Quite independently of Bill Hickock's 1876 'dead man's hand' (whose composition has been disputed and may or may not have contained aces), the Ace of Spades has been a symbol of death for more than two centuries.

ace's and eights. You are correct but, I believe it originated from a famous old western hero. Wild Bill Hickock was a famous frontiersman and gun shooter. He was gambling when a young gunman wanting fame, shot him in the back while he was playing poker. The Hand......full house, Aces' And Eights. circa 1876
