Got this printer a few weeks ago and have been trying to make a video about it, but it suddenly stopped homing just as I got some time free to do some filming. Has anyone seen this issue before? I have an Eddy probe handy that I was excited to test, but it sounds like Eddy compatibility is low on Sovol's priority list. Sovol, if you can hear the sound of my 'voice', please bump it up.
Disappointed in myself for starting my KZfaq presence with a millennial pause, but here we are
The fastest way to buy the SV08 right now if you're interested is most likely Amazon, on which it's often available with Prime shipping. You can find it at the following link, although at a premium: amzn.to/3WbBWwo (Amazon Aff.)

Sensors that rely on an electro magnetic field are influenced by temperature. (resulting in variation in the height measurements when temperature fluctuates) I doubt if it's any better than a proximity, other than being able to scan faster. (it has a data output for height mapping so it's able to show a value other than on or off. A simple klicky probe might give a more predictable/stable result. (but not as fancy, i admit) but from a technical point of view, i take reliability over fancy. on my previous homebrew delta-printer with a mechanical switch as probe I had stable results.
@MaximalistWorkshop
@MaximalistWorkshop Ай бұрын
@@berendlucasvanderweide you're right there's some influence from heat, but I've never heard of the magnetic field being so influenced that it stops a printer from being able to home at all. Heat soaking the probe before running bed mesh is all you usually need to do to account for any deviations in my experience. Now that I've taken the printhead apart, I don't think it's the sensor. Follow-up to come!
@berendlucasvanderweide
@berendlucasvanderweide Ай бұрын
@@MaximalistWorkshop No, i don't mean that the heat is causing your issues. I mean that the magnetic sensor fluctuates and might not be accurate enough for proper bed height determination. Perhaps adding a PTC or other heater element to the proximity sensor (or mount it on piece of aluminium and hold it against the bed, but you kinda need to know the correct offset to do that) to use it heated every time. Heat soaking it with a bed based on some radiation in a non enclosed printer is not the way to go.

@@berendlucasvanderweide Got it - that all makes sense. Thanks for the info! I'll have to do some more research. Sounds like someone may have adapted the SV08 to use a Klicky probe.

Millennial pause beats 'Wait. Is it recording.. Am i recording?' With a QUERY_PROBE you can get a status of the probe. It should report "triggered" or "open" and if you hold something of metal in front of the probe and perform another QUERY_PROBE, the status should change. Seems like your proximity sensor died or you have an interruption in either the power or the signal wires or the extra MCU on the printerhead isn't communicating properly with the mainboard. You didn't loose your magnet mounted cover tearing some wires by accident?
@MaximalistWorkshop
@MaximalistWorkshop Ай бұрын
Hahaha - thanks, that makes me feel better. Nice to be in good company. I did as you say, and it seems like all of the wires are intact; I queried the probe a bunch, and it looks like it stays open when away from the bed and 'triggering' when close to the bed, but only when it's basically pressed against the plate. Running more diagnostics now. I really appreciate you pointing me in the right direction!

@@MaximalistWorkshop just went through the comments, noticed you used the original plate as well to test. Perhaps your nozzle is very low? According to the step file i have from the printer it should be 1mm below the air ducts. I would contact sovol over this matter with a link to this movie in the email. They respond quick. Perhaps the nozzle came apart or perhaps the inductive sensor is off. (You could probably loosen the screw and lower the sensor a few tenths of a mm.

I think i watched a guy that has a series on the SV08 and one of the first things he had to do was to configure the sensitivity of which it stops. I think there are no end-stops on the printer and it is depending just on the information from the motor drivers itself. Thus with sensorless homing you have the ability to lower or higher the sensitivity of "end-stopping action". You can change this in the klipper config. Imo this could be the case because it is hitting the ends but does not trigger any actions but just continues as normal.
@MaximalistWorkshop
@MaximalistWorkshop Ай бұрын
Thanks, Kali! Sensorless homing is fairly common in 3d printers these days, and it is reliable enough that it wouldn't cause this issue. Also, on the z-axis, the end-stop is virtual and is triggered by the leveling probe or the tension gauge, depending. The problem is a defect in the design of the nozzle. Please see my follow-up video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y5-kbMl81pjDmGQ.htmlsi=tG2elnFqOhueCtXv Stay tuned for another update and more developments.

Just tie the umbilical to the ptfe feed tube and it will keep it off the print surface. Maybe your Z offset is bellow the bed and the probe has to bounce up ?
@MaximalistWorkshop
@MaximalistWorkshop Ай бұрын
Z-offset shouldn't impact whether the probe is triggered at all, should it? If it was a z-offset issue, the printhead would home normally and /then/ dig into the bed as it starts trying to compensate on the z-axis while printing. Even leveling should be normal in that case because ABL doesn't rely on z-offset during bed mesh calibration.

@greensheen8759 Ай бұрын
Seconded on the cable. It will fail much sooner just hanging loose or possibly get jammed up in the mechanism. Zip tie it in several places along the ptfe tube to constrain its movement

Ugh - that's the worst. I'm really sorry to hear it, especially since the nozzles are so rare. I'm thinking about doing another follow-up video to make an even stronger statement about it, because I haven't seen anything from Sovol, and they really need to do something about this ASAP in my view. A warning would be helpful, at minimum, until they can find another fix.

Check if probe is working, as far as I know it is inductive probe and those have led on them to let you know if it's triggered. Just poke it with some metal and see if it activates. Otherwise try adjusting it's hight so it's closer to bed

@MaximalistWorkshop I was thinking about uneven thermal expansion with the bed warping as various parts heat up and expand differently.. Preheating the bed and giving the heat time to soak would verify if I'm on the money (spring steel, PCB, aluminium, ABS... oh my!). I have an SV08 on order, and I REALLY don't want to crash it.

@garethevans9789 I understood what ypu meant and that plays a part in zoffset but this is the probe not registering the bed at all. He probably needs a replacement probe. @maximalistWorkshop I would look into the M12 probe mod if I were you.

Man, I've been itching to get an eddy probe for mine, but want to wait till someone braver than me does it. Wouldn't the easiest way to check if the probe is doing anything be to remove the shroud and see if the red led comes on when it gets close to the bed?
@MaximalistWorkshop
@MaximalistWorkshop Ай бұрын
Yep! Need Sovol to work on getting their firmware up-to-date. And yeah - it's a good point. The probe's light turns off when metal is placed close enough to the probe, but it doesn't seem to want to trigger until the plate is too close and there isn't enough clearance for the nozzle. So, the probe is working, but its sensitivity is dialed way down for some reason.

Not that you should have to. But wont just like a fresh custom klipper install fix most of the issues people have. Maybe I just have experience with bad printers where the community has to create better firmware for the machine to run properly. But thats my plan get the sv08 wait for community to do better than the company then be happy. And yes I said wait, i can follow instructions but have no clue about the firmware crap.lol

You mean the Eddy probe? It’s not compatible with this printer’s current firmware. If you mean the induction probe, I haven’t had any issues which were caused by the use of a magnetic plate. Magnetic plate is standard for this machine, as is the induction probe.
