I finally got the time to clean the intake on the 2014 TDI Touareg. It was not as bad as I expected. The engine runs much better now.

If you don't want to do the complete inlet manifold stripdown. You can do a very easy partial strip down and clean. We took off only the Throttle body and the swirl flap assembly. Both are shown in the first section of this excellent video. Ours were very dirty with carbon build up. The swirl flap assembly was so thick with carbon that the flap couldn't move. We Cleaned them all up and refitted them. The Improvement in mpg is excellent. Our mpg on motorways has gone up from around 45 to 48mpg to around 54 to 56mpg. Even managed a sustained 58mpg. So even a partial stripdown n clean can have dramatic improvements. For those who are afraid of the complete strupdown. Best 2 hours spent on the car.

I'm impressed with your level of detail on this job. Just did it up to the swirl flap not the manifold on my 13 Cayenne diesel and it was worse than yours at 85k. However, the entrance of the manifold looked great so I didn't go all the way like you did. Thanks for taking the time to mention the little nuances of the job. It's much appreciated I know I'll have to do it someday.

The best intake removal video by far. Now i know where the clip goes that i found deep in the valley for one of the fuel return hose. Have you thought about deleting that thing . You would probably make a great video as well. Maybe also a fuel pump failure prevention kit as well. Great work !

Hi Excellent job and video! Just a comment, on my 7L touareg, excess of consumption and 2 symptoms, when downhills, temperature downs a bit and smells of fumes inside the car. May be is some leaks in the intake and egr sealing? Thanks 😅

I did the same job but I damaged the rail fuel sensor . I replaced the sensor and now doesn’t start the engine . I double check all connectors and everything looks good and no errors on VCDS. Also plugged a charged battery and crank but no start. I completely removed the rail fuel pressure sensor connector and the engine started from the first key. Faulty sensor. 😊

I can't thank you enough for this video and the amount of detail. I have a coolant leak that I need to fix and had no idea how to properly remove this and will clean all when I take it off thanks to you. What brand gaskets did you use? What would you say was the best thing for cleaning the intake?

Hi Elvin. Thanks for your nice comments. I got the gaskets from Rock Auto. I can’t recall the name of the cleaner that was the best. I tried three kinds. I’ll find the jug of cleaner and get you the details.

Interesting video and thank you. My 2015 Cayenne had a coolant leak at 95,000 miles … i paid the dealer to repair … they also had to remove the oil cooler and replace the coolant valve … crazy process … now im wondering if the dealer took time to clean the intake … the engine does seem to have less lag and better throttle response so perhaps they did … thanks again for sharing the process

I cleared the throttle body then used a long brush and a shop vacuum to clean the manifold instead of removing it.mostof the buildup is in the 2 throttle bodies.

I'm just researching how to do this job on my 7l Touareg. Not sure if you've encouraged me or put me off! But, why did you stop where you did? I thought the main EGR valve is between the inlet manifold and turbo, and is one of the main items to fail because of carbon build up. Likewise, is it worth swapping the glow plugs whilst they are exposed?
@garysgarage2118

Hi. The main problem happens with the exhaust gas mixes with the intake air. Upstream did not look bad. Was my first time doing this job. The smoothness returned after this cleaning was done.

I’ve been putting this repair off for a long time I was thinking about drilling a small hole on the top of the intake in the center just enough to spray the cleaner in it while it’s running.

Most of the soot was around the EGR, so to make it easy just clean there and the throttle plates. If you watch the video, you will see the back of the valves were fairly clean. Also, spray does not fully clean.

You put a lot of work in this and the video, thanks. I have cleaned intakes a lot and made them shiny, but TBH that's usually only an optical thing. Where the pipes are wide and big is not where the soot causes loss of power, at least not a great deal. Valves that don't open or close fully is where it happens, because imagine after combustion some of the expanding exhaust gas is lost back into the intake or into the exhaust stream, it can't push the piston down with its full force. An intake pipe or throttle valve that has a bit of soot doesn't dramatically reduce the air flow. If that was the case, then these parts would be as big as technically possible

Perhaps I missed it….did you have to do anything to relieve fuel pressure from the rails? Also, any type of prime procedure to refill the rails once complete?
@garysgarage2118
@garysgarage2118 4 ай бұрын
Just open one line slowly and catch any fuel with a rag. Because the high pressure pump is mechanical all you can do is crank the engine to build pressure. Thanks for your question and comments

Damn, I was really hoping to see the inside of that intake after you removed it and before you cleaned it. Was wondering if it was as caked with soot as the valve was? Or was it not as bad and could have possibly have been skipped? Like, would it be ok to just clean the valve out more frequently, instead of taking the whole things apart and removing the crazy intake manifold? Or, would that just cause the intake manifold to mung up with soot more and more, and only effect the valve? Sorry for the goofy questions... I realize you may as well do it properly, but this is very intimidating!
@garysgarage2118

The intake was not as bad as I expected. If I knew it was okay I would not have pulled it and just cleaned the swirl valve, egr and the first few inches of the intake. Would have been a much quicker job with similar results.

Hi, where did you pry the intake from to get it loose?
@garysgarage2118
@garysgarage2118 Жыл бұрын
You need to be very careful with plastic intakes. Try not to pry and if you need to use a big surface not an edge. If you get it all loose it will just come off as there are no adhesives involved

@Gary's Garage thanks I ended up using a crowbar/leaver and just pryed it ever so slowly against the egr cooler, it was surprisingly stuck to the surface as the seals must've been frozen of some sort over time given I haven't driven the car in 2 months

Why isn't there a filter/collector type thing between the exhaust and the EGR? That is a ridiculous pain in the ass to clean, and is obviously going to be a problem since the exhaust is fed back into the intake... No wonder people delete or bypass the EGR on these things, WOW...
@emmanuelgermain769
@emmanuelgermain769 7 ай бұрын
You can bypass the EGR but I would only recommend this somewhere with hot weather. I live in Canada in a region where it gets to -40C often in winter and I wouldn't recommend not having the EGR. Malone tuning (Tunezilla) has a modification that I have on my stage 2 tune called dynamic EGR where the EGR will be turned on until the engine hits 75C and then it is closed. You get the benefits of the EGR helping to heat the engine up and then turns off to prevent the excess soot.
