Vostroyans, or "How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love 3rd Party Minis" [How I Paint Things]

Wargames Atlantic are churning out plastic kits at a rate of knots. One of their earliest, funnily enough, is the Les Grognards box for Death Fields. With a score of head and helmet options - both with exposed faces and gas mask variants - you're not short on choice, and there's always plenty of bits left over which scale perfectly with the current GW range of plastic Imperial Guard infantry. Brilliant for converting or just using as-is for alternative armies on the table.
You can either buy direct from WGA at their online store or check local retailers and online stockists to see what's available near you. They're some of my favourite unit-fillers, where 'cheap and cheerful' doesn't mean they're rubbish. And no, they didn't give me anything free to flog their wares - as Marge Simpson would say, "I just think they're neat."

I love the WGA miniatures. You can use them for WHATEVER game you want. I've picked up quite a few boxes and plan to use them for games like Fistful of Lead and several (hopefully) of the Osprey Game Books! Neat how you soften the primer first! Well Done!!! - Tom

I've been singing Wargames Atlantic's praises for a while now. The biggest problem they have is putting out so many great kits, it would bankrupt me to buy everything I want. And they're constantly developing new ones. They're also just really open and communicative with their customers, which is refreshing compared to Games Workshop. A company as opaque and impenetrable as a granite octopus.

I gotta be honest ~20% of the enjoyment of watching these videos comes solely from the before and after of the wash stage. Everytime it goes from a questionable blob of color to something that looks done. Truly magical!

Wargames Atlantic boxes provided me with an incredible amount of options for kitbashing pruposes (Sludge) and various conversions - just those afghan infantry turban heads repaid the box many many times over.

My first thoughts after seeing the mini was "how are these not the standard stormtroopers for Sludge armies?". I've seen this kit lots before, but it matches REALLY well with all the art from Sludge rules, which I recently fell madly in love with. Between Grognards and their heavy kit, that's most of an army.

@@Skadooch Pick Afghans, Les Grognards, the very recent Bulldogs, WW1 German Infantry and/or French Infantry, WW2 Italian Infantry (those Bersaglieri helmets are awesomesauce), Renaissance Conquistadores... any kit is a treasure trove. Combine two or three and you're in kitbash heaven.

These are some curious boxes, such as someone less scrupolous furnished modern weapons to an early 19th century world. WA's minis are really interesting, expecially their Death Fields serie, now are arriving some new minis, Female Cannon Fodder and a sort of Future Marines. As the solit a nice tutorial, also if I can't imagine going on a battle field with that enormous bearskin hat!😊

I had this exact idea yesterday, you can even make heavy weapons teams and rough riders with some of Wargame’s Atlantic other kits

I am so grateful that you can get these awesome, cheap alternatives. I'd love for GW to bring back all the old regiments but you know they won't and even if they did, they would cost a bomb. I have got some of these though i'm a way of painting them. I may even, most likely end up buying some of their new praetorian ones first. They look awesome and I really want to get a Praetorian Army.

Not only do Wargames Atlantic put out their Les Grognards infantry kit and the Heavy Weapons + Support/Command kit, they've got a *Raptor Cavalry* kit for them in the pipeline as well. Word is, GW are bringing back Rough Riders, so this will give your Not Vostroyans that option. In Raptor form!

Great tutorial as always. The Les Grognards are a great kit. My son uses them for Vostroyans and I built them with the metal helmets and gas masks for a personalized guard army. They have a great heavy support and command box et as well. Wargames Atlantic has a lot of great sets with loads of options that just work fantastically as guard units or just sci-fi style troops for pretty much any game.

I'm really interested to see how the company develops over time. They seem to have come out of nowhere like a lightning bolt, dropping a couple dozen really excellent kits with ever more over the horizon. It's fascinating to see where they're straddling the line of "Well, this *needs* to be compatible with 40k so it will sell," and "Let's do something bonkers because there's a gap in the market and it's damn cool."

@@SonicSledgehammerStudio I also like how they do surveys to see what kind of sets people would like to see and the one people voted for the most is the one they produce. It's a novel way to give your customer base some influence in the hobby. As well as to get a good sense of what people really want to see (instead of constantly spitting out space marines).

This was a neat tutorial and the figure looks great! The Vostroyans are an interesting army as they look like 18th century soldiers in the 41st millenium. Thanks for sharing this.

I built and painted around 80 of these guys for a Vostroyan army a year or two ago. Used khorne red at first, then decided I liked deathworld forest green more, then finally repainted them in khorne red. It looks good, maybe a bit darker but I think it lends some grimdark to the look! I really like what you did with the pants and the gun though. Looks great! It’s a shame gw doesn’t make these in plastic, they’re such unique designs.

I used these guys to make my own Imperial Guard unit, the Hetzer Vatborn Infantry.

Personally, vat-born troops seems more like the Cannon Fodder box. Indeed, I had the idea for a Cannon Fodder based Guard army based on the old roleplaying game Paranoia. Where the different unit types are color-coded based on security clearance (Conscripts are Red, Infantry Squads Orange, etc, all the way up to the Company Commander in Blue). Clones churned out in a facility controlled by an insane AI from the Age of Strife. Providing an endless supply of sufficiently loyal and minimally heterodox troops to Imperial commanders on the galactic fringe, in return for kindly pretending none of that deeply heretical stuff is happening. It only somewhat keeps groups like AdMech or the Inquisition from trying to purge them. The Paranoian Troubleshooters, is what I'd call them.

@@Bluecho4 well, they’re grown in artificial uteruses from the genetic materials of their planet’s former nobility after they tried to leave the Imperium. So they’re not clones, but they do have accelerated growth. Their planet Hetze is an agri-world resembling normandy France with a population of around 1 billion and can only grow a couple companies at a time so to make up for smaller numbers they’re much better trained and equipped than the average guard regiment. More like the Mordian Iron Guard. Finally I already have a penal legion made from the cannon fodder box called the Charybdissan Planet Crackers.

Did you just water down the bugmans glow? Or did you lighten with white? ( I WANT MINE to look that good lol!) my bugmans always come out a little too dark and a little too red.

It's just a little touch of water. A couple of coats is ordinarily necessary to get it a solid, slightly brighter finish over a dark primer, if that helps.

Have you ever tried an "Oil Wash" or video on using "oil paint" ?

A few times, but it's a trick to getting it prepared for a video due to the long drying times involved. I've done a couple using the enamel dip which is a vaguely similar process, at least.

I recently noticed some of the content providers (think that's what they call themselves) that I follow have gone from video's in their spare rooms to full blown studios. This has led to "higher production values" or as I like to say a less homely feel, and fewer videos as a consequence. Generally followed by me unsubscribing. So what I say to you, if keep doing what you do as it's frickin awesome 😀😀

Personally, I'd still really like a little more space and a slightly simpler lighting and camera rig setup, but I still hold that the 'garage band' aesthetic works best for me. If ever I figure out how to improve the look of these things it'll only be to make sure the lighting shows true colours. 😂
