All great tips Ben. Thanks. I’ve taken some pretty serious headers while wading. Best move was going to a wading staff ($3 at a garage sale). The third point of contact really helps.

You forgot an important rule. Never let your upstream foot go in in front of you downstream foot while walking perpendicular to the current. If you do your legs can get twisted and you will eat it (I have a few videos of me doing that). Another great video!

Don’t underestimate felt soles; I use boots with interchangeable soles as i tend to fish more small/medium streams where slime rocks are more a thing

Amen, I am a felt convert. Nothing against my rubber sole boots, but they are no go on algae covered rocks. The felt on the Simms G4 Pro wading boots are really nice. Add some studs and it is the perfect combo.

Wading staff are paramount. Been using them for over 40 years. Heavy duty wading staffs designed for the purpose, that can support your weight and don't bend. NOT ski poles! Also cleated boots. LOVE them, on all types of rocks in all water conditions (including algae and ice). Not for carpets or wood floors. IN addition to wading belt, I use a weight lifters waist belt inside the waders to support the back, which helps protect it from those jerky, goops, almost fell, movements. Been doing that for 40+ years too. Finally, "up-water?" Hell no! Downstream, upstream. til I die.

I’m pretty stable in the water. The day before my daughter was married, I was sent fishing. The only demand was to not get hurt. Great day, at the end I stepped on a silt covered rock that started the fall. Tried to get to the bank and almost made it. Took a very hard fall onto a cone head rock. Broke two ribs. Wife not impressed. Always use a staff. Always be very careful on slick rocks. No matter how good a wader you are, pride goeth before the fall.

I fell midriver up on the Gallatin last year and shattered my kneecap + femur. I had to reset my kneecap and walk about a mile back to the road where I had to hitchhike to the hospital. Meanwhile it was dumping snow and my body was numb from river water. Lesson learned: Always use a walking stick on slick rivers. Also worth mentioning- I’m 25 and healthy. It can happen to anyone

I fish small streams in the East. They are nothing like those big rivers--but just as dangerous. There is usually nowhere to wade safely. I actually severely damaged my big toe getting wrenched under a rock. It is permanentely messed up. Fishing is more dangersou than ice hockey. Ask me how I know.

The scariest wading experience I had early on was my first encounter with “this is too much…” current. I was by myself, wading up to my waist and the water was deceptively fast due to a lack of obstacles. When I stepped into the main current, it was an immediate struggle, the bottom was rocky, I didn’t dare try to turn around because maneuvering was *ridiculously* perilous. Lucky for me, it was a narrow stream, the other side was about ten feet away and I managed to make it over there. Lesson learned and applied…watch the water like a hawk and do NOT fuck with current. It takes a grand total of three seconds to go from comfortable to a complete loss of control.

I was in the same exact predicament once. Narrow stream, water, up to my hips and a strong current. I was fairly new to wading at the time. If I would’ve turned, the water would’ve taken me. If I would’ve taken a step, the water would’ve taken me. The only option I had was to take a big giant leap to grab a heavy branch that was hanging over the edge of the stream. I threw my rod and fly vest up on the bank, took that leap and pulled myself out. If that limb wasn’t there, I could’ve been in a lot of trouble! After that day, I’ve been much more careful when wading. If I am unsure about it… Then I just won’t wade in it.

Good video, guy in WI was wading a stream, got to muddy area. Got stuck, started sinking all the way up to chest. He was able to call 911 and was rescued. I fish a lot in WI. Many streams have rock bottom. But you also find areas on those streams where there is mud. I got caught in that to. Was able to get out but the feeling of sinking and have difficulty pull boot out is not fun. Now I avoid the muddy areas and look for rocky firm bottom for wading or crossing. I also like not having to wade or cross if I can help it.

Excellent! Safety is number one. Think before you wade. Also keep your eyes open. I might add if wading saltwater always wear a lifejacket and carry a wading staff. Poke and probe before you step. Shuffle your feet as you move. You can't see stingrays and an encounter can really wreck your day. In saltwater also keep your eyes open for sharks and naver wade muddy water, especially after a rain or at night.

Im here because I nearly died the other day fly fishing. I am new to wading and fly fishing in general. Apparently there was a dam up river that releases water daily and I did not know this. I was caught in the rushing water and nearly drowned. It was a terrifying experience and I will do more research before heading out anywhere again

I fell yesterday. DIdn't see a boulder infront of me and both feet caught it and I went head first over it into a deep hole. It was the first day I had a PFD on though so that was nice. No dying today, not on my watch. An old timer told me I should shuffle my feet in the river, but I don't think he realizes what it's like to shuffle over bowling balls. I thought I was all good till this morning, then realized I can't put weight on my knee. How I didn't notice that while I was fishing is beyond me. She's cooked Jim.

My two cents; make sure you're up on your boy scout skills. On more than one occasion falling in the river and being carried off by the current was a good excuse to swim to shore to get a good fire going and get buck naked while my things dried out. After a good backpack beer break you carry on with business instead of a sorry sloggy march back to the car in defeat.
