The Great Mind also runs counter to the way we evolved to make collective decisions as small, intimate groups. Neither is natural but both are useful methods that should be synthesized to minimize both of their faults.

I was called out by my a person I considered my teacher, I've looked up to. ironically for being bad at trying to explain things to others. Maybe don't meet your heroes, someone said that, now I get it. But I liked explaining things, and I did it to understand things better as I learn, maybe I was being selfish for doing it like that, maybe I was causing confusion on others by being so bad at it. I felt so disincentivized that I dropped pursuing my masters, and academy .

I love the endings to these videos. I find them inspirational to change wrong things to make them better. The most taxing question on the mind is if what we do now will benefit or hurt the future. What would historians find? What would future generations learn about us and what we right now did? Every action will be watched by our children 100 years later. That’s hard to think about, it inspires me as a person to improve people’s life’s and to show our children that we were good people. We can’t be self centered all of the time. As a collective society we need to help and take care of people around us and ourselves, but that’s hard, but it can be done. For us, for the future, for the world.

Imagine a world where everyone thinks the same way, always agrees, and sees things from the same angle. Sounds peaceful, right? Not quite. This, in a nutshell, is the paradox of unanimity: sometimes, more agreement can actually mean less certainty. While we tend to trust decisions everyone supports, the truth is, the chances of everyone being truly independent and correct are surprisingly low. Why? Because we're human, and shared biases, groupthink, and even emotional contagion can easily sway everyone in the same direction, even if it's wrong. This doesn't mean every viewpoint needs to be extreme or completely different. But in ambiguous situations, where right and wrong aren't clear-cut, diversity of thought is crucial. It's like a puzzle: the more perspectives you have, the better chance you have of seeing the whole picture and finding the right solution. Here's the catch: blindly following the majority can be dangerous. Think about how easily rumors spread, even if they're untrue. In complex moral decisions, groupthink can lead to mass delusion, where everyone believes something is right simply because everyone else does. This can have serious consequences, hindering our ability to distinguish right from wrong and leading to harmful choices. So, the next time you encounter a situation where everyone seems to agree, remember the paradox of unanimity. Don't be afraid to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and see things from different angles. It might be uncomfortable, but it could also save us from making regrettable choices and pave the way for a more nuanced and just society.

7:39 me and my friend had almost this exact same discussion the other day about something else. I didn't want to do something and I gave a reason which he was able easily counter until I put in the work to figure out a good enough reason. It mainly happened because I didn't realize he was quite as passionate about it, nor just how lazy I was feeling about the idea. I could've just said no and thats final, but it would've made my friend upset with me for a while, so socially you need powers of reasoning.

I greatly appreciate the notion that we can not just appreciate the knowledge imparted to us by "classic" notions of debate, but that we ourselves might one day become that ancient teacher to our decedents. Where most channels skirt the actual questions they pose, few expend the energy to delve into them properly. Just kidding after reading the comments I realize that 99% of people here are still developing basic listening and comprehension. Maybe the real problem is human stupidity and self-righteousness.

This. Right now my country is stuck in a seemingly infinite loop of election cycles and nobody seems to offer any sort of legislation to prevent this from happening. What bothers me about this is that it made me conclude that the people that lead the system will never fix its flaws because, ultimately, it works in their favor. Even the smaller parties find it convenient. The biggest problem with democracy is that no matter what party gets elected, the public is still ruled by politicians. You can't trust politicians to rely on anything but their own interests, even if their intentions are great. A change in the system is too risky for a politician to make, unless they want to risk losing their seat.

THIS video makes so much sense about why I've always disliked how others think. When it comes to social reasoning? That was never me. I was NEVER interested in a truth that could possibly work, but ALWAYS interested in what THE truth actually was. So ANYTIME I encountered a possible truth that I hadn't encountered and fully considered before... I would go to the library and/or online and look for ALL the material I could possibly find with a proper description of that truth and why people believed it or not. Then once I'd fully evaluated the new truth, I'd determine whether or not it was more likely to actually BE the truth or not compared to any contradictory beliefs I'd held at that point... and then since contradictions cannot exist I would simply incorporate the new belief into my overall belief structures and get rid of all the previously-held contradictory ones if the new truth was determined to be the actual truth. And if not, then it would be actually kinda unfortunate since all that research I'd just done wouldn't lead me to have a change in my beliefs, but either way it would be worth it because I'd know about at least one more piece of information and whether or not it made sense with the world. I honestly grew up thinking I was special and thought differently from how others do because of how much better I'd be able to perceive the truth of nearly any given situation than everyone else. But I've spent the last HALF of my life at least thinking "okay no dude... you are NOT that special... everyone thinks the same you're not some crazy genius or anything just calm down." Yet FUCK! Clearly I actually AM this crazy god damn genius since there's apparently nobody else that thinks the way I do. I've spent so many of my later years just questioning more and more every god damn thing I thought I knew and just kept assuming I was probably wrong about tons of things. But no... fuck no man. I'm actually consistently wrong less and less over time BECAUSE of the unique way I think. AKA I already KNEW I needed more confidence in my life. But now I know for a fact that I have earned more confidence than nearly anyone I could ever meet in my life could possibly even come a billionth of the way close to.

Great Topic. That's why if you have a wish or dream, don't tell it to anyone. Telling anything about it invokes our tribal mind that starts to need all sorts of justifications, and checks in with the tribe, your mind will sabotage your plans on every step whenever something is off in the reason department. Don't speak of your dreams, don't speak of your plans. Do not beat a drum in the search of the fugitive. Just go and catch him silently. Without a word.

Wow! I randomly had the thought that politicians felt insufficient because they don't represent the needs and voices of an entire nation. They only support the needs of those like them and that's not good enough. That's why we have presidents that inevitably disappoint someone. You could reason how a president has done some good for a nation, but then you can also reason how they performed poorly. To hear that thought come to life in the words of such an intelligent person is so validating. I vote for the idea of lottocracy. I hope enough people get talking about that idea so our governments can be reformed one day. I'd gladly join that fight!

I guess no single person, no matter how virtuous, could please everyone… you ever heard of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - feature film, features an amazing main character, a real pacifist that coalesces the viewpoints of both of the morally justified forces and creates a beneficial situation that works for everyone, without hurting anyone. then some certain “people” complain that she doesn’t fight enough, that her solution wouldn’t work in the real world - I guess perfect isn’t good enough for some people!

@@vephar7064 talk about jealousy lol. I'm saying he's an authority because he has the resources to make things happen. None of this video mentions eugenics or euthanasia; in fact it barely mentions bill gates. This type of contrarianism is so common it's annoying. You think the entire world is out to get you, and belittle others for believing otherwise. It's a destructive mindset that only promotes isolation and regression of progress. I'm not saying bill gates is perfect, but I am saying it's irrational to discredit all of Michael's hard work on this video just bc his name gets mentioned once

I use this video as a landmark in time. I remember an experience after holiday 2020 where I felt the moment a new chapter of my life started. And it was about intuition, clarity, reasoning, understanding. Existential stuff. I'm grateful this uploaded very soon after that experience because it's one of the few "cannon events" from my life that was really the crux or turning point that got me through a lot. This videos like an anchor, in a sense. I've never related to any other content on the net or otherwise than this right here. This is the most significant. Thank you for that.

Literally 99% won’t see this but I lost my job due to covid. They shut down all the restaurants in Cook county which then led me to loosing my apartment. I'm currently living out of my car which I try and make the best of. I've applied to a bunch of places I'm hoping to get a call back. if anyone could help me with whatever you could bc I'm needing stuff like hand warmers which I stuff my clothes at night when it's cold. Also cheap burgers/fastfood. I know times are tough for everyone these days but if you're able to help me I have paypal username pay2winlife If you're unable to help I totally understand thank you🙏
