my part: I wonder if when Lillie asked for her "mother" to know she was grateful, the Void Lords monkey-paw'd again - while Lillie seems to have intended this to refer to Grey, Grey isn't technically her mother... *Lily* is. So after the court is disrupted, we see Lillie holding *Lily*, not Grey, because monkey-paw.

Only one detail I disagree with, the conversation of someone being named lillith/ the brightest star, I think it is spoken between Gray and Princess Lilly's mother, not Grey and Princess lilly. Why? Because 1) there isn't a moment in the timeline where Lilly and Grey talk about the unborn baby but there is time for Grey to talk to the Queen before princess lilly's birth, 2) the conversation implies that Grey thinks (lillith) is too long of a name ('too sophisticated for my tastes') and shortened it to Lilly, which makes why both princess Lilly and Modern Lillie are named the same thing, Grey can't let go of * Lillith * weather it's the mother Lilly or the daughter Lillie, it also reinforces the burden Grey put upon herself, the promise she made to the Queen, to protect her family line no matter the cost. They's why she appears at the Queen's grave during her final silent goodbye to Modern Lillie, and that I believe is the face Tail is wearing, (which is why they looks like lilly/lillie because each daughter looks like their mother) the Queen is Grey's one true love and her promise to the Queen defines the rest of her life. We never see the queen alive in game because Grey will never see her again. This also explains why Grey takes unborn Modern Lillie without consulting Princess Lilly, Grey has already made the choice, of protecting the child at the expense of the parent, before and projects what The Queen wanted for Lilly unto Lilly in that moment. Not to knock the idea that Grey was going to train Lilly to go save her mother in Grey's place, that was also the plan, both ideas factor into why Grey Choose what she did.

This is the only video with an explanation of the story. Please make part 2. I really want to know what happens in act 3.

Great video, I enjoyed watching it. Your analysis on Cif possibly being Four Eyes in the final cutscene of Void Stranger Gray, along with the theory that the Queen is Void Lord Add were ones I hadn't considered before, but were quite good. The Queen being Add would also help explain why Gray was safe from Johann's lightning strike in front of the grave. As for if Lillie knew about the choice or not, my assumption is that she didn't, but her idea of "choice" was to raise her at all instead of give her up for adoption or something along those lines. One other piece of speculation/insight is that Johann's lightning powers didn't kill people but instead sent them to the void. This would explain how the bandit who appeared in the third cutscene of Gray's campaign, appeared in Lillie's campaign, despite presumably being killed with the lightning. (you killed him quickly and unceremoniously in your playthrough, but I believe it is the same bandit, as he eludes to Gray). It would also give further evidence to the old man being the King, as he most likely would've been at the wedding ceremony and been struck with Johann's lightning.

Thank you for discussing the story to this underrated gem of a game. Its an amazing narrative with an interesting way of being told but I, and probably many others, don't have the time nor patience to go through all 255 floors without making a single mistake. I managed to make it as far as floor 100 but basically gave up after. Also on the thing about hair. Considering the mysterious old man in Act 2 is confused about Lillie's hair, if he is the king then its possible the culture of the kingdom or country where the kingdom was at the time had women grow out their hair. Lily has long hair as well. Maybe that's why Grey was mad, because to her, short hair is the opposite to her standards of beauty. Also I find it interesting the old man says "So that's what the world has turned into". Almost as if he knows the world outside the tower has changed since he entered.

Fantastic analysis, you picked up on so many interesting details I had either forgotten about or not noticed at all, and it was really cool to hear all those theories. I am super glad you did/were able to take the time to do this analysis for yourself, as well as shown to us viewers. The four-eyes/Cif connection is not something I picked up when I played through. Love some of the stuff you picked up, is very clever, have enjoyed greatly enjoyed seeing you experience this game, and can't wait for you to continue down, as well as maybe pick up some other details not yet picked up on.

I really appreciated this recap. The lore dive was a great refresher of everything going on, and I'm glad that I wasn't too far off of this explanation at the end of the last episode. I hadn't noticed Cif in any of the earlier cutscenes, nor the parallels to Dante's Inferno (which I now feel I should look into). Now if you'll excuse me, I've gotta catch up in my playthrough because I want to experience Act 3 without spoilers. Or... any more spoilers than we got to see at the end of the last episode.

Incredible analysis

This was a fun video, and it's interesting to see the conclusions other people take from the story. I'm not going to go on about anything in Cif's playthrough since it's clear you were getting to that. A major thing that stood out to me while playing which I didn't see mentioned here was the lesbian subtext around Gray. I agree that Tail probably does look like Lily's mom to Gray, and Gray was clearly extraordinarily devoted to Lily's mom. Amorously, as Tail hints in her convo with Lillie. I also got powerful lesbian (or maybe queer platonic) vibes between Gray and Freya. Could have been one-sided, and also could be because I was primed to see it due to other parts of the story. What really put it together for me was how Gray reacted to Lillie's haircut. I really think it had nothing to do with mystic power or mythological allusions. "You know what they say about women with hair like that." The "modern" Finland we see in Lillie's story is not quite present-day, but actually around the 90s and early 2000s. I can't say for sure for Finland (I'm American), but even at that time, homophobia was a powerful force in mainstream Western society. It makes sense to me that a (possibly closeted?) queer woman was sensitive about the appearance of gayness in that environment. It's unclear if it was really a problem in the "past" setting of the game, but Gray struck me as pretty cagey whenever Lily's mom came up. (Another contribution to Gray's bad modern-day reaction to Lillie could be attributed to the fact that Lillie bore a powerful resemblance to her bio mother which was emphasized by the long hair.) Many many many more concrete things come up with - - Cif - - (Lucifer, all the Void Lords are 3 letters from a famous demon's name) and especially the DIS finale. I'll definitely be checking out your later videos to see what you think! (Also you should play Zero Ranger... for reasons. The main one being that it's an awesome game.)

Awesome video, but i noticed something in your analysis section that i thought to add. All of the void lords are actually present in the story in one form or another, and are mentioned by the rocks in their respective layers, or by NPCs you may encounter. They also seem to represent the seven deadly sins. Eus is Lust (Tail takes the appearance of someone's true love) Mon is Greed (A hint trader that tells you shortcuts if you have enough locus idols on hand) Bee is Gluttony (Would eat locus idols with Add, but couldn't taste anything so Bee kept eating more and more, even after Add left) Tan is Wrath (Wishes to be left alone, and was struck down due to their uncontrollable rage around others) Gor is Sloth (Begs for death due to not being able to move) Lev is Envy (Doesn't have a mouth, so Add gave the other void lords horns so they could communicate telepathically, which lead Lev to question why they couldn't speak) Cif is Pride (who's own actions lead to their name being scrubbed from mention in the rest of the tower)

I'm excited to watch all of this instead of trying to piece together the last 70 hrs of gameplay I've gone through 😅

I was just looking for cutscenes after doing a normal playthrough but this video is even better with chronological ordering and analysis added. A shame so much interesting stuff is locked behid playing the same levels again and again.

So Grey True love was Princess Lily mother which show why she is so devoted to the royal family especially the daughter and daughter daughter and how she reacts to Lillie when she talks about having some action in bed when her true love is dead long ago

33:44 Bee could be referring to Lillie's presence in the Void itself. They haven't met before this, right? In that case, "invited" may refer to who opened a portal so that she could enter, which could only have been Cif,and Bee is asking the question more as a cheeky guess or rhetorical jab.

Johann potentially did kill her at the grave it is shown that it is not enough to kill her through the DIS ending for reasons, also the void lords take words extremely literally so when Lillie references her mom in terms of her contract that means Lily and not Gray even if Lillie is thinking about Gray while saying it. Also this analysis is missing the DIS portion of the story so it makes sense the context they provide aren't mentioned in this video.

Regarding 1:03:07 LAYER 2: Eus is dead. Tail is a new being that grew from a remnant after Eus' death. She is not Eus. Eus, idols, while not found on normal floors due to their status as a traitor, still exist, and if made to fall into a pit, will create floor in that space. LAYER 4: Belongs to Mon; the "kshi shi shi" one who takes all your locusts in exchange for hints. As one of the traitors, their statues have been destroyed or removed from the main floors of the void, but still exist in hidden spaces. The statues share Mon's own ability to turn those in their line of sight into gold. While I can't quite figure out what the mural says, what is utterly certain is: "O___PL______ED__MAI__" / with an obvious inference it becomes "ONLYPL______EDREMAINS". Based on the alphabet given in floors 228-253, The uncertain letter could be(in order) (PL) 1: (completely unreadable) 2: A/C/I/K 3: J/K/N/O/Z 4: E/G/M/O 5: P/Q/R/S/X/Y/Z 6: (completely unreadable) (ED) I can't figure out what that might be, aside from that it is almost certainly not one word. LAYER 5: Belongs to Tan, the Raging. On floor 139 the NPC is a sulking young girl who wants to be left alone. She is abrasive and rude regardless of who you speak to her with, and due to the Tan idols on the floor, you cannot progress without either killing her or using a Bee idol to skip ahead. If you do not have wings, she lashes out and pushes you(down a pit, to your death(and, in my own personal case, my first game over)) LAYER 6: Belongs to Gor. The mural is fully readable under certain circumstances, and says "ONLYFEEBLEREMAINS". Gor herself is described repeatedly as feeble, apathetic, indecisive, and guilty of inaction. Therefore I would think she better describes the cardinal sin of Sloth, rather than heresy. Gor was one of the traitors, and as such her statues don't exist on normal floors. When found regardless, they become immobile after being pushed once. LAYER 7: Belongs to Lev. Despite their mural saying "a envy", they're only really described by rocks as having been unwaveringly loyal to Add. If they have any relation to envy, i can't see it. There is more I could say about Lev, but that touches on spoilers beyond the scope of the video. The NPC on this floor only appears as Lillie, on (roughly) floor 175 or so, and is a shy, nervous girl who introduces herself as Ninnie. If you talk to her repeatedly and then show her use of the void staff, she asks to come along with you, and will(while cheering you on and providing genuinely useful hints) provided you ensure there's a clear path from her to the exit on each floor. Until floor 192. We don't talk about floor 192. LAYER8: Cif's brand, while not directly readable, contains too few tiles to be any more than simply "ONLYREMAINS". Which may also be an inference to something like "only emptiness remains", or "only void remains", "nothing remains", or possibly meaning something more like "i do naught but remain". Also, floor 223 does exist. It just cannot be reached by normal means. LAYER9: Contains *your* brand if you ate the fruit. Contains an empty mural if you did not. Looking at it as Cif implies that this mural is related to DIS. This area subsequent to the mural contains the alphabet used to actually read the murals yourself, as well as...other secrets... later. 1:05:50 - DIS does not reside on floor255.

At 50:00 you mention not having hp at the end of your playthrough. At the end of mine I saw that despite not running out of locusts in the last chambers the hp was saying Voided anyways, so I think that's just Lillie's character

At this point I understand most of the story up until after the final big boss fight

i'm still curious on how void stranger's story coincides with zeroranger's (spoilers for both games obviously including some of VS secrets not covered in the video) examples like zero judge's eerie similarity to a certain character from ZR and how they mentioned that they chose lily because "she reminded them of someone", the flower and star depiction when gray was telling lillie the bedtime story looking like ZR's lotus jewel, mon literally having one of the lotus jewel's symbols written on the piece of fabric(?) over their eyes, and a lot of other references which may or may not be just that - references or jokes, including but not limited to: both games sharing the same yet different title music, many of the game's songs having motifs from ZR especially despair's theme, but also others like "it may be greenish", the words "the adventure of life goes on" in one of the endings is also the name of the game over music in ZR, and lastly to note (although this is highly likely just a joke because it's in a secret, most likely non-canon, ending) THE DAMN ONIONS appearing in the carcass ending

i think the story is a time loop. Civ is so envious and in rage, using DIS to break time, and using Add's memory core to pin point the exact timeline. That's why the ancient civilization had 1st hand witness of the fall of DIS. Lily is brought back into past as well, but the old void lords will disappear. however, Add/gray will create them again, to find Lily's memory and initiate the loop again. Resulting the system only recognises Lily and no one else. It's larger than "gray has made a promise with Lily's mother ". Gray and Lily's fate might intertwined so much, it's akin to lovers reincarnate again to fall in love again. But i admit i cant figure out why ancient add the scientist is looking for lily. is it because of the void egg? or the void egg is the actual DIS. either way, its a love story, beyond time, space, stereotypes, conventions. i had recently exposed to games like this recently, such as signalis. I think it is a great idea. something about love, being simple or pure, free of confines, but unobtainable, impossible, compromised, and screw up monkey paw situation.

9:50 I mean it is also rare but possible for a normal human to survive a lightning strike. Maybe his spell only has the strength of an average lightning bolt, so it was possible to survive. Very very unlikely to happen in real life, but this is a fantasy story so unlikely things can occur. Or maybe it was further meddling from one of the Void Lords, not wanting to lose Gray yet so the effectiveness of the lightning power was momentarily altered.

55:24 I'd say this is Lily's mom and Gray speaking and Lillie was named by Gray after her mother without Lily. What Lily was trying to tell Gray I think was that she was pregnant, but was cut off by the eclipse which was to setup the pregnant reveal.

there is so much more to this game than I thouhg... I did 1 playthrough of beating all the puzzles but never rested at a tree so I didnt get no lore and kinda gave up when I looped back to the begining u_u

First of all, this is a great recap/deep dive. I've watched a lot of stuff about this game in the last month, and you still hit on several good points I haven't seen anyone else address. Regarding my comment on the last video: despite "Your Highness" vs. "Your Majesty", I personally have a hard time hearing Lily in the conversation about the sophisticated name. Lily is less about hoping her child will "shine just as bright" and more about her child "kicking ass", tone-wise, based on her style of speaking both before and after her time spent in Void stasis. (I actually started watching a playthrough in Finnish recently, and I'm curious if anything happened in translation.) You say you don't see why Four-Eyes would also be Cif in the present day, but I don't see why not, considering everything that's established about how Cif is watching the goings-on. Heck, maybe Cif wanted them to live there because it's a spot where Cif can easily open a Square Hole to Hell later on. (I've seen exactly one person notice something related to the previous paragraph that's very easy to miss, that you didn't catch [yet], but I don't want to be specific because it's very technically a spoiler?) It's tough to talk about a lot of the things in here because I have more knowledge than Past Brian, and I don't know how much knowledge Present Brian has, but I'm going to hit on a couple that I think are reasonably self-contained: 1) In Lillie's first encounter with the letter, I feel very certain that she is NOT about to read it. The sound effect is a sudden thump, and when the visuals resume, the letter is sitting in the waste bin next to the desk. The sound effect the second time around is different--it's the sound of an envelope being torn open. 2) You showed a chart listing various things about the nine realms of the void and comparisons to Dante's Inferno. I was a little surprised that you didn't comment on at least one thing that didn't line up quite right, and why it didn't. (I don't want to be more specific than that, but it was something that I would expect someone to notice before noticing the deeper Dante stuff.) 3) There was something in the visuals of the "bedtime story" about the tower and the dark star that you didn't comment on, but I don't want to say what it was because I couldn't tell if you didn't comment because you didn't notice it, or because you did and thought it wasn't particularly noteworthy. Okay, this comment is already a novel. I look forward to more playthrough, as well as the follow-up to this video I'm sure is going to happen. 😄

13:15 I believe Four Eyes has always been Cif. First, Cif's true form has 4 eyes, a prominent enough feature that it is the only discernable one on her statues. Second, Four Eyes gets no dialogue portrait even though much less important characters such as the bandit get one. Third, he's also the realtor who sells Gray the modern house, which has a history of hauntings probably due to the void hole in the bedroom. This seems to imply that he's ageless and immortal, though doesn't explain why Gray doesn't recognize him. Maybe she wasn't really paying attention? Or that we never see a portrait of him because Gray never did remember his face? Either way, it's a simpler explanation that Cif has been guiding them all along and mostly feigning incompetence, than that there's a separate non-Cif character who appears so often and does so little.

I think there might be more to the hair thing as Lillie was able to make it through the Void with short hair. It's just that with the hair cut Modern Lillie not longer resembles Princess Lily. And I wonder if Grey not only viewed Modern Lillie as a weapon, but also as a replacement for Princess Lily. I think a part of her refused to see her as her own person, which is what led to the strain in their relationships. Also I think Grey was in love with Princess Lily's mother, hence the appearance of Tail and her devotion to Princess Lily.

17:18 It was stated by Cif I believe that "Time moves differently down here" (in the void), suggesting that time travel is a sort of inevitability of being in the void. As for the reason she ends up in modern times, my theory is that Gray is sent by Judge to exactly a point in time where she and the fetus are most likely to survive. After all, if she was sent back to her time, there's no way the medical systems of that time could save a premature fetus. By being sent to the modern age, to that specific road crossing on that night, Freya finds her and takes her in, ensuring she gets the help and care she needs.

The purchasable photos in the menu are all of modern Lillie, the game does a good job at making us think that it is princess Lillie. but they are all of Gray raising modern Lillie.

havent seen if its discussed in the video yet, but tail (a last remnant of Eus) takes the form of your true love. Gray looks at them and sees the queen. You pointed out that the dancing shadows were likely Gray and the queen. The Queen in the dance has the same hairstyle, the same bun, and similar features with Lillie. So. I almost cried at that. Also Cif when talking to big head Gor mentions "Weird to see you *up* here." So the tower isnt going down. You are indeed going up. Its just backward. Also, did you find the womb room?

Anyone knows where I could get more information about DIS ? And about what happens in the future (I think we see a few short futuristic scenes in the game), why this all is a computer program we can interact with and glitch, what's with the scientists we see at the end ? That's the most interesting part of this story to me and everyone seems to overlook it, that leaves me pretty frustrated

Very surprised you didn't point out how the face beneath the judge's mask strongly resembles Add (or rather who we believe Add to be). Also, you said 'a sword' on the queen's grave, but that's a star dude. It's the star from the stain glass window. The star from the mythology. And the star from Lillie's halloween costume. Also, the tower in the storybook is obviously the Tower of Babel. The vision that Lillie has depicts a bunch of space ships being blown up when the dark star falls to earth. You can see the dark star actually emerges from the large black hole looking thing before falling off screen and then the camera starts tracking it. When the judge's mask shatters, you can see a face reflected briefly in one of the shards of glass. Can't make out much, but they appear to be smiling and wearing glasses. Cif again?

Comparing DIS to satan is actually a great comparison, for reasons I suspect you may not know yet.

Grey and Johan had no affair. Nothing was implied and it goes against Grey's character in every way. The king likely saw his wife as his true love, not his daughter. WTF. "No matter the reason she chose me" was stated because adopting a kid is a choice, not because she was aware of the lily vs lillie choice. Grey didnt raise Lillie to enter the dungeon, she had no way to get back after all.

Thank you for creating this video so I wouldn't need to suffer the remainder of the game to suss out the rest of the story. I don't see why people are so impressed with the game. The music is pretty good, and it's probably great for puzzle lovers, but the story... like I said elsewhere- just play Inmost or Wandersong. They're vastly superior to this edgy quirkfest.

The game is cool but it has, as unnecessary convoluted as it is, pretty shallow story The writer are trying a bit too hard with a jumble of ideas like AI, alien, time travel, fantasy that doesn't really connect well
