Replacing the timing belt and water pump on a 2004 Volkswagen 2.0 Beetle(98-05). This is a known problem with these and a metal impeller water pump is definitely recommended vs OE plastic impeller. Don't forget to drain coolant beforehand, I didn't because I thought it was dry. Job went smooth. An extra set of hands would make it easier but can be done by yourself. A mirror could be used in place of the scope i used to set the tensioner. Bent needle nose pliers worked ok in place of the tensioner tool.

Thank you for making a straight forward video on the how too.. I'm a 30+ur diesel guy, I work on the big boy toys so when he said his vw beetle was throwing a cam and crank sensor I already knew I didn't know crap diddly, u were the very first video that cam up, Son.. u need to make more videos, and keep doing an awesome job buddy... I'll subscribe and I'll make that bell ring .. very much enjoyed it content, now if you'll excuse me.... I have some cursing to go do under a bright yellow beetle 😂😎

Ugh...most all the videos on this job will tell you what needs to be done and show you the finished work... like installing the tensioner properly!. I can't get it on without moving off my timing marks. Would have been nice to see just HOW! you got the belt on with the tensioner.

If its an 8valve 2.0, according to the dealer, its non interference, the engine. But if its a 16 valve, its interference.

GOOD VIDEO But I think you are using the wrong antifreeze you should be using the orange color depending on the heads Green is for steel heads and the orange is for aluminum Thanks for the help

Oem coolant is G12 which I've found is usually more of a pink color. You're absolutely right though, that green stuff is incorrect!

I changed the timing belt of this bug two times by two different mechanics, but Everytime they destroy the cam shaft positiong sensor, and I had to go back to them with new sensor and additional charges to change, can you mention how not to spoil that sensor? Thank you

I see u timed it up with the old belt then put the new belt on and rotated it twice so I assume it is best to time the camshaft with the crankshaft gear so how did it crank up after u finished

Is this a gasoline or diesel engine? My daughter bought a 2005 beetle 2.0 GLS. I plan on doing some work on it and wanted to know if this is the same procedure to change the water pump on that engine?

Sorry for late response, just saw this now. This was on a 2.0 non turbo gas engine
