Voigtlander 28mm f2: My No Good, Terrible Experience

I recently picked up a Voigtlander 28mm f2 from B&H here in New York. Although the lens was listed as an 8+ on the site, I knew something had to be off when I unboxed the lens and found it to be in like-new condition. What made things worse... the box still had a receipt from someone who had purchased the lens used only a month before. Sadly, the lens is going back, but I thought it would be good to share my experience.

My guess is that the lens was dropped at some point and caused an element to shift out of alignment. This is really too bad through and they shouldn’t have sold the lens to you.

I once purchased a new tripod from B&H that arrived damaged. asked for replacement. they agreed. I sent it back and then received the same tripod repacked. when i told them about it they didn't believe me, but after some time finally received full refund. Another time they sent me a wrong hard drive and refused to provide free shipping label for return. these are 2 bad experiences out of about 100 positive, so i forgive them.

I had the same with a Zeiss Planar and it was poor factory quality. Sent it to a lens specialist and it’s now perfect. Seems Cosina can be a bit slack on quality.

This is the 28 f2 ultron right? Ive heard so many good things about it, this particular lens may just be a 1-off dud

Yeah, I’ve heard a lot of great things too. I came across some people having the same issues. It must be a few that slip through the cracks. I have other Voigtlander lenses that are wonderful. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@ShawnPBruce yes same here, I have a few and have not come across this issue at all (nor with any other lenses). Hope you get one that works soon

@@ShawnPBruce Buddy of mine had it on his M8. Incredibly soft lens, lots of chromatic abberation... not my cup of tea at all. The new version of this lens is supposed to be a dramatic improvement, able to compete with the 28mm Summicron. I wouldn't let this sour your experience with Voigtlander lensed!

The old 28mm Ultron was quite soft. I also sold mine off too. There is a newer version but once bitten twice shy.

There’s a version 2 of this lens now! I understand your experience may have just been a bad copy, but the new version too also has improved optics and better overall sharpness. It’s a tad more expensive, but you should check it outb

28 is a focal I want edge to edge which means aspherical design. So it rules out a lot of vintage stuff. Leica Elmarit is still 2k used. I guess this is why I keep the Ricoh GR.

That’s true. I sold my GR a few weeks ago. I can’t decide if I made a mistake. It’s such a great camera.

@@ShawnPBruce Might have to try the 7Artisans 28mm on the M. I really wish Fuji had remade the 18/2 like the 27/2.8 rather than coming out with the 18/1.4. I don't want a big 28mm equivalent. I want a street lens.

Ah... buy another version of the same lens... you can see from other reviews that not all of them back focus so badly at F2.

I bought another one but it had issues with a loose aperture ring. I ultimately decided to get a Leica 28mm instead.

Hi sorry to hear that, but it's weird I actually just bought one myself today and mine's doing well. I had this exact experience when I bought Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 MC Classic. It focus shift open wide at further distance. I think it's bad QC on Voigtlander side. I think you should try to find the same one again but this time you have to try first and inspect accordingly. Because for the price, it is very good (my copy at least). Hope this help.

Thanks! Yeah, I’m going to try another one I think. Trying to decide if it’s worth getting the newer version. Apparently it’s incredible. Glad to hear you’re having success with yours!

@@ShawnPBruce the newer version is definitely better in terms of corner sharpness and how it handle flares. But it cost more, and there's a catch, the newer version focuses closer up to 50 cm and there's no indication to let you know you're at 70cm close focusing distance like the 35mm f2 APO from Leica. So you might end up turning the lens far left not knowing you are at 50cm whilst the range finder is telling you, you're focused. For me personally it is a problem since I'm using the M10-D so I can't use live view. I personally love the characteristic of the old one better and it is cheaper. But it is subjective and depends on your need. Good luck and hope you find yours.

Oh! I’m glad you said something. I didn’t realize the minimum focus distance was different. That’s not really a lens for me then.

I'd a number of Voigtländer lenses too, but they aren't that great. I still have a Zeiss 50/1.5 which is great, but it'll also go in part exchange with a new Leica 21/3.4. It's better to have a set of top lenses from Leica then a bunch of glass, that doesn't meet your needs. Well, it's a question of money, but at the end, the quality will remain long after the price is forgotten. For my M-P 240 I've Summilux 50, a Summarit 90/2.5 and soon the 21/3.4. If you want a 28 for your M240, then look at a second hand Q. You'll get an extra camera body for free. That's a great deal. The Summarit range is not top noch as the Summicron or Summilux, but worth to try. I'm not found of 35 because it's too close to my 50 - I'm a 50 mm guy - but not wide enough to be a real wide angel. Keep on rolling.
