Education is a big deal in the Philippines. Parents really work so hard to put their children to school. So songs like MaPa is perfect for this. We celebrate graduation not just for us making it, but also for our parents. Seeing their children graduate is a major milestone for families!

Every school has a music teacher directing the graduating students. My elementary graduation song was "Somewhere over the Rainbow". It was a choir. We were divided into 4 groups (soprano, alto, tenor, bass). We learned our different tunes/voices separately before we sing as a group. The good singers are encouraged to sing loudly. I guess to compensate for the out of tune ones, lol.

Same here, and I'm 36 y.o. already. I thought every school all around the world do this every graduation. I also realize every month there was a program or event for the students to participate in singing or jingle or dancing or cheerleading. Hehe I didn't realize all year I was surrounded by music like every day. Hehehe

Our mother is a retired elementary school teacher and she's really laughing remembering how they practiced their graduation song but it was like the Alma Mater Song of La Consolacion she's àlways talking. There's just a few number of students going to a private Catholic school before so imagine the pressure and the stress if you can't sing. She said the technique was just to open your mouth and sing without voice hahahaha. My sisters and I graduated in the same high school and we still sang the same.Alma Mater. But each of us has different graduation song of course.

Graduation songs are so meaningful for Filipino students especially for high school (in my opinion) for some reasons - It's the only thank you gift that we can afford for our parents and guardians - Appreciation for our teachers - And motivation for our classmates, because not everyone can afford to go to college or universities, we will choose different courses ( some sticks together though). So it's kind of motivational song and goodbye song to our high school friends and classmates. I still remember everyone crying. High school life is the best.

Not only graduation songs. We have end-of-school recognition ceremonies where they give medals and recognition certificates to the kids with remarkable grades...and back when I was a kid, we had to sing in every one of them, so that's every end of school year. The first time I learned and sang "WARRIOR IS A CHILD" and "GO THE DISTANCE" (the Regine Velasquez version, mind you) was when I was around 8-10 years old. Yes, it was one of the songs we KIDS had to sing during recognition day.

This is heartwarming. Yeah, a graduation ceremony, be it in Kindergarten, 6th grade or high school, is incomplete without the graduation song. Nowadays, a little choreography and a sprinkle of voice harmony are added to it. Our HS graduation song was "Through the Years" by Kenny Rogers and we ALWAYS sing it during our annual class reunion. Never fails to put a smile on our faces whenever we hear that song. 😊

I remember when I was graduating back in the Philippines, I currently live in Cali, my high school teacher will go one by one to all her student and listen to their voices then identify if one is alto, Suprano and so on. I was soprano. She group each of us base on our levels. Then we will vote which song to sing on graduation and Christmas event. In Christmas event a lot of parents will come attend the event and listen to us. The music teacher is the conductor in the middle. In our practice, the teacher will literally stay close to you if you sound out of tune and it was so embarrassing as she will literally tell you and a lot of kids are looking at you. She also arrange the song. I thought it was pretty normal back then. I am 100% for sure, we are better sounding than that on the video since we sound like the lesser version of The Madrigal singers. And oh, this was in a private Christian school in Bagiou City.

She said "kung ako ang masusunod walang makapasa sa inyo" imagine its only in our batch that the parish priest is singing along with us during the mass. Hahahaha

SB 19s MaPa is a song dedicated to parents who worked so hard to raise the family including their children's education. Telling the parents to take a rest, mum dad your old and tired. it's my turn to work for you, like you've done so much for me. Filipino values this so much as it's a challenge for most Filipinos to finish their education because of different circumstances. Good job graduates! Soar high!

In some exclusive schools, they have regular convocations where a specific batch is asked to sponsor a presentation. This is in addition to the annual foundation day presentation where all batches from primary to HS prepares one that opens a week long fair of intramural games, rides and booths. From Kindergarten to 4th year HS, this was how it was. Then the JS proms and finally the graduation itself. Happy days!!!!

Thank you for appreciating our school graduation culture here in the Philippines, Efra and Waleska. You know, it is usually a School's and/or Teacher's requirement that everyone joins the Presentation weather you like it or not. Hehehehehe. In my Grade School graduation before, we sang "Wind beneath my wings" as a tribute for our Parents' sacrifices and efforts for us. Then in our High School Graduation before, we sang "If we hold on together". Then we were all really emotional and teary eyes for our last days as classmates before moving to our own chosen careers and schools for College. The school really intends such presentations like this for students, parents, and even guests to appreciate and honor the school as well. These were our memorable moments/days in our school life as students.

All graduation songs are so memorable for the batch! I remember we have to practice for weeks just to practice that song. Our music teacher will teach us those harmonies, like I remember in elementary/grade school, our voices are assessed if we are soprano, tenor, etc. Then we are in one room each rehearsal. It's fun cuz even those who can't sing SHOULD sing and there is nothing wrong if you can't because we practice, practice, practice. It's a bond among schoolmates even tho you don't meet them personally, you'll laugh with them when voice became out of tune during rehearsals HAHAHAHA

I still get emotional thinking about my elementary graduation (i didnt attend my jhs one). We sang reach for the sky by sarah geronimo, it was high as fuck but we managed lol and in the end most of the people in my area cried. Next year i'll have my senior high graduation i guess i need to prepare my eyes till then hahahahahaha

We didn't do a high school prom because it was during the martial law and had a military ball instead. Our graduation was very simple and we were the very first batch to wear our uniforms during graduation and we had Top of the World by the Carpenters as our graduation song. We never forget to sing this during reunions.

I graduated hs in 1996 and we sang "farewell to you my friend" this is a tradition from forever here I the Phils....I'm sure even our boomers used to do this. Singing is huge here, it's how we bond. I remember when mobile phones weren't even invented yet, there will always be a guitar nearby and everyone would just gather around and sing

Graduation day in the Philippines is very exciting for being a graduate receiving the diploma and emotional at the same time because finally the hardships of the parents for the child to finish school is finally over and a success being the dream realized. Thats why every students want to graduate so they can already stand on thier own to enjoy life with the family who supported them all the way. Congrats Graduates.

Usually graduation songs are done on sixth grade, fourth year of secondary school and senior year... and it's mostly to thank the faculty and tribute to parents. Oh and btw... back in my highschool years musical was pretty common actually... almost every school event there is musical competitions it's as if a must already.

Group singing is a part of graduation ceremony in the Philippines. It makes graduation memorable , funny but sad because they are moving to another grade level and some expect that they might get separated or not see some of their classmates anymore. Others transfer to other schools or may be assigned to other sections. This also serves as a tribute to the school and their teachers in bidding goodbye. After the graduation song you can see that graduates are smiling but crying, hugging each other. This day really is very emotional but so special.

For our high school graduation, we had a songwriting contest. We performed the winning piece during the ceremony, written and composed by students.

Actually they dedicate that song for the parents, as a token of appreciation for doing thier all and sacrifice s just to send you to school, ... And during that special moment the vibe is sooo emotional...for the parents , students and also the teachers. 😅

graduation, recognition, moving up day, etc, singing is always part of the program. The songs are not just random, they are always meaningful , dedicated to or to give honor (classmates, teachers, parents, encouragements to oneself and more) MAPA is dedicated to parents

Maybe this is also a factor why Filipinos are known for being happy people, despite the poverty/being a developing country. I’m depressed right now, I probably don’t belong to that happiest people but you know, we celebrate small wins, milestones... and this reactions + comment section reminds me of those happy and good old days which is very nice!

Our highschool graduation song was composed just for us and for the event and there was harmonization and all the nine yards. At least for all major song performance even when we just celebrate mass, we harmonize. It's really a Filipino thing even back in the day. Graduated highschool in 2000.
