Dweezil gets a full day of attention in this VW Beetle Restoration as we gather parts, disassemble the front beam suspension, press out the ball joints, and prepare for a day of sandblasting. A small mystery with the steering column is solved and we make a little time for some smoked salmon. Who says shop food can’t be good? Haptic Garage I’ve always felt that a work in progress that I can still drive and enjoy is better than having a vehicle that is “finished”. You can get a feel for how the car is, tweak your overall plan and make adjustments as time progresses. Not to mention you get more time enjoying the car than sitting in the garage. Although that’s just my opinion.

Well said, VWJawbreaker. To each their own, but what you've described works best for me. The RV project fits this approach- I wouldn't want to miss out on the trips that have taken place during its progress. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I have a 1970 Bug that I inherited from my late Grandmother. It was the last car she ever owned... I have the bug body and pan separated, but haven't gotten much past that. However, watching this series is definitely motivating!! I need to get back out to the garage and get a few things accomplished. Hopefully I'll be able to restore the old girl like I promised my Grandma! Thanks for posting these!

Very thorough approach. 4 wheel drums work ok, as long as the maintenance is done. I guess it really depends what engine you choose and how fast you want the bug to go. Front disc brakes are definitely a great option and pads will last and last.
@HapticGarage
@HapticGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Aussie Beatle- I'm hoping I'll be satisfied with the drums but either way, I think it's a healthy starting point to get the stock version as designed and go from there. Seems there's a good chance I'll be happy with it because its simple and I have no current intentions of adding a big powerplant. Regardless, it's great to have options! Thanks for your continued support!

Cool or hot great progress, we have a few bugs where on the backplate the star adjusters steel tap broke did not know they were available where at ?? In Nov. when i get cleared to work again, I will pick back up on my 67 bus. where i pulled the beam out installed new Link & King Pins did a lot of welding patch work on the beam now it is time to assemby back together if i can remember where i put all the parts. I think all of our VW's are living documents and will never be done. Like you siad need to get them drivable first.. Enjoy your heat it will be 20F with wind chill in Iowa this weekend..

Not seeing anyone addressing bearing removal on the ball joint front beams ?
@HapticGarage
@HapticGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Charles, I'd be interesting in see that too- haven't had to do it myself. If I do need to remove the bearings at some point, my first guess would be to dig through my press fittings made for pushing out a bearing race and hope one fits. Then I'd try to adapt it for use with a slide hammer. Just a guess but that's where I'd start. I hope this helps!

Curious what type of grease you put in the steering box? I'm seeing different options and was curious what is typically used.
@HapticGarage
@HapticGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Stephen, two sides of the best steering box lubricant debate focus on grease vs. oil; I'm currently in the oil camp. The argument against using oil (I currently have mine filled with 85W90 gear oil) is a greater possibility of leaks. I do have a small amount of weeping on the steering shaft, but no significant drop in oil level. The best argument against grease that I've found was the dried up clay that came out of the box. I believe we find consensus in something is better than nothing!

how do you feel about disk brake conversions?
@HapticGarage
@HapticGarage 2 жыл бұрын
I've never swapped in a disc brake setup so I don't really know. My inclination is they may not be necessary for stock-ish builds. My '67 bus has well maintained stock drum brakes that are very effective... I've had a few quick stop situations that shut both sliding windows without fade or skidding. Fast VWs with big engines may have different needs, but it can't hurt to make sure the stock setup is working properly before making the switch.

hey buddy! What's up? her commenting on an relatively old video from you. I am used to whack the b-joints and press them in with the hydraulic press. I am curious as to what measure did you use on the "receiving" sockets, because I no longer want to tear myself up by banging b-joints off with a heavy hammer lol. Though it's really stress-relieving, believe me, it also sucks your energy like crazy.
@HapticGarage
@HapticGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Hey VochoTalacha! Great question... I took some old parts out to the garage to recreate the project and am pretty sure the smaller receiver socket was 1-5/8" and I'm certain the larger was 1-3/4". These are thick wall impact sockets; not sure if that is necessary but they worked well without flexing. The other challenge (which I'm sure you know) is to provide a "drop zone" for the part to move into. Assuming the nut and camber adjuster are removed, a 3/4" drive deep socket worked well with the ball joint stem aimed down the middle of the socket. And I agree, way better than swinging a hammer! I hope you and yours are doing well and congratulations on your channel's continued success!
@VochoTalacha
@VochoTalacha 3 жыл бұрын
@@HapticGarage thanks a lot for replying, man! I sure am going to look for them sockets or something similar, but the measurements sure do help out to have a notion. I know this buddy who does metal and lathe work, so we can probably work out something for this, and who knows, maybe forged custom dies for this application. Thanks for your compliments about the channel. I look forward to sometime personally know and shake hands with fellow VW youtubers from the US. How about you being part of the list? Looking good... Now I got a 70 typ3 that as of today got 3 of the front end trailing arms out, but after reinstalling the PAX side arms and removing the DRV side upper arm. still was not able to pull the LOWER arm out from the axle. Set screw is out, but will a puller this lower arm will not budge! Any idea, THANKS! My name is Volkmar with middle name Willie so that is why they call me VW, not because I own a 70 Sqrbk.
@HapticGarage
@HapticGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Hey VW, thanks for watching! You may try removing the center grub screw that secures the torsion plates, then remove the remaining arm and plates as an assembly. Then you may further investigate why the arm is stuck to the torsion plates. I'm suspecting damage on the plates. Let us know how it goes!

@@HapticGarage Howdy Dweezil, THANKS for the quick answer. You may be right that there may by some damage. The car was in a front end crash in 1972. So I think unless I see too much grease leak at the arm, I think I will leave it alone and just clean everything around it for now. Thanks again for your help, VW
