There is one spot for Nationals, and Oikawa knows that Kageyama is more talented, and recognizes that Karasuno is an absolute threat. How many times has a professional athlete given true and real advice when they're absolutely going to be a potential opponent in the middle of the season? Would Kobe give advice to the Celtics before a finals match up? Oikawa deserves a bit of respect for it is all I'm saying

I actually love how Adam's predictions reflect the quality of Haikyuu's writing. Instead of progress being linear and the protagonist always winning because of plot armour, Haikyuu showcases exactly those "growing pains" and all the awkward stages making individual skills come together in a team sport.

Ukai was put on earth to do 3 things: coach volleyball, get jacked, and huck his grandson great distances. I love this episode, and the coaching perspectives from Adam really changed how I thought about an episode I've seen many many times, I think that's pretty cool!

Its not the reliance a hitter has on the setter that's bothering Hinata, its the fact that he's only useful if Kageyama is his setter. He wants autonomy in the sense that he needs to learn how to score on a set from anyone

Once again back at the channel where we boost Adam's ego! Like I said before, his POV from a coach is amazing in these type of episodes. I agree with most of the comments, at this point, the setter (Kageyama) was calling all the shots, so saying that the spiker has the final decision is basically trying to balance the equation: Hinata needs to be able to decide where the spike is going, not following Kageyama blindy. Sarah, keep your amazing eyebrows flowing, we love how you know something is coming and Adam is so unaware. PS. I wasn't able to tell you before but why don't put up to a vote the upcoming movie reaction.

I found Adam’s take on the approach the story took to Hinata in this part to feel very spot-on and well put into words - immediately made me flash forward to some of the future scenes where some of the things he talked about will get low-key referenced. Additionally, a few other people, including Oikawa, described Kageyama from before as someone who tries to do everything on his own, so that also tracks. (And imo that actually goes very well with what Sarah spoke about earlier regarding the synergy and the specific relationship between a setter and a middle. Hard to describe but both your words make perfect sense and it feels great x) Seijou having Mondays off and Oikawa’s line about resting and slacking being two different things are based off something Furudate heard during a very early research trip to a powerhouse school, even before Haikyuu started. They had this image of a strong team being all about training, and those words about the importance of proper rest left a strong impression on them. This reaction is probably one of my favorites so far! So cool to see you really understand, relate to and enjoy the content, it’s just good feels all around~

i think my favourite episodes of haikyuu are these types where you can tell the author was really really excited to teach the audience something new about volleyball lol, i also really love the slice of life bits i think they do a good job of letting you get attached to characters, a lot of other sports anime will hyper focus on the sports and the competitive side of things which is cool and exciting in its own right but it makes me appreciate the slower pace of haikyuu yknow

I love Hinata's little sparkly eyes at 17:38. He's just been beaten by a spike from a tiny child, and his first reaction is to think it's exciting and cool. A few episodes ago (I can't remember if it was right at the beginning of this season or the end of the last) Adam said something about really wanting to see some training this season, and I think we've all been excited for him to get to this arc. I'm so proud of everyone--the team themselves for the work they're putting in, Ukai Jr for getting the advice he needs and then passing it on to the whole team, Yachi and Takeda helping Kageyama practice, Hinata and Kageyama for genuinely listening to each other's points of view and actively looking for help once they'd calmed down, Oikawa's nephew and Ukai Sr for being comedy gold.

From someone who has watched other sports-animes, I just keep hearing actual volleyball players/coaches talk about the reality of this show, which I just love. The in depth arguments or explanations of certain situations and scenarios are very appreciated! And I find it very interesting to see how some people might argue based on purely Haikyuu-perspectives versus people like you who have real life Volleyball experience through most of your lives!

Hey Sarah I think we agree that the attack is a collaborative effort, the disagreement is that up till now the attack was solely kageyama based and no one even allowed the thought of hinata contributing

Oikawa sets the ball in a way that it is the best for the hitter to score(he takes into account their mindset, their comfort zones, their habits etc) Kageyama sets where "he" thinks it would be the best to set, and attacker will have to adjust and follow. Oikawa is the kind of setter that works with every hitter. Kageyama is the kind that absolutely needs an athletic beast like Hinata who can react to his sets, Kageyama would struggle much more with anyone else who isn't as jumpy and quick on feet like Hinata.

@24:15 Boys have a weird way of apologizing to each other too..... I remember 2 teammates fist fighting about something a day before the game. They slaughtered their opponent, and one of the guys said, "you didn't suck today" as a subtle apology, and their relationship didn't change lol.

Oh my god, oh my god! I've been waiting for this episode!!! I really want to hear Adam's perspective cuz in this "Tempo" we get two coaches, the grandpa and his grandson. It was like listening to experts exchanging opinions with each other😍😍😍

Just saw the new Haikyuu movie in Tokyo - the animation and sound design was easily the best in the series! My Japanese isn’t great but the character moments still made me tear up a bit (I’m like Adam where that’s a hard thing to do haha). It’s really fun to come back to earlier in the series like this and see the growth characters have gone through! Super excited for you guys to get to that part of the story and share your thoughts!

So I watched Sarah react to every single episode on her own, but I am loving watching and listening to Adam break things down from a coach’s viewpoint. As a coach myself (wrestling not volleyball), it is incredible to watch him consider not only the skill and techniques Ukai is teaching, but the consideration for the young athletes.

What I think about what they meant by "the attacker is the one who takes the initiative" is mainly focused on quick attacks, think with me, when you are a winger and you are going to make an attack, the setter lifts the ball high so that you can start running, visualize the defenders and plan your attack, in a quick attack, this is completely different, when the ball is reaching the setter's hands, the attacker is already running, ready to jump and knowing what he is going to do and where aim, and only then does the setter touch it, so in a quick attack, no matter how much the setter has to adjust the route, visualize the marking among other things, the initiative, the one who will always take it is the one attacking. At least in a quick attack. 13:00

the players dedication to improving is really inspiring, and the reactions from the perspectives of sarah and adam is awesome to see. Sarah as usual keeping to her signature high attention to detail, really trying to get to the bigger picture, with insightful commentary through her experience as a player. Which is exactly what drew me in throughout her first watch through. And you can see it on adams face that he is looking at the players from a coach perspective and how his face lit up with pride seeing the mentality they have. I think a lot of players would feel like they want to impress their coach with their skill. But Adams reaction reinforces the concept that its not specifically the skills that a coach is necessarily invested in teaching, its that mindset. I mean obviously Adam has been impressed by their skills at various points but I dont think I've seen him this happy despite the fact that the players are engaging in things they arent yet succeeding in. It really shows that mindset of how your time is an investment, you cant always just rely on the results of your previous training and stick to what you're good at, the drive to be better at things you're not good at, is almost more valuable than actually being good at something. Very wholesome reaction from adam, and you can tell sarah is really encouraging that in him because she didnt spend the episode disagreeing with him or trying to coax him into making predictions just so she can poke fun at him for being wrong xD Though I admit I do love that dynamic haha This was probably my favourite installment of the Adam and Sarah reaction series so far, you guys make an excellent couple. Love you both.

Re: Nickname. Ukai (and many characters in the series) calls Hinata "Chibi". Chibi is "small" not short or midget or anything like so. It's just "tiny" so anything small and cute is "chibi". Ukai then adds suffixes(?) to them like "Chibi-taro" and "Chibi-suke" to make "chibi" more noun-like and not just an adjective. Taro is a suffix usually given to cute male pets like a hamster, puppy or a cat. While suke is very human sounding, although you can name any male animal taro. More than it being offensive by virtue of it's meaning, I always took it depending on context. Ukai is obviously older and I think he says this in the same way of "brat" while kuroo's "Chibi-chan" is unwarranted because he's like, 2 years older than Hinata AND he's a stranger. Meanwhile Oikawa's "Chibi-chan" sounds neutral and indifferent to me. Either way it would frustrate Hinata who's very boyish and is conscious about his height!

My understanding of the spiker being in charge: The setter can set who he/she wants and in what manner but the spiker chooses the speed of the approach/jump (the tempo the episode talks about) as well as how they hit the ball (dink, tool, line shot,etc)

I saw a lot of Oikawa comments. He was my favorite setter and also because his team was so live cause of him. The cahracter was not without flaws, his sincerity was questionable atbtimes but I guess he was very true when talking about volleyball and the techniques he knew and applied. He was very much self-aware and insecure. He was the most relatable character for me. Tho one more character I strive to be but in the future season, Oikawa was a dork, leader, and a supporter all the way for me. He had no obligation to Kageyama at this point but still as a captain had to correct someone who was mislead by his own idea.

Adam might be a genius! Explained the dynamics of hitting the ball and setter's control perfectly.

Edit but I'm putting this at the top: BEST TSUKKI'S COMING!!!! For Sarah's comments on how Hinata wants to "break free" of how tightly interlinked he is with his setter for the quick - I don't think he minds that part. He's always grateful for Kageyama and his tosses because he spent years alone without someone to set to him. Instead, wanting to "fight on his own" is that right now he feels like he himself is not contributing enough and he wants to fight alongside Kageyama as an equal ally rather than as a tool without agency.

Season 2 has always been my favorite of all the seasons of Haikyuu 🧡🧡🧡

This episode is great and I feel like it was the perfect episode for Adam and for us to get his perspective as a coach on what is being said and how they're all trying to implement it. I loved hearing his thoughts on what grandpa Ukai and Oikawa said at the beginning! Up until this point Kageyama really has had most of the control in their hitter-setter relationship and personally I really love that both Ukai and Kageyama tried to get another opinion on it and both grandpa Ukai and Oikawa delivered haha. I think it's a really cool contrast with the opinions we heard previously (mainly setters in the form of Kageyama, Suga and Ukai). Hearing what Oikawa (who's a very experienced setter, who can adapt to all his hitters and make them shine) and grandpa Ukai (who is very experienced in both teaching volleyball and handling players like Hinata cause he coached the Little Giant previously) had to say was truly amazing and I love how it kind of validated and encouraged Hinata while also giving Ukai and Kageyama the boost they needed to really give this a shot! Such a good episode, especially with everyone practicing something new at the end (well except Tsukkishima)!!

I know Adam is kind and won't throw a student under the bus, When Adam is 70 years old, he will be like Grampa Ukai, right? Or maybe he will be like Coach Nekomata? I always support you from Japan.

I love this episode and your reactions. I wish someone explained tempo like this to me when I was playing as a setter in my school years lol. Regarding them saying the hitter determining the play, I took it that it means the middle hitter determine what and where the setter is going to set to him by how early he starts the approach. Especially for Hinata in the Freak Quick because Hinata will be already in the air for that Freak Quick before even Kageama touches the ball. The genius of Kageama, to me, was his ability to toss that quick to Hinata even if the receive is slightly off. For a normal setter, if the first ball is off, usually we will not be tossing a quick. In that sense, Hinata, by being already be in the air and waiting for the ball, determines where Kageama will toss the ball if he is tossing to him. Of course Kageama can toss to the open hitter or the opposite but then that will not have anything to do with Hinata anymore.

I love the addition of Adam to this channel a lot :D

matches and tournament arcs are great and hype, but the training arcs are just the best, both personal and skill growth, wholesome friendship moments, tough love, humility and respect even when teammates are not on 'talking terms', everyone trying to find SOMETHING to get better, like a sponge absorbing everything from the matches with the other teams during the camp and tournaments. Not only from the players but from the coach as well. Up until this episode we all thought Ukai was a great coach, but when we finally meet THE grandpa Ukai and listen to his wise teachings and experience, we see the young ukai still has a lot to learn as well, and he does learn, since he noticed that the change couldnt be "one sided" and ran off to talk to Kageyama, Grandpa Ukai knew that fro mthe start but didn't gave his grandson all the awnsers to let him THINK, and worked perfectly.

The way I interpreted Ukai/Oikawa's statements was that: Ultimately, you need a hitter to do *anything* as a setter. You set a ball to where a player is going to be/where they are. Without the hitter you are nothing, you have to work with where your hitters have gone/jumped, in that sense, they *lead* the play. That does not mean the setter is unimportant by any means, but the setter isn't normally supposed to decide where the hitter is. The setter works with the hitters, and decides which hitter gets the ball, they are perhaps the one who *decides* the play, but you can't *lead* it if that makes sense. The hitter "decides" the tempo because it's based on when they approach.

I haven't even finished watching but I was happily screaming at my TV when Adam talked about how once the setter has set they don't have any more control. That's exactly how I've always seen it and why I always understood why Hinata pushed so hard to improve when spiking. Once the ball leaves the setters fingers they can no longer fight. The spiker has to be able to fight by making the decision in the air based on the conditions in front of them. Hinata couldn't do that and because he was aware of the fact that the quick was becoming less effective against good teams during the practice matches he knew that it would be even less effective against stronger teams. I understand the urgency of the tournament being close so I don't think Kageyama was completely wrong in his concerns but I feel like if Hinata wasn't given a chance to improve now then it would be the off season before he was given the chance to and that would hurt their chances in the very tournament they are worried about.

A little thing I really appreciated was Adam's explanation of imagining the ball is going up a ramp and dropping bc I always looked at this similar to the freak quick in that maybe it was just an anime thing to make volleyball sound cooler but isn't actually feasible (clearly I don't play volleyball LOL) Massive props to setters pulling it off!!

I would like to point out that The setter leads the attack in the sense of they decide where/who the ball goes to but the spiked determines the temp, determines where the ball will go with the attack. The setter determines who gets it but the person who actually determines what will happen in the attack is the spiker. Now don’t get me wrong they work with each other but I guess I would put it this way a general is the leader and may dictate what squads go out and the general plan but the person that actually leads the attack and determines the outcome is the people in the fields. The person that actually leads the attack is the squad leader or whoever is highest with the soldiers on the field. All the general can do is try to put stuff in the right spot

And what he’s saying is exactly what Hinata is saying by “fighting by myself” Hinata wants the option to take the perfect set ups Kageyama gives him (Hinata feels this is every set) and have different options because rn they have one and one only and they shut down all their freedom

I always thought of it as; if the setter just sets however they want and the hitter isn't there then it's the setters fault. So the hitter is the one in control because the setter needs to time it to get the ball to them.

Woah, sarah and adam talking about volleyball reminds me of myself and my wife talking about politics. We see things differently and then talk about it and start to see it a little differently and then agree on small parts or go to the others side haha.

Adam is such a positive bean ❤ i love all the new insight and discussion from this episode. I have this new appreciation for the fact that Grandpa Ukai is teaching Hinata with other younger players, to demonstrate the importance of these foundational lessons no matter the age. In parallel, Kageyama is drawn to a children's volleyball session, as if he wants to relearn the basics for himself, and Oikawa as a parallel for Grandpa Ukai spent his time with his nephew, a young volleyball player. Just a lot of cross generational love, a background to this episode i never thought to appreciate before, demonstrating how sports can cross certain boundaries ❤

At 15:42 "Tobio's more run down", I'd translate as "More inept/Blockheaded than I thought he was" and at 18:40 "The setter tosses to the spiker" could be better translated as "The spiker begins their approach before the setter releases the toss and the setter adjusts the toss height and timing to match the spiker's jump." At 18:59 "What kind of attack this weirdo quick is" I'd put as "I don't know what kind of killer-move this weirdo quick is". It's tiny nuances that are being missed in translation that has been annoying me on these reactions, cuz it might mean the difference between you getting the dialogue right or not. Otherwise it'll be like when Sarah during her first watch calling out Hinata for saying "I" all the time, when Japanese doesn't usually use (1st person) pronouns much. It shapes your perceptions of the characters and their thought processes ever so slightly. Like I didn't at all pick up on Hinata wanting to be "autonomous" minus the setter, for me it was how to have autonomy in hitting with his eyes open and wanting more of a share in control/ wanting a partnership with Kageyama and not just remaining Kageyama's tool. I'm scratching my head for where Sarah got that from. Thanks for the great reaction as usual and for the shout out to validating everyone's differing opinions and perspectives, at the start of the video.

From my admittedly totally ignorant perspective, the very short time of a quick attacks means that the hitter has to be in charge, because he has to be there already and can't really follow the lead of the setter or he won't have time to jump, and with this particular quick in which Hinata is already jumping before Kayama touches the ball no one actually has control of where it goes, because Hinata is just swinging and having the ball bounce off his hand so he can't control where it goes, and Kagyama is only throwing to someone already jumping so there is only one angle that can work so he can't control where it goes either. This seems to be a significant part of why once the other side catch up with Hinata they can stop it since they only have to get one hand in the only path the ball can go. This also may be what was causing problems for Kagyama in his previous school where he was going faster and faster setting where he wanted the ball to go with no regard for anyone managing to get there, which may be why it can now work with Hinata who is running and jumping already to be aimed at by super fast Kagyama rather than trying to get to a fast moving ball that they would need to be jumping towards before they even know where it is going.
