A quick video detailing the start to finish removal, repair, and replacement of the headunit in my 2019 VW Passat with a defective Touchscreen. This is a common problems in VW. Save yourself $1500+ by doing this repair yourself.
My vehicle is out of warranty so I wanted to attempt my repair myself. Check with your local dealer and find out if your still under warranty before attempting this repair.
I highly recommend disconnecting the battery before you disconnect the trim with the ABS status light as you will start pulling a DTC that you will have to get cleared with a scan tool if at anytime you attempted to start power up the car to put it in neutral.

Tools needed are Torx Drivers T20, T9, T6
Some plastic trim removal tools.

Update Dec 2023**** Looks like the ebay link I have posted is no longer valid. Basically for my 2019 VW Passat Wolfsburg I search ebay using this "6.5'' Pastable Touch Screen Digitizer for VW MIB STD2 Car Radio Multimedia Navi" I used the clear version as I didn't like the colored one. I want to wish everyone Fröhliche Weihnachten!. I also wanted to say I do not receive anything from this video financially nor do I want anything either. I honestly get satisfaction with your comments and to know that you fixed something that saved you some money and also kept fixable electronics out of the landfill. In the end I think VW needs to pick up their game with quality control. I have other issues with my VW 2019 Passat that I might make some future videos of.

I have replaced the digitiser for £10 and it took me less than an hour to replace it. The instructions were very clear and you made it simple. Thanks

I don't normally comment but this was an excellent well explained well filmed video. I had the same issue in my Transporter T6 so I watched a video on trim removal for that before switching to this video. I did it in about 30 minutes just pausing as you were slightly quicker doing the screws. Each step very well explained. I had a dodgy touchscreen and also it was very slow to respond to any commands. Now working perfectly. I paid £30 for the digitiser on ebay and saved a massive job!

Just did this a few days ago on my 17 Passat. Everything seems to be working like new. I’d say it’s completely worth doing on your own compared to paying an arm and a leg for the dealer to replace. Thanks for the tutorial.

Just wanted to say a massive thank you for making this video. I just followed it slowly and carefully and now have a fully working head unit again for the cost of £30. Much better than the £600+ for a refurbished unit. Your instructions were so clear they really gave me the confidence to give it a go and I am really happy with the result. If anyone has this same problem with their head unit, and it seems to be pretty common on this model, give the repair a go. This video tells you everything you need to know. Just finished my repair. Few things to note about are the black and yellow ribbon cables attached to the motherboard. There’s two notches on either side of the ribbons and they need to lock into the two metal ledges located on the connector. Also, you can get away without disconnecting the trim piece. Just set it aside. Overall this repair is pretty straightforward. Take your time and don’t skip steps. I bought my digitizer off eBay for $18 and it was shipped overnight. Thanks for the video man! Completely fixed my infortainment, big thanks for posting the video. $28 fix instead of the $1500 I was pricing a used head unit and sending it off the be “jailbroken” to work with my VIN. Even if you replace the unit, it will eventually break, so a quick fix is amazing.

BIG THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!!!!!! Saved me no telling how much money. Follow this video and take your time and you’ll be fine. The only thing I couldn’t do, is get the face to “snap” back on with the two side tabs, but I just put the screws back in and it is fine so far. Dont think it’ll matter with the screws back in.

Just replaced the digitizer in my 2015 VW scirocco by following your directions after it was going nuts with ghost touches and pretty bad dead spots and all is working great 👍 Took me about 2 hours as i had to battle with getting the thing out of the car! After that was done, it was plain sailing.

I followed your video and was able to do the same as you - fitting the new digitiser screen over the old one, gentle with the electronics and ribbon cables and it is now working perfectly! @@HI-fn7mk yes the screen worked. It was only the touch part of it that did not. There are 2 ribbons going from screen to circuit board. One does touch the other does display.

@@reviverenewrepair I tried that many times but when it turned "on" again, the screen was still all black. at this point idk what to do since VW charges 2200 euros (yes!!) for a new headunit. I was thinking maybe I should renew the lcd display as a whole? costs around 300 euros from aliexpress but not sure if it will help Do you have any other tips maybe? or something I need to take into account when replacing the LCD screen as a whole?

Fantastic video. I have just replaced the screen on a VW Transporter T6 2017 model with exactly the same head unit with the same issues 🥲. If you do this remember to get a Torx T9 and T6 screwdriver. Great fix for around £15. Can't believe it worked😀.

I replaced the screen with help of this video. Works perfect. I missed a small part in the video of putting the print plate on top of the screen. The connectors of the screen was a bit short. So i put the print on the screen outside the casing and then put it in few mm more worked great. Top video man thanxs.

Thanks so much for this. I managed to get this completed with the addition of a Tiguan radio removal video. Touch screen is back to working and I've finally be able to pair my new phone. I wasn't able to fully remove the motherboard, something was preventing it from coming out at the "knob" end, but it opened enough for me to be able to "post" the screen through and thread the ribbons through.

Replies to my video about peopling telling their story, like yours and others, are what make my day. So glad people are out there gaining the satisfaction of fixing their own property instead of binning it or paying through the nose having it replaced by someone else. Society is becoming a throw away and buy more culture. When I was a kid I remember when our TV or appliance broke we would take it down to the local repair shop. Now fast forward 30 years I see hundreds of flatscreen TVs down at the local recycler for example. I fixed my Plasma flatscreen a few times since I bought it in 2005 and its still chugging along. I have no real skills nor education but what I do have is curiosity of how things work and how to fix them if they break. We need to foster and promote this with the youth of this world. Peace!!!!

Thanks for this - great clear instructions. Followed to replace the touch screen on my Tiguan for a fraction of the cost VW want to replace what was a very faulty screen. It was flicking between functions and even called up my daughter on my mobile that was connected. Screen obtained from Sian Mobile. A little bit more than AliExpress, but happier with a UK supplier.

So great news this video was amazing and extremely useful. Bad news, my touch panel was cracked so I was forced to replace it. Long story short, the LCD now has dead pixels. On the bright side I can actually now interact with android auto

@@HI-fn7mkNah all this video shows is how to replace the touch layer of the screen. Black screen could multiple amount of things. For mine, the touch layer of my screen had a crack in it stopping the touch from functioning properly but the display still worked. So i had to remove the old touch layer that was adhered to the LCD with a disgusting amount of adhesive.

Excellent tutorial. Used it for my 2016 Jetta GLI and aside from the dash trim removal it was identical. Dash trim removal on the Jetta is similar fashion. Start at the bottom and slowly work your way around.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. My model was slightly different (sometimes different size of screws and sometimes a few more screws at different places holding the unit together) but it was very easy to do the repair step by step. The radio / navigation system its screen wasn't responsive for 70% of the screen (right hand side) and the unit often wouldn't react anymore due to false inputs. After re-installing the unit the issue was solved for a total cost of less than 10 EUR (incl. shipping) instead of a replacement unit exceeding 1000 EUR. Thanks once more!

Thanks for the instructions. It works great, but between cleaning the old digitizer and sticking the new one on, a speck of dust slipped in without me noticing 😩 Looks a bit strange now, you could also say individually 😆 but it saved a few hundred euros.

Just replaced mine, twice (or nearly so). Removed protective plastic from front and back but screen looked awful. Bought another, went to fit it and realised there was a second plastic shield which was v difficult to see. Removed that and it's all good 😅

23:37 Hi, Do you know which of the ribbon connectors controls the screen illumination. I did the switch and have touch sensitivity but now a black screen. Great. My touchscreen didn't World after the warranty period. In the Vw store were i bought my car (Vw Caddy mark IV), said me the car need a New radio, cost around 1200 euros. Is the model you shaw us, similar than the Caddy have?

2017 Jetta GLI here. Touchscreen has been non functional for over a year. Only the extreme bottom right and bottom left works. Same deal - the dealer quoted like $1800 for a new head unit plus install at $120/hr. This appears to be a chronic issue for VW. I even wrote to VW Canada to complain and ask them to develop a cost effective solution for owners. It seems to me they could easily sell or provide a replacement screen and digitizer unit that can be retrofitted fairly painlessly. I think this should be a TSB. Anyway, I am going to go ahead and do this operation, thanks so much for your video.

Yes those symptoms you’re mentioning indicate a dead digitizer.

Finally got around to doing this on my scirocco. One question though...I have a bit of a yellow halo around the edges of the screen. Any idea what might cause this? Overtightening of the unit? Cheers.

Sounds like over tightening too me. Not all the digitizers out there are the same thickness. I know it’s a silly question but did you pull the protective film off both sides? I’m sure you did but had to ask. Sometimes due to digitizer width you cannot clip the metal retention cage all the way and it kinda just sits there floating. If you do manager to force it on and screw everything down to tight when the weather gets warm the screen will crack. Hope this helps and good job on the repair.

You skipped over the reseating of the ribbon cable. But considering that by following your instructions I saved me a chunk of change, it becomes a moot point.

Hey, just curious whether this fixes the buttons down the sides too? My screen is ghosting and changing channels on the radio, however the buttons don’t work sometimes either??! Is this simply because the screen is going mad preventing the buttons from being used? Thanks 🙏

In response to my own question; it’s because the screen is ghosting so hard that my buttons were not working! I paid £7.99 for a new digitiser, and with these instructions managed to fix my screen!!! 🙌🙌🙌🎉🎉🎉😍😍😍 Amazing video, thank you so much! 🙏🙏🙏

Just finished and it works perfectly. Thank you so much. Mine was on a Skoda Yeti but the basics were all the same. A couple of tiny tips to add. When you replace the circuit board, if your short term memory is as bad as mine(!) ignore the screw holes with gold edging. They are used by the cover that goes on next. I did ‘lose’ the old touch screen connector under the board but guess it would have been neater and obviated the risk of its thickness damaging the board if I had just cut it off.

I would disassemble and try again. Be very careful with the ribbon cables and ensure that they are seated properly.

It's your digitizer. Mine used to do that too. Started on the bottom right and got worse. Doing a hard reset by holding in the power button until it completely reboots works for a bit but it always fails after that. Hopefully VW see's this video and decides to do something about it.

Hey, how about the brightness? I have installed one in my golf 5 and I notice a poor brightness, especially when the sun shines on it.

There are different types of digitizers out there. Some that are clear and some that are tinted. It sounds like you may have the tinted version?

@@reviverenewrepair i don’t know, in the night it’s perfect, but in the day when the sun shines on the screen i see almost nothing. The aftermarket pioneer i had before looked 1000 times brighter 🥹

Hey i have a 2017 volkswagen jetta. One half the screen doesnt work. I see the screen itself is on but when i press on the buttons to the right in the touch screen nothing happens.. i even restarted the screen

The symptoms you are describing indicates a dead digitizer. Replace the digitizer and breathe some new life into your stereo. 😊

@reviverenewrepair hi so like for example when I press on the setup button which is on the right bottom it doesn't work.. or when I try yo click on any letter in the middle going to the right of the screen it doesn't work.. is that a digitizer issue? Vw is gonna charge out the wazuu.. maybe.. can another expert mechanic fix that

Yes what you describe is the same issue I also had. Half my digitizer went dead. I could do a hard reset that would work for a bit but the issue would return. Digitizer replacement will fix it. It’s pretty easy to do and it is a rewarding feeling fixing something yourself instead of spending $1000 to replace.

I'm not sure how much the screen is but the digitizer was only $15. Very quick and cheap repair. Like others said it may not last for ever but at least I can get another couple of years out of it. VW needs to look into this.

@@majidrezvani5714 Sounds like you may be having more issues with your headunit than just a broken Digitizer. If its stuck at just a VW logo have you tried a hard reset by holding in the power button for 10 seconds?
