The best thing to do with an HR is combined the two! VHR bottom end with stronger rods and pistons and HR heads with cams, add some boost and you have an animal of an engine!

Just for info, coming from someone with experience with the VQ platform and having swapped an HR into a DE platform I can confidently say that DE to HR is relatively easy, however a DE to a VHR is a lot more of a challenge. There's some great info you shared, and I appreciate your attention to this amazing engine platform.

You really know your stuff man. Great video. Btw, in the real world, there's not been much of an improvement with the extra displacement of the G37. Sadly, the added weight/refinement offset the HP gains. If you wanted a lighter and more agile car, the G35 with the HR is probably better.

The HR and VHR share the same block. The "slightly greater displacement" of the latter is a function of the greater stroke imposed by a different crank/rods and can't be determined by simply looking at the outside of the engine.

I own a 2004 350Z and a 2014 Q60S . Both have 6 speed manual transmissions. I can tell from experience that my old 350Z has a LOT more bottom end torque then my newer Infiniti. But, the Infiniti's 3.7l engine winds up a bit higher and has a bit more power at the top of the RPM curve where as my older 3.5l seems to develop it's top hp at much lower RPM. Basically, I can get a strong pull from the old 350Z at as little as 1800 rpm where as my newer Infiniti's 3.7l engine does not start to pull strong until at least 3000 rpm. As for acceleration, the 2014 Infiniti I have accelerates to 60 at the exact same time as my old 2004 Nissan 350Z. Of course, the Q60S outweighs the old Z by over 500 lbs. Gearing is the same. By this I mean the cars run the exact same road speed at the same RPM. Advertised HP for the two cars is 287 for the Z and 330 for the Q60S. Both engines run very smooth and neither uses oil. The one thing the 3.7L does not do that the 3.5L does is that start up rattle of the timing chain. The old 3.5L engine will give you this fraction of a second timing chain rattle at start up where as the 3.7L in the Infiniti is dead quiet at start up. So, Nissan must have done something to that chain tensioning system in the newer 3.7l engine.

I use regular gas in my 2007 G35. I've had no power or knocking issues. I've learned that if the compression ratio is more than 10.5:1, you should fill up with premium. After all the years I've owned my G35, I have always filled up with regular. 156,000 miles later my car runs like new, uses one third quart oil after 3000 miles, some of which seeps out of the original valve cover gaskets. to be honest a lot of the reason why higher RPM's don't feel/sound right in the 370z is that the default tuning and VVEL system are really poorly done for high performance and sacrifice a lot of what you want at high RPM's for better efficiency/fuel economy at the low end. A decent tune will make a huge difference for driving it hard because of this.

IIRC the primary complaint about the VHR is that the VVEL mechanism dumps a fair bit of heat into the engine oil.

This is true, the VVEL mechanism heat stresses the oil. The recommended Nissan engine oil that starts out as a 5W-30 gets sheared down to a 5W-20 after about 3K miles according to used oil analysis reports.

I've built a few of these, right now I've got an 07 HR with a vhr rotating assembly. In my opinion the rods look the same as far a design but with the vhr being shorter I'm thinking that's why they hold up to more boost. It's not much though, HRs usually break if exceeding 500 lbft at the wheels, vhr will hold about 50 lbft more, both in stock form. Torque is the amount of force exerted and generally is what needs to be limited on stock rods. Nice video👍🏼

Seem like the person to ask this question! I have and 08 HR. And I'm considering a 370 shell with engine and gearbox for a drift project as the 350 is Starting to get trashed. With both engines on hand, what route would you go? Keep in mind of the 350 is still road legal and registered. I was keen to supercharge the vq37 as it can handle the power that I need as I'm not going too high. Or do I just keep it Na, build the 35 and supercharged that? Any tips and advice would be much appreciated.

@@BB-pf2cs hey, my bad, kinda late in responding. Id keep the 350z as an HR for simplicity as far as the wiring harness and ecu but I'd swap out your 3.5 short block for the 3.7. Maybe get the heads cleaned up with a valve job and seals. I'd use Juke head bolts and oem HR gaskets, they've been holding up great for me at 10psi. You're basically using the 3.7 short block and everything else HR. The blocks have the exact same part number so it's truly a straightforward swap gaining a bit of stroke and about a 1/2 point higher in compression ratio

The video literally says they're the same motor on the bottom end. The bore is the exact same. The only difference is the increase in stroke. VVL is nice but it's not a make it or break it technology. To further prove a point, quarter-mile times and street race videos (even though you can't always go off of these) all show that the speed difference is usually focussed around driver mod or tuner experience. Considering you can get a 350Z HR for around $6000-$10,000, and the 370Z is usually $10,000-$20,000 (for one that's NOT brand new from the lot), I would say the choice is easy. Plus the 370Z interior is ugly XD

I think Nissan changed the bolt pattern to charge more. Would it be possible to make a video about the Honda K20C2, sometime? Possibly compare it to older NA Honda K series engines? I know they did away with the typical exhaust design, going with one massive port, rather than using an exhaust header or manifold.

Yea I’ve noticed that when I bought the g37x l, I’ve driven an is250 for awhile until I bought the g, the 250 has great get up and good it really feels like it has more low end torque below 3k than the Vq37, I’ll have to use half throttle and at least 4K rpm to get up to the speed limit witch gets annoying because I just want to drive normally, these VQ definitely don’t have effortless power lol

block is also machined different so that its more stable at higher RPMS and can handle more force and vibrations since it has oil passages around the cylinders instead of them being completely disconnected from the rest of the block (forgot the real terms for them lol) as well as other design features that improve performance. probably also has lighter weight and stronger crankshaft, pistons, and con rods so that it gets better throttle response and higher RPM. and some higher airflow design. IIRC the V angle is pretty different aswell. along with being twin turbocharged of course, which is the main performance gain along with the very slightly increased displacement. Nissan goes up and above with all of their GT-R drivetrain elements, like the dual clutching automanual tranny.
