It's the first episode of 2017! We're on site today looking at a complex slab before the concrete is poured. This particular site requires drop edge beams to accommodate for the slope that runs from one corner to the other across the site.

Thanks for this video on Drop Edge Beams. We will be having them on our build and didn't really understand how they were formed. We knew there was formwork on the outside, but couldn't figure out how the actual edge beam was formed. In your video we can clearly see there is a gap all the way around the perimeter between the waffle pods and the formwork, which is where the concrete is poured to form the edge beam. All makes sense now :)

Thank you for the kind words, Gloria. Just a little heads up Mondays Episode of Simone Tv is about how drop edge beams are calculated and you will get to see them after the concert is finished.

I guess there are concrete piers under this? Does the plastic just go over the top of the piers so the slab ends up separated from the slab by the membrane?

It's great but only thing I can see wrong here is which is law by the AS2870 land must be sloped away from the footing and as you can see the pods are hollow thus creating a path under the waffle for rats and other animals. Most importantly no drainage installed around the the footing can be swale drains or other form of drainage to drain water away from your footing, the land on this site is very flat I assume the land flow is back to front which means the surface water will flow into the under ground plumbing trenches creating long term problems down the track. I apologise for bringing this up, but because water and waffle work against each other making water the worse enemy for your waffle pod slab. Sorry everyone but water is a big problem with water, I have a waffle slab heave and snapped in half.

Great video thanks! Two Q's if you have a spare minute please... 1:For the drop edge beams can you do a single pour without the concrete overflowing at the base (eg 2:48 mins in vid) or does the pour need to happen in two stages? 2: Do the bracing stakes for the internal drop edge beams pierce through the vapour barrier?

Hi Mat and thank for your comment. This is done with one pour and as the concrete is thick enough for it to hold itself it dont not overflow like you may think it would, with the stakes sometimes the barrier may be penetrated.

Ive noticed that waffle pods are allways used now in house slabs when did this technique start and what are the advantages of them and do they degrade with time

Hi Troy, I'm not too sure when this technique became popular. It's quicker and more cost effective.

Waffle Pods are able to reduce intensive labour trenching as they are installed on-ground instead of in-ground. Installation occurs on cleared level surfaces which means wet weather won't be an issue and each waffle pod slab provides tremendous strength as well as durability whilst also reducing construction costs
