BUY, LEASE OR FINANCE A VOLKSWAGEN ID.3 FROM OSV: bit.ly/3e5ciEz
The ID.3 will change the way you think about Volkswagen. And, the brand hopes, it'll change the way you think about affordable electric cars. This contender is priced, shaped and designed right for the heart of the family segment of the growing EV sector and, unlike previous battery-powered Volkswagens, it's completely new from the ground up. It's small enough for the city and big enough for the family. Plus it's as affordable as a comparable petrol or diesel model and clever enough to make a conventional family hatchback seem hopelessly outdated. The future's arrived.

Background
So far, there have been two eras in Volkswagen's history. The first post-war period of the Beetle. And the second modern era, dominated by the company's biggest-selling model, the Golf. The third period starts now with this car, the ID.3, the first of many products from the Wolfsburg maker's new ID all-electric sub-brand.
We've had all-electric Volkswagens before of course (the e-Golf and the e-up!) but they've been based on the underpinnings of ordinary combustion models. The ID range will be very different, created around a purpose-designed MEB electrified platform and built at a bespoke EV factory in Zwickau near Dresden. Ten new ID-series designs to be manufactured at this facility will be launched between now and 2025, including an SUV, a 7-seater, a luxury saloon, a coupe and commercial vehicles. The first offering though, is this ID.3, a Golf-sized hatch with Passat-sized interior space. And technology that aims to make you think again if you haven't yet considered a switch to electric motoring.
Driving Experience
Let's cover what you need to know here: there are three choices of powertrain for the ID.3, with battery packs rated at 45, 58 and 77kWh, allowing for respective WLTP-rated driving range figures of up to 217, up to 260 and up to 342 miles. Plus there are two electric motor options, rated at 150PS and 204PS, both of which drive the rear wheels through a single-speed auto gearbox. It's the mid-level 58kWh battery package with the 204PS electric motor that is likely to prove most popular. Even if budget limits you to the base 45kWh variant with its 150PS motor, it'll still feel quite rapid, with 62mph from just just 8.9s away. All ID.3 models have the same limited 99mph top speed.
To fire everything up, you hit the starter button, then activate the gear selector, a rocker switch mounted on the steering column that twists in two directions: it's forward for 'drive' and the braking regeneration modes, And you twist back for neutral and reverse. Acceleration has been programmed to be linear and consistent rather than arriving all-in-a-rush, though the top 77kWh version can get to 62mph in 7.5s. Top speed across the range is limited to around 100mph. And weight has been kept to reasonable levels (1,670kgs is relatively light for an EV) which should help handling. As is now compulsory for Evs, there's a pedestrian warning buzzer which works at under 12mph to warn pavement folk of your approach. The super-tight 10.2-metre turning circle is closer to that of an up! city car than a Golf.
Design and Build
The styling here's conservatively futuristic and this is a slightly larger car than pricier EV rivals like the Renault ZOE and the BMW i3: it's also a little bigger than a comparable Golf. Measurements of 4,261mm in length and 1,809mm in width make the ID.3 23mm longer and 20mm wider than a MK8 Golf - and this EV is 60mm taller too, thanks to the need for battery installation in the thicker floor. There's a swept-back windscreen (raked to better accommodate the head-up display system). Plus a black plastic panel beneath it styled to trick your eye into believing that the bonnet is shorter than it actually is. And the ID.3 generally rides on big 19 or 20-inch wheels.

The electricity used to charge an EV doesn't have to come with a CO2 penalty if its acquired from a Renewable energy provider. That is getting better all the time as renewables take over from Coal and Gas providers

I don't believe that you are British. Only a German can understand that level of complication. I bought a Tesla, it was basically three decisions. Range, exterior color, and interior color (a whopping two choices). That was actually a phenomenal review, you really know the details. The big picture is that VW offers all kinds of options yet the electronics don't meet the mark. Tesla nails the electronics and keeps the decision making simple.

Probably the best review on youtube. Clear and detailed. I would have pointed out that the front design wasnt “inspired by nature” and more inspired by the trend of fake exhaust pipes et al. They put it there to pretend it has more of an ICE style front grill. Other than that, a decent attempt by VW. The sooner we can get away from burning dinosaur juice the better. Was at the lights behind a diesel car today and it absolutely stank. If VW and co can sink some of those 10's billions into making batteries lighter and cheaper, so we havent got the weight of a baby elephant in the back seat (with hit on suspension, brakes, ride comfort, range) and dont have to counter the expensive tech by using cheap materials, then the world can move forward.

A great review but the the We Connect ID app is very limited and cant unlock the car, just control preheating/cooling and charging. The app also shows the position of your phone instead of the position of the car - seems a stupid decision. Knowing where the car is would have been of more use, especially for tracking if stolen.

Great review. A fantastic and landmark car. I have test driven most evs between 30 and 40k (inc model 3) and this is the one I am choosing. Gets everything just about right. Interface software is much improved then on launch, however probably needs a few more releases to smooth out completey. ID.4 is also great for those that want slight more rear passenger or boot space (it is only slightly) for an extra £5k, but actually I like the trim of the ID.3 slightly better, although the ID.4 is still nice, if a bit funky

Another excellent review and presentation! I have to wonder how Tesla, who had to work out how to design and then build cars, the factories and the production lines, the market leading EV motor technology, the associated software including Autopilot and on top of that design and build the Supercharger Networks. Volkswagen only had to do two of those things - design and build EV tech and design and implement the associated software - and even then they ballsed it up. I cant get over the pricing, these new EVs are massively less complicated than the ICE cars previously built, so why are they in fact dearer?? I cant get my head around it yet.
@GeordiLaForgery
@GeordiLaForgery 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah one theory is the high prices are deliberate to keep the ICE cars selling.
@chrispenn715

I agree with you - although I suspect costs are higher due to the cost of materials for the batteries and the need to recoup investment costs. That's how markets tend to go - eg look at the price of LED lightbulbs a few years ago - they were much more expensive than traditional glass lamps, but have now become much cheaper. EV's will probably follow a similar path. For me, the ID3 is also disappointing in the quality - for example, that glovebox looks rougher than the one in my last Dacia, whereas out 2017 Golf had a felt lined glovebox. Okay, so that's not a showstopper, but it is indicative of the cheapness built in to the ID3. Maybe things will look up in a year or two at the mid-life refresh?
@davidjohn0505

I totally agree......they have made a real mess. They have almost rushed this vehicle out with the horrible plastics and the cheap looking screens.....why on earth did they not make the two screens integrated into the dash. It just looks cheap and not luxury. It’s a real disappointment. I think I would rather have a Golf GTE and then you would have best of both worlds and probably would be cheaper. And if I was going for luxury I would go for Mercedes EQA. It’s a nice looking design let down by cheap looking interiors

Americans do not buy an electric car primarily because it is environmentally friendly but because it is modern (the computer) and has fast acceleration. and it probably requires the car's software to work as well and be as innovative as an iphone or samsung mobile. and that it should above all be able to show basic facts during the charging of the battery. and that it could show to the map which charging station is available and which charging stations are charging fast

I may get a EV when my lease is up on my current car but only if lease prices on EV cars go down to similar petrol varients....EV cars are still way too expensive monthly also my insurance is more expensive on a EV car. I read a article published claiming people's insurance is cheaper with EV cars which is false as alot of people it is more...for me it's nearly £50 more a month....not happening. I would not save much on fuel costs with a EV either because I do not drive far....each month I put £25 of petrol in and it lasts till next payday and I've got about 40 miles left in still from before And no tax on lease cars so that's not a saving either. Plus I am sure for a home wallbox out electrics need upgrading or atleast a new fuse because it's the same electrics that were in when this house was built in 1979. We have a newer box outside with the readings on etc but the main fuse only covers what we have and use in the house so adding a EV charger will not work with what we have now. So it may end up being way way more expensive for me

The cost comes fron the enormous R&D effort. I think people are forgetting the main reason why these vehicles exist in the first place. It's not for fun, or to be better than ICE cars, or to save us money, or even as an alternative to ICE cars. It's for the climate.

I'm on my 4th; my 3rd was an ID. 3+ and my 4th is the incredibly brilliant & understated Renault Zoe 135GT with CCS charging, understated because everyone describes it as a city car, but it has a great range & has more internal space than a Hyundai Kona, just try and sit in the back of a #Kona!

When car manufacturers have brought Ev cars down to sensible prices, we have a uk infrastructure for public charging, when they have the technology to improve driving distance & time it takes to charge. What about the cost of the iPod for Charing at home, the charge changing the fuse on the fuse board & the possibility people may have to have a new fuse board. What about coming up with storage for the cables under the front seats instead of taking up boot space.Then many buyers would be tempted to buy one. Is it 2030 that the UK government want to stop fossil fuel new car production. That is fine, but there will still be thousands of fossil fuel cars on the road & what happens to used car values. Many families will never afford the the EV cars being produced now, at least new. At this moment I will stick to my Toyota hybrid giving me 70 mpg.

VW has a nasty habit in pushing products onto the market, which have not been fully tested/developed yet. Just wait a couple of years and then the EV's from VW will hopefully give less trouble... (and have a lower salesprice!).

I’m not sure how this is as affordable as an equivalent petrol/diesel? It’s nearly 10k dearer than a golf... that’s an awful lot of change for fuel

I saw one today on the M6. I think these electric cars are being bought by people with a few pounds to spare, and can also charge them at home easily. I saw an old lady in an electric Mini Cooper S today as well, probably paid cash and will keep it for many years. I think thats the way to do it to justify the price premium over fossil fuel cars, you need to keep it a very long time.

It’s not. Check out a 204bhp auto golf with a similar spec and it’s about the same money. (Family Pro Performance is £32,500 otr) it’s also much bigger than a golf inside and being RWD it reminds me a lot of a BMW 330ci MSport I used to own.

My job involves working on and driving most manufacturers vehicles. I find that Volkswagens products designed post deiselgate show a sharp drop in quality. Not just with cheep switches and hard plastic trim but also low equipment levels and features.

Funny, I'm much more annoyed by #hybridgate hybridgate than I ever was by diesel gate. I always drove diesels before we switched completely to EVs - we are now on our 4th. The auto makers are doing the same fiddles with hybrids that an awful LOT of them did with diesels.

Its interesting to see how EVs are developing, but thats the reason I dont intend buying one for many many years. They are still in the development era. Infrastructure isnt there and neither is a more efficient way of harnessing and storing power. Heavy batteries that dont hold much charge or last very long, its early days, yes they work to some degree but better off waiting for a scientific breakthrough which will make todays EVs look like old relics. Until then, get yourself a good petrol or diesel car and keep it as long as possible, at least 10-15 years. Thats my intention. You save a fortune in the long run. Im biased but you couldn’t go wrong with a Subaru Outback or a Mitsubishi Shogun Sport. Seriously, pay about 25k for one and just keep it. Dont trade them in after three years, its such a waste of money doing that.

In depth review is five thumbs 👎🏿👎🏿👎🏿👎🏿👎🏿 The EGOLF shifter made it the best EV to drive The new ID.3 shifter they copied from the i3 is JUNK bring back the old shifter or bring back the EGolf. VW missed it on copying junk when there shifter was way way better than any Ev on the market

This is just an add for VW. What about the negatives. Look for realistic reviews that are available from real owners that are selling.

Not a car I would be proud to own or drive. More like an appliance. Also, who told them this squishy mini estate design is what customers want? A small SUV style would be more successful.
@rj7855

In Europe, where this car is sold, the VW golf, which has a simular size and same form factor, is the best selling car. So yes, that's what people want, the market told them. The SUV format is covered by the ID4 globally and ID6 in China. Personally I chose buying an ID3 because it was the most practical for me in the South European urban environment where I spend 95% of my driving time.

Why not just be proud of your children? This is just a car,- it’s transport device, not something primarily designed to show the world how pleased you are with your self?
@Giorg189

@@jdavison8551 Exactly, the ID3 is like an appliance, like a washing machine. A car should also deliver pleasure of driving, not just a metal box to get you from A to B. There are people that do not care about cars, I think they might consider this washing machine on wheels.
