Could be linkage (too much freeplay not transferring movement to engage 5th) or 5th is gone. 5th gear can be accessed by removing the transmission end cover (remove driver side wheel first) for a closer inspection, but first, I would have someone move the shifter inside the car, while you look at the linkage in the engine bay. Look for a delay in movement / freeplay in the linkage that could affect 5th gear engagement.

@@EXOVCDS the linkage seems to be decent...a little movement from a worn bushing in the back end of the guide rod but it feels right. Upon inspection the 5th gear set appears to look good. Now I cannot say as much for the fluid. It was mud brown, but exactly how does that gear set work. Should they spin freely until the synchro is pushed in by the fork making them engage? What is my test. Put it in 5th and see what the gears do? Could that nasty fluid cause that? I'm going to flush and clean and refill Thanks again.

@@EXOVCDS thanks. I actually watched that video earlier...lol. everythjn g appears to be working ok inside the trans.. I'm going to go through the linkage.

You need to pay more attention... then the movement won't bother you. Or you can ask questions... and get answers from me.
