Vulvodynia is persistent, unexplained pain in the vulva. The vulva is the female genital area including the skin surrounding the opening of the vagina. It can happen to women of all ages. Vulvodynia can become a long-term problem but it can also be treated. Much can be done to help relieve the pain.
Vestibulodynia is chronic pain and discomfort that occurs in the area around the opening of the vagina, inside the inner lips of the vulva. This area is known as the vestibule.
In this video we will cover symptoms, treatment and prognosis.
I hope you enjoy the video.

Hi Dotothy, thank you for your question. It is difficult to assess on a KZfaq comment but it is a possibility. Is the pain mainly around the lower 2/3rds (two thirds) of the vagina? Very important to wash with only water and if needed an emollient. Do not use soaps. If you do have a bath then shower first wash then and just bath in warm water, no soaps. With regards to the pain you have, have you ever used a lidocaine gel (this is an anaesthetic topical gel), did it work if you used it? If never used it, then provided you are not allergic, then I would see if you would get any relief from this. If this worked then either continue to use or consider a course of Amitriptyline, or similar medication. If you live in the UK, visit a large sexual health centre for a full sexual health assessment. I hope this is helpful. Kind regards Dr Bret Palmer

Any trauma can cause or trigger vulvodynia. If the pain is the lower 2 thirds of the vaginal entrance, then could be yes. Use the treatments with consultation with a doctor. If improves then this would confirm the diagnosis.

Hi doctor. I had a laparoscopy surgery to remove endometriosis. After i had intercourse with my partner i got a UTI that lasted 2 months plus now i have shooting burning pain inside my vestibule it feels like a nerve pulling when i have to pee. I am also currently pregnant. Could you advise what i could do for the pain? What do you think it is? Thanks 🙏

Hi there, It is difficult to advise without a formal review and examination, so I would recommend a review with your doctor. You are pregnant, so you will experience changes around the vaginal area, especially in the last trimester. You'd need to be examined to see if you have point pain in specific areas (touching the skin with a swab, to see exactly where the pain is). If you do have point pains, and skin and area appears normal, then a trial of lidocaine gel to see if this helps maybe tried. Also a diagnoses of vulvadynia may need to be considered. If this is the diagnoses then try to avoid the use of amitriptyline while pregnant. Hope this helps. Kind regards Dr Bret Palmer

@@DrBretPalmer Thanks for your reply Dr much appreciated. 🙏 Yes i am currently being followed by my family doctor and gynecologist. They both agree my condition is vulvodynia but nobody can figure out what caused it. I was fine after the laparoscopy to remove endometriosis. My problem started after intercourse and got that bad uti. I do have a lot of redness going on inside and i was on 3 courses of antibiotics as my uti kept coming back. Or maybe a nerve got damaged inside after intercourse and thats causing my pain🤷🏼‍♀️ especially after surgery maybe i was not healed fully inside. I’m not sure doctor i am just hoping to get another opinion as my doctors are having a hard time figuring out whats the cause and what they can do to help my pain during pregnancy as its really painful 😓

Definitely try lidocaine gel, to see if this reduces the pain. Sometimes it can be caused by UTI or thrush, sometimes no cause. Watch my video on vulvadynia, may help you. Good luck, let me know how you get on. Kind regards Dr Bret Palmer
