Politicians are trolling the media to advance their own agendas.
Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO
Between Rep. Devin Nunes’ (R-CA) secret memo, allegations of missing text messages, and the panic over a so-called “secret society” in the FBI, the past few weeks of political news coverage have been dominated by Republican pseudoscandals. And while each of these alleged “bombshells” has turned out to be a dud, these stories raise questions about whether GOP politicians are intentionally baiting journalists -- trolling them into covering conspiracy theories in order to raise doubts about the FBI and the ongoing Mueller investigation.
Read why the Nunes memo was a dud on vox.com: bit.ly/2D0tu8t
And how the media fell for it anyway: bit.ly/2CZMaoQ

So it sounds like the fix to this would be to have a news cycle that focuses on actual stories instead of huddling around drama like a bunch of highschoolers.

Media should preface EVERY story about an upcoming “bombshell” by a standard disclaimer: “X announced today that a story about Y is to be released; it’s possible that the story is just bait to get us to speculate, but until this is actually released, we will give no further details.” Then NO FOLLOW UP REPORTS unless the release is overdue; and then report ONLY that it’s overdue.

But then you can't sell ads as easily! Their business is advertising and getting people to watch so they can sell those ads. Not to actually report news.

This is also called "argument inoculation" in social psychology. You introduce an idea to a group, you give them a simple defense of the idea and then they are more resistant to new/conflicting information about the idea even if the idea is clearly false.

Felix B no, I trying to give another reason as to why individuals who believe wrong information persist in that belief.
@xponen
@xponen 6 жыл бұрын
"argument inoculation" can also be used to prevent people from believing fake news; 1st) you introduce a fake news to a group, then 2nd) you reveal it is actually fake/a sham. The people who have been "inoculated" are able to resist real fake news later.

@Kang Jin, no I get it, what @Grimm GooseGirl is saying is that basically the first thing you saw is what you believe the most. This is an interesting quirk of human mind, you could use it to both help protect people from fake news or to instead manipulate people to believe fake news depending on your goal... after you 'inoculate' a person with your "facts" then this person will respond differently to a similar fact in the future... this mechanism work just like a Vaccine; you have to 'inoculate' a person when he's young or as early as possible.

I love how well it highlights the need for subsequent skepticism. Part of the problem is how much news organisations wind up buying into the bait because they need something to sell, and a potential bombshell chyron gets more attention and keeps more viewers than a potential bait one. An incentive to tell us the truth instead of selling more ads or subscriptions would be amazing.

You could mention that every time he's said he was going to release a memo (but for some reason didn't do it right then), it was a big fat lie. You're right in that the politicians are the number 1 guilty party here, but the media isn't the victims, they have been raking in profits over hyperinflating GOP trolling over other important information because said behavior gets more eyeballs per minute (and therefore revenue) watching their news channel, which is all they care about in a for-profit, corporate newsroom. They benefit greatly from the cartoonishly awful behavior that they can spend days focusing on instead of more complicated, but pressing issues.
