I'm surprised you never mentioned Plato's ontology. Throughout the whole video my brain was crying for it, this would solve so many of the posed questions! Plato would probably say a chair is a piece of furniture for one person to sit and lean back on. What happens if you remove some atoms from it? If you can sit on it, it's still a chair. When does it stop being a chair? When you can no longer sit on it.

I agree he did not talk about the purpose.
@royalninja2823
@royalninja2823 8 күн бұрын
That's extremely easily refuted, though. For any definition, you can find an object that clearly SHOULD be included in the definition but isn't, or something that SHOULDN'T but is. By your definition a bar stool isn't a chair and an examination table is. Hell, there's a famous example of this in popular consciousness; Plato's definition for a man was a featherless biped, so Diogenes came out with a plucked chicken yelling "BEHOLD, A MAN!" You may as well not even entertain the idea of existence through definition unless you go to the extreme he brings up in this video.
@ayumuchorizo4486
@ayumuchorizo4486 6 күн бұрын
If we're gonna follow what you say, that would make me think that a wall is a chair because I can lean my back on it and be in a sitting position - oh, same goes for the floor or the ground. Wait, so the whole surface of the Earth is a Chair??? A PERSON is a chair because you **can** sit on them! Does that mean horses, camels, and elephants are ALL chairs as well because we actually sit on them, on purpose, for travel? Are cars and bicycles just... "moving chairs"? We can go on and on, but at this point, almost everything can be called a chair. Then does **it** really exist? Because by that logic a "chair" becomes a concept we apply to things but not a thing itself. So the object in the thumbnail and what is beside Micheal is not 'a' chair but an assembled wooden frame that can function as the chair. I can also conclude then that the same wooden frame is a table because I can use the square surface to place my dinner so I can eat. Oh look, now it's actually just a Table which we happen to sit on. Doesn't seem like that line of thought sufficiently answers the question imo! 😂

Wonderful video Michael. One thing I would say is that to me a composite object 'exists' as long as it is more that the sum of it's parts. Okay, you might ask, but what do I mean by this? It means that it has some property for which the simples it contains are more important than the simples it doesn't contain. E.g. the atoms that make up a chair are important in allowing you to rest your butt on it. Existence is therefore a state of being in relation to an intelligence e.g. us. Stuff enters our horizon of understanding and things come into existence. I would not consider the 'incar' to exist because it does have any unique properties that cannot be understood be considering the garage and car separately.

Watching this video as Amie Thomasson’s daughter was so surreal! Not only was my mom cited as an expert, Whenever he cited another expert, I was like “oh, yeah, he came to our house for dinner; I baked a cake for him…” and so on. Plus all of the books in the video are literally in my house right now. Also, my mom loves that you put her in a video, and says she’s now a KZfaq star!

A chair is a piece of furniture with a raised surface supported by legs, commonly used to seat a single person. Chairs are supported most often by four legs and have a back; however, a chair can have three legs or can have a different shape. Chairs are made of a wide variety of materials, ranging from wood to metal to synthetic material (e.g. plastic), and they may be padded or upholstered in various colors and fabrics, either just on the seat (as with some dining room chairs) or on the entire chair. Chairs are used in a number of rooms in homes (e.g. in living rooms, dining rooms, and dens), in schools and offices (with desks), and in various other workplaces. A chair without a back or arm rests is a stool, or when raised up, a bar stool. A chair with arms is an armchair; one with upholstery, reclining action, and a fold-out footrest is a recliner. A permanently fixed chair in a train or theater is a seat or, in an airplane, airline seat; when riding, it is a saddle or bicycle saddle; and for an automobile, a car seat or infant car seat. With wheels it is a wheelchair; or when hung from above, a swing. An upholstered, padded chair for two people is a 'loveseat', while if it is for more than two person it is a couch, sofa, or settee; or if is not upholstered, a bench. A separate footrest for a chair, usually upholstered, is known as an ottoman, hassock, or pouffe.

@@spacebarbarian._ I feel like parts of the answer are in your comment. They know the context but the point of the joke is that their comment is misleading. That’s the joke. Maybe they’re making the joke bc of the content of the video or because, like in this case, the title of the vid is one like this one.

Maybe Michael can make a video to explain this. How does my body know where its limits are supposed to be? Example: Accidently took a decent chunk out of my leg with a chain saw. Over a long period of time with me tending to it it fills in the missing flesh, skin, and maybe the hair folicls.... and even the floppy bit that reattached shrank back down into position. It filled the missing gouge back in to the original boundry, that had no cells in it and none that were originally there.... If my body can 3d map out every cell and its proper location.... what stops it from reduilding limbs....

Someone needs a power scale Michael off of that statement that he just made there about him being death and the scattering how powerful does this make Michael if we take what he said literally.

We as humans have a problem of categorizing "things" into boxes. The photon is a wave, which when observed, becomes a particle. But the word becomes is wrong, because the photon is both a wave and a particle, it is us who categorize it, bringing it's form into reality. So too is the chair a wave, a group of simples, which when observed, is a chair. By simply observing something we can completely change it's reality.
