It's obviously meant to be a callback, but the lines actually differ slightly from each other in the original japanese. The lines in japanese (as written in the manga) are: Kageyama: "この位置! このタイミング! この角度で!! ドンピシャ!!!" ("Kono ichi! Kono taimingu! Kono kakudo de!! Donpisha!!!"), literally something like: "This position! This timing! With this angle!! Right on!!!" Atsumu: "この位置 頃合い この角度 どんぴしゃり" ("Kono ichi Koroai Kono kakudo Donpishari"), which is something like "This position Good timing This angle Right on" The meaning is basically the same, but they aren't identical. (Just went back to double check, and Kageyama doesn't actually say "It's perfect/right on" the first time they do the freak quick in the anime during the practice game in episode 4, just "This position, this timing, this angle". It is there in the original manga and at the end of the first Seijo game though.)

@@guff_tm The translations are slightly off, Kageyama usually said "This timing," but Atsumu's is "This speed" which I think is perfect because of how the Miya twins freak quick is more akin to the original version of Kageyama and Hinata's where Hinata just swung on blind faith as quickly as he could.

Coach this was officially the start of the 2nd half of the season 4, that's why there's a new opening. This episode aired 6 months apart from episode 13 because production was delayed due to covid and some personnel shifts that happened. This half of the season is when people start to complain about the drastic change in animation quality.

@@ElevateYourselfOfficial Just to give a heads up, the next episode is the infamous one which was outsourced to another studio and so the animation quality will take a nosedive for that episode. However, it does get better from 17 and mostly stays consistent after it.

@@ElevateYourselfOfficial Also you gotta imagine watching episode 13, seeing Atsumus killer serve, Hinata unlocking his new jump potential for the first time and then you get left hanging at the start of the match so you have to wait 6 months for the match to continue. Those were the hardest 6 months ever for me, but it was 100% worth it even with the dropoff in animation quality, since at least in my opinion the writing, character progression and just straight up epicness of the match skyrocketed through the roof. This part of Season 4 is definitely my favorite, there are so many moments I will never forget and cry emphasizing athlete tears everytime I watch them. I hope you can enjoy these episodes as much as I did, despite the quality dropoff, because sometimes it looks real bad even though it's supposed to be a high budget quality animation where someone does something epic, you just gotta accept it and go for the feel of the whole scene. Just to add to the scene when Akaashi (Bokuto's setter) is commenting on Kageyama's 'missed tempo' set, in the episode the anime has him say "He probably knows how his opponents are viewing him." The manga breaks this line down a little better and his explanation is actually more along the lines of "Kageyama has an extremely good understanding of what his side of the court looks like from the opponent's point of view." Essentially, he's explaining that Kageyama's strength doesn't just lie in his ability to quickly see where everybody is and what is happening on the court, but also in his ability to instantly visualize his own plays from a different perspective than his own, and that enables him to make even more deceptive and effective plays as a setter :D

Inarizaki's cheer band was playing tempo starting a a slow cadence and gradually speeding up during the Karasuno pre serve. The purpose of having Saeko and the Karasuno cheer band play at the SAME time was to cut through the gradually increasing tempo Inarizaki kept putting into the Karasuno servers ear. It's a matter of overlapping tempos, songs and rhythms to allow the server to not focus on the drum beats and refocus on just serving effectively.

About the twins: the blonde one is Atsumu and the Silver Hair is Osamu, though in the manga and in the Haikyuu Universe they are actually identical, to the point that people often don't know which is which. The different hair colours are probebly just for the audience to know, but for the characters, I think it's the same Edit: they are slightly different in the manga, but more similar than in the anime. Maybe it's just the blacl and white making the difference more subtle or the anime highlighted the difference more. Anyway, people do mix them up and that's why I could swear their hair colour was identical.

The Miya twins having different hair colours isn’t them not being identical. @@sal_5594 in the manga, their hair colour is is identical when they’re kids, both being drawn as solid black. Their eyes are harder to judge, since their eye colours change from panel to panel, but there doesn’t seem to be a clear difference between them, and in all official manga colourings their eyes seem to both be the same shade of grey, though that’s kinda true of all of Inarizaki. But yeah my guess is that the difference in eye colour and the difference in hair colour when they’re kids is something added by the anime. Edit: it’s worth mentioning, though, that using official manga colourings when talking about the Miyas isn’t great anyway, since even Osamu’s hair colour isn’t consistent across them. for reference with saeko: she mentions how in the match against ushiwaka (season 3) she was cheering, but it got lost in the sauce with the other team's cheering team being so much louder. since she got really frustrated, she got her taiko team with her here. basically when the serving happens, they aren't trying to overpower the other band, just make it loud enough that the server can concentrate on the drums as opposed to the band (they are close to the server here). also, taiko is basically 95% drums of different types, 5% flute for harmony (generalization but it gets the point across) so they can be LOUD if they want to be: it's played outside usually, like the bagpipes in that sense.

14:53 "We don't need the memories" is a response to a common trope in Japanese sports culture. People say that they're going to participate in a tournament and make great memories there that will last them a lifetime. Instead, Inarizaki basically is saying, "we didn't come here for the good times. [implied: what we came here for is the trophy. We came here to win.]" It's particularly effective in Japanese because it's written in the local dialect where Inarizaki is from, which sounds tougher and more emotive, kind of like saying, "we don't need no memories."

Oh, and not a spoiler, but Tsukki was laughing at Inarizaki trying to distract his serve because he, like Hinata, has a very boring standing float serve which Tsukki himself sees as not worth disrupting, in addition to his focus making it hard to distract.

The "We don't need the memories" is a reference to how the less competitive clubs are just there to "make friends and memories" rather than compete. This is illustrated in Hibike! Coach, here are two things you might've missed: 1. Saeko (Tanaka's sister) was saying that she got pissed when her (solo) cheering got overwhelmed by Shiratorizawa's cheering squad. In this episode 26:19, she's channeling that frustration to counter Inarizaki's cheering squad. 2. "This position...This timing...This angle!" It is the exact line Kageyama said when he and Hinata first did the freak quick.

The idea of 'making memories' is a classic answer or motivation as to why people do clubs in Japan. Useful for hiding ambitions people may secretly be harboring when asked what your goal at a club might be, should you be embarrassed to declare them. The fact that Inarizaki are openly declaring 'We Don't Need the Memories' connects to this, implying they are dispensing with all pretense with regard to their goals. It's essentially a declaration of war, victory above all else. It's something that, as a statement, only has true significance in a Japanese high school context.

Coach, Inarizaki's slogan is "We don't need the memories" because they're a team that only focuses on the present and don't get overconfident based on past results. Even though they are the 2nd seed in this tournament and came in 2nd place at the last major tournament, They are playing this and every game as if they are the underdogs. As someone already commented, why the Inarizaki banner is "We don't need the memories" will be fully explained later. However, it's also important to know that in Japan it's usual to say "at least you made some memories" when someone loses or doesn't accomplish something they were trying. In fact, when Hinata and Kageyama first meet at the Middle School tournament Kageyama tells him "did you come here to make some memories?", clearly implying that he was going to lose.

Band Geek here!! At 21:32 those instruments are called Mellophones. They are brass instruments that are similar to French horns. Former band student thoughts: It's easier for a loud, strong rhythm to disrupt an unsteady one than the other way around. Saeko's team are drummers, meaning they focus more on exacting rhythm rather than feel of the music. They're also a team that's been together for a while, so they're well practiced. They wouldn't be easily thrown off by a competing sound. However, the slow clap build up is mostly controlled by one high school drummer leading the cheer squad. So it'd be easy to knock them off into random applause which is normal to ignore. As for the drumming itself being distracting, I believe they're aiming for "it's less of a problem than what the other team is pulling" instead of full concentration. That said, taiko is pretty ubiquitous in Japan, so it might be easier to tune out due to familiarity and habit. (Just like certain overplayed songs at sports matches in America.) Of course, that effectiveness can vary person to person. Also, it's very clear the that Inarizaki's conductor was animated before the music was selected because the conducting is SO OFF that it cracks me up every time I see it. lol "That song sounds familiar!" There are two songs that Inarizaki's band plays. The one at the beginning of the episode is song 2 (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fdmno6x2qbPSYJc.html) and it sounds familiar to me, too. I'm almost certain it's referencing another Haikyuu song, but I can't figure it out, and it's driving me crazy. Google is no help since song 1 (playing the rest of the episode) apparently sounds like a Naruto opening and that's all I can find in discussion forums. If anyone here knows what song 2 is, please tell me. T.T

Something to note on the animation production, ordinarily planning for a season of anime happens well in advance (ideally a year+). Pumping out an anime episode a week is just not feasible, it takes weeks to months per episode. Often times the best looking shows don't have the highest budget, just the most ideal and lenient production schedules.

This is a misinterpretation with negative connotations. I think Furudate-sensei intentionally used a motto like this that can easily be misinterpreted. **to avoid spoiling for coach as they do explain the meaning in later eps** It actually means to not dwel on the past, i.e. memories and past accomplishments/wins and failures, and rather to move forward by focusing on the present and future, taking on new challenges and bettering yourself. Winning or losing is irrelevant - it's about your attitude to the challenges ahead.

Contrary to popular opinion, Japanese sports fans can be just as rowdy as international fans. It's also a stereotype for the region that Inarizaki is from (Kansai). it's not volleyball, but as a real life example, there's an urban legend in Osaka (one of the prefectures in the Kansai region) called Curse of the Colonel. The story goes that in 1985, rowdy baseball fans of the Hanshin Tigers celebrated their team's win over the reigning champions by jumping into the river. They then chucked a nearby statue of Col Sanders (as a substitute effigy for star player, Randy Bass) in to 'join in the celebration'. The legend goes that the act angered the spirit of Col Sanders, causing the Tigers to thereafter suffer an 18 year losing streak.
