Everyone was getting into this speaker design in the '80's. Hitachi was well known for their 3D Super Woofer boomboxes. I had one as a kid, with the included surround speakers that mounted to the sides.

The LED's are not as nice or dynamic as in something like a Vela Discolite, where they used incandescent bulbs. Also as far as I know, LED's add distortion and some other nasty stuff to the sound if they don't have some proper componentry, or being driven with their own signal and not being connected to same signal source as the speakers.

you have to understand that these were competing against some really cheap wedges, and pods. this type of speaker solution was very big in the 80s, as most cars and trucks back then had little to no speaker locations. this type of solution allowed you to have so many options! for example my little ford/mazda truck had only some 3 inch dash speakers..thats it!(and you had to go THROUGH the dash from underneath to get at them) being able to use something like this was game changing! also there were little wedge shaped things that could hold 4 to 6 inch speakers. you could mount them in the kicks, behind seat, on the roof, but sadly they were'nt very good. there were some really nice ones from Pioneer, some had square speakers! alpine and kenwood had some nice ones as well. ALL were very pricey. then you had Roadmaster, Jenson, and others that were cheap, ER but didnt sound very good.

My 91 Toyota Pickup I had in high school only had two 4" speakers in it and you had to completely remove the lower dash panels where the glove box was to get to them. I replaced the original speakers since they were blown with some cheapy blue coned Pioneers I got from Wal-Mart. I don't remember what the model was but I remember the cones had creases in them going outward like sun rays and the shroud for the tweeter always reminded me of an arrow-head. They sounded great for what they were but the tweeter needed taming. I remember having to turn down some songs since the tweeters would hurt my ears. :)

I remember these, i was always so interested in the green center dome of the speakers, they just looked so neat, even if the light in them didn't work (i actually preferred them with no light, just really liked the green center dome). With the advent of 3D printing you could probably just print another box for them seeing how the plastics of these old boxes are pushing up there in age and getting brittle.

I had a set of these. I put them in my "boombox" and put some chritmas string lights in them because they were brighter. The holes in the grill would light up my room with dots. Thanks for reviewing these, now I know who made them. I was always curious as my neighbor gave me them, but out of the original housings. I specifically remember the green cones.

Oh my gosh I think I FINALLY Found what my dad had. These were fairly loud from what I remember. When I was 7 that was in 1990 he picked em up at a flea market. But he was running them on a home stereo system. On top of the entertainment center. Thanks for posting this video it was driving me insane that I didn’t know what they were.

I remember seeing that packaging during the late 80s also. Being poor and wanting a aftermarket stereo upgrade that was your first choice other than Kmart/Western Autos Sparkomatics (loved their 6X9s tho). Growing up in the Columbia, SC area Norton Stereo (original Two Notch rd location) carried Pyramid for the “budget minded” audiophile, I think I purchased one small pyramid amp and cassettes deck to go in my 1977 Cutlass S. The cassette deck was ok and pretty clear but the amp was horrible 😂. I didn’t find out about the flea market on US 1 until the early 90s.

I am quite impressed. The two supertweeters (often piezo do nothings at best) are real horn loaded dynamic drivers. Piezo units would not use a capacitor either. Hat's off to Pyramid for 5 real dynamic drivers as advertised! :)

I kinda miss the old days of half din accessories. Aka amps, eq's processors etc. I actually have some Pcb's I designed that fit on the top of 3in and 4in poll piece. They have an inductive coil with a rectifier into a 10 stage ziner based crowbar with 1uf caps and a ring of smd leds for a ring style vu meter that hide under the dust cap epoxy to the poll and lives off the back emf from the coil. As setup, it starts around 300w and peeks around 6kW when stuck to the top of a my old recone SP4 15

I'm betting the tweeters are dynamic and not piezo. They have iron backs which means there's a magnet and there appears to be a capacitor for high pass filtering. Piezos don't need those.

I'm curious. How do you guys handle old and dried out ferrofluid?
@YRR_J
@YRR_J 8 ай бұрын
If a tweeter can be dismantled easily, you have to carefully lift the assembly out of the magnet. Using heat is advised if the fluid holds the voice coil. Then one has to clean the whole assembly with care. After cleaning a proper ferrofluid meant for tweeters or midranges with the right viscosity and particle size is added. I don't have the specifics on how to properly add it, but the amount needed is very little. EDIT: I wouldn't buy ferrofluid from other than speaker repair shops. Basic amazon stuff is more likely meant for just demonstrations and basic science stuff and not for a speaker, as the particle size may be way too big.
