Nice one. Just saw another video where the drive shafts were taken out, so this is a much easier way to do it. Cheers!

Thanks for the info. Like the fact that you don’t need to disconnect the drive shaft with your method! Top marks🤙🏻

After taking a second look at your video, the only thing different between the type2 and the type 3 is just the swing arm/bearing housing position. Thanks once again for your video.

Thanks! Got me past the brake assembly removal without banging hard on it. And good job for a short, informative video. Too many others on youtube need to learn how to shoot and edit videos or stop posting.

That was useful ty, my rears don’t have anywhere the play yours do. In your opinion is it better to remove the hubs and replace the bearings using this method or remove the drive shafts and install them insitu?
@nickhogg1357
@nickhogg1357 4 жыл бұрын
This isn't a bearing replacement, it's a simple bolting off and bolting on of the hub (here's one I made earlier!). The bearing replacement procedure is totally different to this, and doesn't involve disturbing the brakes at all.

Thats great if you carry a spare hub which is pre loaded with a new bearing........

Dan!? Can I run something past ya. I read several cats do the same as you (for obvious practical reasons) in having a spare fully assembled spare rear bearing carrier assembly with bearings ready to go. My question is how do you then manage threading the axle back through a loose spacer between the bearings? Do you keep a wooden rod or something in there to keep it in place which you pull out as you thread the axle back through? Or some other mad crazy clever trick? Thanking you in advance. Big VW Love.

Thank you for the tip of leaving brake assembly in one piece, very helpful. Btw do you tighten main nut while car is on the jackstand, meaning all pressure goes to gearbox? I wonder if that can damage gearbox.
@Bodhi504
@Bodhi504 Жыл бұрын
You should tighten/loosen the hub nut when NOT on an axle stand or jacked up.

Removing the hub worked perfectly, I changed the bearings in the old one but I cant get the hub on again. I've tried pushing it on using the bolt and different distance rings but it won't go on. Do you have any tips ? Thanks from sweden!

Great video, I'm planning to do the same. I just can't get the big nut off. The long pipe didn't work for me. I even put a jack below the pipe. Any tips for that?
@CampervanCulture.com-Official
@CampervanCulture.com-Official 8 жыл бұрын
Hey Martjin, here is a plan.. Go to your local garage (you call them shops maybe?) with the correct socket for the castle nut. They will have pneumatic tools that vibrate like mad that loosens the sucker off if it's stuck. Get them to pop your socket on the air gun (just incase they don't have that size) and they will get it off with one hand in around 3 seconds. Then just get them to put it back on again.. Give them a small box of donuts and offer to give them some money (That they will not take for 3 seconds of work). Drive off and then when back at home and all relaxed just follow the fitting video at your own pace now the nut can be taken off after 30 years of relaxation. When done grab a beer and sit back and congratulate yourself for following CampervanCulture.com and we hope one day to join you with beers.. I hope this helps. Jed

Hi Jed, I took the bus to the shop and they had a bigger pipe and took it off. Now I'm reassembling again, but I can't get the axle trough the bearings. It is sticking out about 1 inch and now it is stuck. can't get it out or in... any more tips?
@MartijnGarnier

Hi Jed, thanks for the mental support, by just asking and taking a break. I got it!!I gently bolted the housing of the bearings to the car until the driveshaft couldn't rotate any more, then I used the old bearing and the big nut to pull the driveshaft out, so now putting the rest together, take a nice cold beer and take it to the garage for the mot on thuesday
