I did this job w/o removing anything. 1/4" ratchet 10mm w/ extensions got both bolts and a ziptie around the old thermostat to pull it out. Cleaned with paper towels and used a air compressor to blow out coolant from the bolt holes. In not a small dude either and could get my arm under the intake '02 Passat w/ AWM motor.

I am replacing the heater core hose that goes to engine on the back. Will antifreeze pour out when i pull that hose off? I have been losing a little antifreeze over a year and now overflow is empty by morning. I reached around back of motor and grab the hose and squeezed it and it was leaking from the top.

Thanks for the video. helped me change my thermostat - was easier than I thought. Had to bleed the sysem afterwards though which was no big deal. You replied to another comment diagnosing a failed thermostat - had the same symptoms with my car - you nailed it! Car toasty warm and behaving itself again. Thanks again.

These vids even help me on this day. My 04' Passat GL Wagon with the AWM 1.8T and 5-Speed Manual just wants to keep running. Unfortunately tho the thermostat likes to stay open so time to replace. Appreciate the walk thru. Replaced the coolant temp sensor not long ago and refreshed all the coolant in it. Figures the thermostat now wants to throw a fit. All good tho. Always ordered an extra jug of Ravenol. Live in Central Wisconsin, where it gets just as cold as Germany. Knew where the thermostat was, but it always helps to watch over another person to remind yourself of what is ahead. Thank you.

Thank you. I was able to quickly confirm my judgement from your video that it would not be necessary to remove the upper radiator hose and belt and alternator like alldata says.

If you don't have heat inside the car... then the water pump is bad. Verify heat before you replace the thermostat.

You can also try to move the water pump impeller with your fingers when the thermostat is out.

So I just drove my aeb Passat for 30 minutes. It's 26 degrees Fahrenheit here in Michigan. It took almost the entire time just to creep out of the highlighted cold Zone. About 35% of the way to 190°. Then when I shut it off at a gas station for 5 minutes. I started it back up and it had gotten a lot warmer. Like the heat traveled through the motor. but then after 1 mile down the road back to where it was just above the highlighted cold area on the dash.

Good Evening Thomas. You may remember me😂 The VW has gotten me again either my thermostat housing has popped (gasket failed) or the hose right next to the thermostat blew out. And now im working on figuring out how to fix 👍

Forgot to mention at 16:00 that "no circulation of coolant" can be due to a faulty water pump. BUT, if you had heat BEFORE the thermostat was changed, then you should have heat AFTER as well... so most likely you have an air pocket that needs to be bled out.

My 2.8 A4 overheats after 20 min idling even when outside temp below 20. Seems to have poor coolant pressure to the heater core. Should I order pump or it might be just bad thermostat to start with? Hate Audi after this and love my E36 coupe lol. P.S. Great damn vide man! Thax a bunch!

Andrii Ostapchuk No sure what you mean by "poor coolant pressure to the heater core". If it doe not overheat while driving, then it is not a thermostat issue... check your cooling fans. Check for air getting into the cooling system. The heater cores on the Passat's & A4's can get clogged, so "no heat inside the car" can be misleading some times. Check for good flow into & out of the heater core. Thanks for watching & taking the time to comment!

***** Thanx for quick reply! What I meant by "low pressure to the heater" is that I don't see coolant coming to the heater inlet (right side when facing bay). When temperature gets to 5/8 on gauge Im getting coolant goes loco from the left house from engine which I have disconnected at moment to make sure coolant coming from core outlet. Core is cleaned 100% level is good. I even bled air from secondary bleeding point and it still won't get to core. Lower rad. hoes still cold no mater what. Upper hot as hell. Any clues? Im gonna make video for You. You my only hope before I have this car sold for 300$.

Andrii Ostapchuk Lack of flow is a bad water pump... would also explain why the bottom hose is not getting warm.

Thomas so I have been fixing my buddy's 99 Passat 1.8t and I finally got it all back together and got it running but since the battery was disconnected for year and half it has cause the tps to reset and its throwing dtc p1545. The throttle keeps surging. So I was told I need to get vag com. So I did that I paid 16$ for the disc and cable on Amazon. My problem is I can't get the program to resolve the issue because when I get to final stop of inputting group 98 in basic settings i get error message saying I need to activate or register the program first. Well I tried to but all the info I keep getting is saying it's wrong. All I want to know is if I need to register it or should I be able to fix this issue without registering/activating it. If you can shed some light on this I'd appreciate it. Thank you

Good video... i need to change my thermostat but wasnt entirely sure where it was (new to this platform of car, both VW and a turbo system). This showed me just how easy the job will be. So far, i like my car but it has been being a P.I.T.A. the last few weeks with breakdowns. First my coils failed (replaced them and drove great for 3 days), now i dont know whats going on.

@@EXOVCDS lol, I dont remember commenting on this video before not getting a response. But update, my timing belt needed replaced along with my clutch. Runs pretty good. Never did replace my thermostat (hence I came to this vid looking for it's location today). Bought the new thermo as my CEL is on for it now. Temp riding at 150° and no heat when moving. Car still runs pretty good especially considering I have it tuned to nearly 30psi boost. Absolutely loving the car.

+Sekai Brown Thank you... for thinking that "over all" the information was helpful. I record while I work using video glasses... thank goodness people can read / noticed the captions. I have several Deaf / Mute subscribers that have NO problems following my videos. I do not have a Production team that can help me with Voice Overlay, different camera angles, better video quality etc. People can always watch Scotty Kilmer, Eric The Car Guy, Briansmobile1, Mighty Car Mods, Humble Mechanic, Engineering Explained etc etc... all of whom I'm sure will be able to produce VW / Audi repair videos that are to there liking. Personally, I believe that my POV videos are the best way to showcase & learn a specific repair job... once one gets used to the POV action. Once I can quit my day job, I will be able to produce better POV videos. Thank you for watching... please don't take offense to this reply, I'm just explaining the reason for my style of video.

Fantastic video! Thanks for sharing. It's great to see work by people who really know what they're doing. (Got to get one of those hooks!) What was the red compound you put on the throttle body? I did this job by removing the alternator, and your way is definitely faster, but it gives you pretty good access.

I was suffering genuine anguish as I watched the housing screws dropping off the key just as you'd almost located it! I'm not a professional mechanic but a DIYer and things like that make me swear!

+morgz84 LOL... hope you didn't sweat too much watching this video! I usually use a piece of plastic bag or a piece of my rubber gloves to hold the bolt in the socket (works well)... not sure why I didn't do that in this video. Hmm

I am trying to remove the Tstat bolts on an AUG1.8T, but they are tight enough that either rounding the 10mm head of the bolt or breaking my 5mm allen key are potential concerns. These little bolts should NOT be high-torque items. Any suggestions?

There are sockets that are designed to bite - into the bolt head, on heads that are lightly stripped. Try knocking on the bolts to create vibrations through the bolt... that might help break it loose.

Hello Thomas, I have a 2002 Passat with a 1.8T engine. When the outside temperature is 32 degrees or above, my car blows hot air and the engine temp gauge is around 190 degrees. When the outside temp is below 32 degrees, I get luke warm air and the engine temp gauge stays around 90 degrees. Could it be the thermostat or something else?

Yes, could be a thermostat issue... if it is stuck open for too long, the temperature will drop during steady cruising speeds and will take longer to "warm up" when the vehicle is not moving.

I replaced the thermostat on Saturday and the heat is blowing extremely hot air!! The temperature gauge is now at 190 degrees. Thanks for putting up this video. It saved me over $300 from taking it to the repair shop. The temperature dropped to below zero degrees this weekend in Michigan. Perfect timing! Thanks again!

It should not make it difficult... but yes, a bit of cleaning will be needed. But even when not using silicone, I end up having to clean the rust off of the thermostat opening in the engine block... so, silicone or not, cleaning will probably take place. I use Ultra Black RTV Silicone (Permatex). Good for a lot of uses. Again... silicone is not needed, it's just a personal preference.

Could this explain why I have NO cold air at all ever and my heater works way TOO well? My check engine just came on last week (03 Jetta Non Turbo) and I took it down to the dude... says it's a P2181 code and needs new Tstat, which kinda makes sense. Never noticed my temp gauge overheating tho. Thanks for the video... you just saved me $200 :)

+TampaDiggers No "cold air" inside the car is NOT a thermostat problem. Look for a "heat control" issue (blend doors not working correctly, foam flying out of the vents etc). wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/18613/P2181/008577

tengo un 03 passat 1.8 pierde todo el antifreeze por atras del deposito le compre el tapon nuevo y sigue iguaal la aguja esta en normal temperatura cuando traabaja despues de unos cuantos miinutos espiesa a llenarse el deposito y lo echa afuera espero tu consejo gracias

Hardest part is making sure that the thermostat, o-ring and flange all sit correctly (don't leak). The rest is just remove and install... bleeding the system can be a bit tricky too, so keep an eye on the temperature once you start it up. Monitor the heat inside the car and shut it off & cool down if she gets too hot.

yea it was simple but I didn take the throttle body off jus the hose that goes to the intercooler. The only probably I had was when it came to replace it I found out Autozone gave me the wrong Thermostate and o ring.

No. The fan is activated when the ac is on... or, the ECM will command it on when temperatures get to high (when ac is off).

Very useful video. However, I can't find that tool you're using to remove the two thermostat housing screws. I typed in 1/4" universal into google and a bunch of different things are coming up. Can you give me a link of what you're using?

On another video the guy installed the rubber o-ring first (in the block), while you did it second. Does it matter?? I have a leak and have tried both ways with no improvement. And it is much more of a hassle on a Jetta!

It's just multi-purpose wheel bearing grease... if you install a new gasket, no sealant is needed. I find that the gaskets are usually ok (even though they have been squished) and the grease is just "my way" of filling the spaces between the mating surfaces. Thanks for watching! ​​​@@EXOVCDS I use high-temp disc-brake wheel bearing grease on every gasket. They NEVER stick! I was a marine mechanic in my youth, & The Boss DEMANDED that we put Rector Seal No.5 (plumber's pipe joint compound ) on EVERY bolt we touched. I used vice grips to remove bolts whose heads were nearly gone - rusted sway, that HE'D INSTALLED 20+years before. Sometimes I'd cut a slot in the head& use a manual impact screwdriver to loosen them - They NEVER stick! Ever! I use it on most bolts to this day!

Filip Lindälv It's a process that the ECM (engine control module) does to calibrate the throttle plate. Over time, the throttle bore gets dirty from PCV fumes. This dirt restricts air flow past the throttle. Whenever the throttle is cleaned, replaced or the battery was disconnected for some time... a throttle alignment must / should be done (in some cases the engine might nor run if the alignment is not performed. wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Throttle_Body_Alignment_(TBA)

The hose that attaches to the thermostat flange? Use a hose pick tool or flat screwdriver and wiggle it between the hose & the flange. Easier to do when the flange is off of the engine (two 10mm head bolts). I usually remove the hose with the flange attached... as seen in the video.

If that's the flange and you want to remove the heater core hose.... remove the metal clip completely, then you can wiggle the hose off of the flange.

I have a 2003 1.8 passat. The return hose fore the heater broke off, lost a ton of coolant. As a temporary fixed, we got the broken plastic piece out of of the hose from the connector on the engine side, slid the hose over the remaining plastic and tightened it down, no leaks. Now the car overheats only when driving, but not at idle. I refilled the, coolant, the heater is making heat without issue. Could this be an issue of not building pressure in the system first, or maybe a stuck thermostat?

Make sure that coolant flows back into the reservoir when the engine is running... Rev the engine to confirm flow. A stuck thermostat will cause overheating at idle as well... you might have air trapped in the system or a loose water pump impeller... but I can't tell from here. Doesn't this Passat have a large viscous fan that runs all the time? I wouldn't worry about the a/c stuff until the overheating is solved.

I considered air being trapped too. I was told there are 3 areas and a specific order to bleed the system om this engine. Is that true? And yes the fan does spin constantly with the engine

I'm thinking the water pump isn't the issue because there were no over heating issue at all before the hose popped off and all the coolant ran out.

Eric Henry probably not the pump then... follow the procedures that you read about. On stubborn engines I use my vacuum / filling tool. The squeezing of the hose that I usually do starts a siphon effect that works great most of the time. Pull back the hose at the heater core fitting and squeeze the upper rad hose, then, cover the small hole in the hose and release the rad hose. Oh, clamp the return hose at the reservoir shut and leave the reservoir cap off. Bleed the heater core till you get fluid out consistently.

+Rickard Olsson Most likely... compare instrument cluster temperature (using scan tool) with ECM coolant temperature. Or let idle till it shows 90c (if it gets there) and then drive... should not drop below 80c.

first off im definitely not a mechanic. now that's out of the way I'd like to share my situation... radiator reservoir cracked while driving... car slowly started getting hot so I pulled over... Friend checked the thermostat and it was cold while engine was hot got it hot on my way home a couple of times that day but I would pull over shut it off wait for a cool down and then drive a mile and shut it off before it got too hot... though I did get it hot 2 more times but he said I was fine as long and engine oil has no coolant in it? it sucks not knowing about cars...my question to you is would you recommend I change the thermostat? waterpump? when I called this guy to change my reservoir he didn't bother to check the thermostat and said it was fine after a few revs but this was not the case because with my stop and go method home took me 4 hours for a distance of like 7 miles ...yes a very bad day for me for it had even warned the guy... but anyways.... what are your thoughts? and how much do you charge for a job like this? I was even debating on buying the radiator water pump and thermostat just so I don't have any more problems...

Year, model & engine? When it starts to get hot, feel the lower radiator hose, should be warm.... turn the heater on inside the car to max hot & max fan speed. If you have constant heat inside the car, then the water pump is ok. If the heat goes away and gets cold, then the water pump is bad. Depending on engine, timing belt runs the water pump...so do all the timing belt related items as well.

Hey thanks for the video. I have a 2001 Audi A4 1.8 and I followed your video but my car is still over heating. I put in new thermostat and coolant. I had heat before I did it and after. The hose at the top is hot but the hose at the bottom is cold. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance.

Air pocket in the system... unless the water pump is bad. If you have heat inside then the water pump "should" still be ok. Are you only relying on the temperature needle & the overheat warning light? Do you have a scan tool so you can confirm the temperature that the ECM "sees". A bad temperature sensor can cause inaccurate needle operation. Try bleeding / filling the cooling system from more than just the coolant reservoir. Remove both heater core hoses, fill coolant into both (coolant reservoir cap off). Fill through the top radiator hose (disconnected at the radiator and lifting the hose up).

Thomas EXOVCDS Thanks for the reply. I still have heat so the water pump should be good. I'm only relying on the temperature needle and warning light. I don't have a scan tool. I tried bleeding it but still overheats. Also I let my car cool down for a day and started it and it immediately jump to the middle and the rides slowly to high.

If the needle jumps quickly after starting the engine... it might be an inaccurate reading (temperature sensor issue). Have you got a temperature gun to check coolant hose / engine temperature at various locations? I found a 2002 Audi A4 quatro 1.8t they said it had front end damage and the motor smokes they fixed everything cosmetic but I'm not so sure about the motor I'm thinking head gasket turbo burning oil or injectors stuck open I don't know what color the smoke is they didn't start the car because battery was dead the car is 1,800 is it worth it or would there be problems down the road

I have a quick question off topic. I just got my condenser and dryer and pretty much whole AC changed, and now, I hear a high pitched sound. I got it changed about a month ago, and thought it was just the sound of a new system, but it's still there. It's kinda like a sqonking sound, and happens more when I down shift or low rpms. Any ideas or have you heard of this happening?

+MrDjemal10 A stuck open thermostat will cause over-cooling... but the needle should still rise a bit. The leak inside is due to the heater core being broken (removal of dash is required to fix). If the needle does not move at all, you probably have a faulty temperature sensor... the heater core could have been stressed from an overheat incident. Replace the temperature sensor / get the gauge working again and check how hot the engine is running. The core will leak with age as well, so your engine might not be overheating... but needs to be checked / solved before installing a new heater core.

My 1999 Passat 1.8t aeb 5 speed is good in summer. Stays around 190°. But now in winter here, it stays pretty cold. Usually just above the 1/4 mark. But it does have descent heat. Not amazing. But I don't ever recall thinking I'm cold. I'm trying to determine if the thermostat is stuck open? Or leaking? But the car has been this way since I purchased it so I don't know how have these cars usually run in 25°F temps. Are they supposed to heat up to 190 and hold there or close still? I am also missing my belly pan if that can be taken into consideration for added cooling. The car has a APR tune, but I do not believe that would influence it any way.

Could be a thermostat issue. Can you get the temperature / needle up to 190F by holding the rpm at 2000 for a 5min (car not moving, heater off)? If yes, after it reaches 190F, take the car for a steady cruise. Needle should stay steady at 190F, if not, then the thermostat is bypassing too much coolant. Replace the thermostat.

@@EXOVCDS I can get it warm but I can never get it to190. I mean it runs beautiful. One of the smoothest idling 4 cylinder cars I've ever owned. I'll pay close attention to it today but most likely I'll buy the kit from ecs and swap it out. I usually don't boost it up to the 14-17 psi range it is capable of till it is up to operating temperature but it never really gets there so I never really get on it anymore. It does get fed nothing but premium 93 fuel though and has a test pipe. so for a while there I was kind of wondering if the modifications had an impact. But I'm starting to think not

The large cooling fan is always spinning... with a faulty thermostat, you get too much cooling because of that. Change the thermostat, if that doesn't help (and the temperature sensor & gauge are OK), block the radiator with a bit of cardboard (like truck drivers do)... but you have to be careful with that.

So there’s the rubber gasket for the thermostat, and then an o-ring for the housing as well? I just replaced my thermostat because it wouldn’t open…the old one didn’t either but neither were installed with a housing o-ring since I didn’t see one with the old thermostat. Im assuming that’s where it’s pulling air into the system, preventing the thermostat from opening??? Thanks In advance.

Some thermostats come with extra seals that are used in other applications / vehicles. VW & Audi thermostats only us / need the o-ring.

If you don't have heat inside the car then the water pump is bad... not circulating the coolant. I assume that you have a 1.8t engine (because you are watching this video). With the thermostat removed, you can check the water pump impeller to see if it is loose. Stick a couple fingers in the thermostat hole and try to turn the water pump... it should not move. If it does, then the water pump is bad. If it does not move, place the thermostat into the block, place the o-ring on the thermostat and then put the thermostat cover on top.

@@EXOVCDS yes no heat, I’m suspecting a clogged radiator or water pump..I have coolant flowing to the heater core I’m able to bleed a solid stream of coolant from the core hose and both core hoses get up to the same temp as the top rad hose, however lower rad hose stays cold and thermostat refuses to open. Was going to try a small hole in the thermostat and flushing the rad…I’ll pull the thermostat back out and check the pump when I get to the shop in the morning…should the thermostat open regardless of whether the expansion tank cap is on and holding pressure?

Thermostat is heat sensitive, not pressure sensitive... so cap on / off doesn't matter. If you have no heat inside the car, then the water pump is bad.

Even though the mounting bolts can be installed, the plastic flange might not sit flat or flush against the block. If one side sits a little higher (even though the bolts are tight) a leak might occur. Just saying to pay attention to the way the flange sits (there should be no gap between the flange and the block).

If the temperature needle rises slowly and drops when the vehicle is moving, then yes, thermostat. The heater core could be plugged... restricting flow into / heat into the car.

I have a AWM engine. Passat 1.8 T 2002.... I run some test again and I think the problem is in the cooling electric fan. But When I turn the AC conditioner is running fine. So I think it's the fan sensor located in the bottom of radiator hose... I will run may car and when is starting to get hot I will open the hood and see if the electric fan is running.

By the way. I release the air trapped just like you showed and also I change the thermostat twice. Even I put the thermostat is boiling water to see if its open and thermostat is ok.... but I still have overheating. so I think it the electric fan. Sergio Figueroa I have a very similar problem as you. Did you solve the problem? My 1997 ADR 1.8 20V engine overheats after timing belt change and I can't get it to bleed I guess.

No I never fix it... I don't know what happened.. I think I will change the tensioner. I suspect that the tensioner that make the water pump turn its the problem. .

I just replaced my thermostat on my 01 Audi b5 a4, followed every step but didn't disconnect the throttle body since I have small hands anyways my question is my temp needle inside rises faster.. before on my old one it took forever to rise to the middle but this new thermostat I put on makes the needle rise up after a 5min warm up but the car doesn't over heat idk if that's normal for a car to do that but the needle stays at middle even when I turn my heater on and another thing I don't have heat and both heater ore hoses are hot and so is the lower hose for the stat as well and no leaks no where any ideas? ?Just worried about it rises quicker.

Nicole Cluff Rising quicker is due to the thermostat working correctly (not opening soon) which is normal... did you have heat / better heat before? If yes, then you might have trapped air inside the heater core. If heat was also low before the thermostat install... you might have a plugged heater core or a problem with the blend door inside the dash (not switching to the hot air position).

Nicole Cluff Heat will remain in the engine longer because the thermostat is controlling the heat better... as long as the needle stays in the middle (does not go past), these new-to-you needle observations are normal. I'll look for some blend door info and will get back to you.

Once you get the dash trim out of the way to look at the temperature blend door lever / motor... you can check if the motor / lever is moving when the temperature settings are adjusted. I might not have found all the info you need, so you might just have to do-what-you-have-to-do to get at / under the heater box unit for a visual inspection. Make sure that all the other functions work (air flow up to windshield, down to feet, dash / face outlets etc)... if none of that works either, look for what they all have in common, power / ground supply. You might also just want to check for flow through the heater box first (disconnect the hoses when the engine is cold. Attach a garden hose to one end and check for a strong (equal to going in) flow coming out. Vag-com is diagnostic software that is almost equivalent to what the dealer uses. The software can be downloaded for free at ross-tech.com , but you need one of their diagnostic cables to be able to use it. The engine ECM should be able to relearn idle settings on its own... so you should not need vag-com If all you are doing is removing & installing the throttle body.

Most likely the thermostat... my next step would be to drive the vehicle and monitor the Coolant Temperature via ECM Data Blocks. If the temperature drops below 80c during the test drive (from a starting Idle temperature of 90c), I would then recommend thermostat replacement.

It could also be that the blower motor has dead spots. Ignition on, turn the blower to any speed. If it does not turn, open the hood and remove the cabin air filter (if it has one). You should be able to see the fan of the blower motor. Give the fan a little push with your finger or a screwdriver. If the fan starts spinning, then the blower motor has dead spots and needs to be replaced.

Temlertti If the pump is driven by the timing belt, then yes, they came with plastic impellers. The earlier versions had pumps that were mounted to the side of the block (with metal impellers) and could be changed without touching the timing belt.

Not sure why it would act like that... how old is the water pump? Plastic or metal impeller? Air usually bleeds itself out of the system (into the coolant reservoir) on its own (as long as the return hose is not plugged). Overheating issues at higher rpm may be a sign of water pump slipping, but if it's a metal impeller... then it can't be that. Strange.

Thomas EXOVCDS It’s a metal impeller, I replaced it like 6-7k ago when I did timing belt. I don’t know it could be slipping water pump, the coolant level goes down when I drive it few minutes but it comes back when I remove the cap, I checked the temperature with my ond2 and i saw the temperature keeps climbing all the way to 120, but it usually comes back to under 100 in a few seconds

@@wafi3187 coolant can't go down & then come back up... unless there is air in the system. Coolant going down should mean that the air is now in the bottle. Air can't get back in... unless it's air from the engine / compression gasses leaking past the head gasket. I'm thinking you have a head gasket issue.

As mentioned in the video.... if you do not get heat inside the vehicle, then it is a good idea to check for / bleed-out air at the heater core bleed hole 16:50 With high enough rpm, the air should be pushed out of the core from coolant flow alone (that has been my experience). When replacing a heater core, I fill the core first then attach the hoses and check for air at the bleed hole. When the coolant level no longer drops in the reservoir, you can put the cap back on. The system can then build pressure, which can help push air out of the bleed hole... should any be left. Always keep an eye on the temperature gauge... if the needle goes past the middle mark (90c / 190F), something is wrong / air in the system, thermostat, water pump etc.

@@lukakivela974 Make sure that engine oil level is OK. You might have a problem with the variable intake camshaft timing , oil operated chain tensioner / solenoid.

How long have you had no thermostat... if it's more than a month, it's probably ok without one. You will get better fuel economy & heating with a thermostat. I would install one if it were my car.

Hi i have a question, i just bought an 04 audi a4 1.8t and i guess the seller took out the cooling fans cus some was wrong with them, so rite now im driving the car without cooling fans, do you think it will hurt anything now in winter? i know i will need to put 1 on in the summer. I have vag com and i scaned the car for codes cus its got a check engine light on and i get 4 engine codes P1931 P1672 P2181 P3081 thanks. and the heat works it doesnt get too hot but its hot enough i guess.

met rusani They all have to to with the cooling system issues (missing fan and possible a faulty thermostat). As long as the temperature needle does not get close to 3/4 high, you are probably ok to drive *** but don't hold me to that!!! *** Standing still for too long / idling will probably get the temperature to climb, so be aware of that.

met rusani you can block air from flowing through the radiator with a piece of cardboard or install a new thermostat. In both cases you will have to make sure that the temperature does not climb too high (because you have no rad fan).

+emanonup Be careful... interference fit engine. if the timing belt (cam & crank) timing is out, valves can bend / get damaged.

hector picos Nunca he visto sensores de oxígeno causar ese problema. Yo me cercioraría que no exista ningún salidero de aire. Por casualidad la luz del motor está encendida. Si es así que códigos hay grabados en la computadora. Eso ayudaría muchísimo. Un poco más de información no sería útil

I have trouble when I start it, the sensor lights turn on, it takes a while for it to stay still(it shakes) and it sounds like a little explotion coming from the motor while its on. What do you think the problem may be?

Leo Lezama You need to check for fault codes in the ECM. The engine might be misfiring (p0300, p0301, p0302 etc). Use a scan tool to check for codes and then post the code(s) here. I can then make a better guess.

@@EXOVCDS my car does the same thing as Leo's car code p0302 changed plugs changed packs and. The only thing leaking is the rear coolant flange. Could that be my problem and thanks.

A leaky rear flange will not cause misfire codes... unless you run low on coolant and overheat the engine and then get misfires due to a blown head gasket. Fix the coolant leak (replace the flange) and see what happens.

I used the gasket / o-ring that came with the thermostat... RTV silicone is not needed (VW only suggest to lube the o-ring with coolant) but I apply it as a secondary measure.

It won't run really cool / cold, but you will notice that the temperature gauge swings back to the cooler side during cruising speeds instead of staying in the middle of its travel. At idle, the gauge / needle will come back to the middle 90c / 180F. Heater output in the vehicle will also be affected... taking longer to warm-up and will lose some heat during cruising speeds.

***** Mine was fine last winter in cool weather. this winter it runs max 1/4 up on the gauge then back to under 1/8th when i start driving kinda need iit to warm up more than 100 degs lol.... it gets cool in the car

Pete L Sounds like a thermostat that's always open... if it did not get cold inside the car, then I would say faulty temperature sensor, but since your heat is also disappearing... replace the thermostat.

+patrick collier How old is the timing belt & water pump? Does the fan clutch work correctly? Do you get good heat inside the car? Could be due to a bunch of different things... loose water pump impeller, thermostat not opening fully, fan clutch not grabbing good, cooling system restriction etc.

ok so my car is going through coolant flanges like crazy... every single one cracks... the head gasket was replaced 27k ago.. could this be the problem?

William Lein What engine? Where does it crack? Is the engine running hotter than it should? Is there more pressure in the system than there should be? Is the reservoir cap defective / not venting (changing caps is a cheap first step)?

William Lein Sorry, I was thinking transverse mounted 1.8T... yours must be sitting front to back. Yes, that heater hose clips in. You are sure that the flange is cracked... not the plastic piece on the hose? There's a seal in the plastic fitting that attaches to that flange... maybe that seal / hose is no good.

A bit more info - my temperature gauge doesn't go past 60 degrees using the number 45 on the climate control. There is heat from the heaters but the coolant is always cold with no pressure. It's also got bad fuel economy. I've had the temperature sensor replaced twice and it's still the same problem. Would an amateur be able to do this?

Yes, sounds like a thermostat that is opening too soon / staying open too long. I don't have a TDI thermostat replacement video, but it is easier on your TDI than on this 1.8T (more room). You will need a 10mm swivel head socket & long extension (just like in this video). When removing the flange, the small plastic pins that hold the thermostat against the flange will usually break... so buy a new thermostat flange when you buy a thermostat. You can drain the coolant form the one of the oil cooler hoses or drain right from the thermostat flange (once it is removed).

James McCloud Did you lose coolant because it overheated or did you lose coolant and then it overheated? If the engine has an air pocket, that can cause the engine to overheat. Try bleeding the cooling system at various locations... to remove as much air as possible.

I’m havin over heating issue took thermostat out and it was stuck closed but when it over heated I had heat then when it heated up it went to cool like the air did so what could that be heater core or what ?

If it's a 1.8T passat... it could be that the water pump impeller is loose (causing no circulation of coolant through the heater core). The stuck thermostat (if it was stuck closed) could have stressed the water pump, causing the plastic impeller to come loose. You can check the water pump impeller by removing the thermostat cover and reaching into the block to try and turn / spin the water pump impeller. If the impeller spins, then the water pump is bad. The other possibility for no heat inside the car, is air in the system. If you did not bleed all the air out (after having removed the thermostat) try running the engine at 3000 rpm for 5 minutes. The higher rpm can help push air out of the engine & heater core, back into the coolant reservoir. Obviously keep an eye on the temperature gauge when you do this... needle should not move past the middle towards 3/4. If it does, something is wrong. Shut the engine off and allow to cool down.

Dance Unlimited Make sure that the small return hose (that is attached to the reservoir) is free to flow fluid / not plugged (disconnect it and blow into it to check). Fill as much fluid as the reservoir will take. Squeeze the upper & lower radiator hoses to get the fluid sloshing which "should" cause the fluid level to drop. In some cases, you need to either remove a coolant temperature sensor from the system, so that air can get out. You can also remove a coolant hose (just remove it a little bit from the fitting that it attaches to) so that air can get out. Did you work on the system or are you having overheating issues all of a sudden?

@@hamani9976 What is the actual issue / what is telling you that the thermostat is not working? Overheating? A low sitting temperature needle? Yeah... most humans have heads that move. It's a weird side effect when the camera is in the glasses. If you can't follow along with what is happening... you might not want to try to do the actual repair (even if you do find a better video). When something is not in view... common sense is used to fill in the missing information. Most people ask questions... to which I provide answers. Most people don't bother to record while at work, in order to be helpful to people. I do and I am. Thank you for watching.
