A walk in NYC in the Queens neighborhood of Far Rockaway. I exit an A train at Far Rockaway - Mott Avenue, and walk along Mott Avenue, Empire Avenue, Redfern Avenue, Beach 20th Street, and end at the Rockaway waterfront. I also briefly set foot in the neighboring areas of Lawrence and Inwood, Nassau County, Long Island.
From Wikipedia:
"Far Rockaway is a neighborhood on the Rockaway Peninsula in the New York City borough of Queens in the United States. It is the easternmost section of the Rockaways. The neighborhood extends from Beach 32nd Street east to the Nassau County line. The southern border is adjacent to Rockaway Beach and Boardwalk, which is located on the Atlantic Ocean.
Far Rockaway is located in Queens Community District 14 and its ZIP Code is 11691. It is patrolled by the New York City Police Department's 101st Precinct."

Just showed this video to my mother who grew up in Far Rockaway in the 50s and 60s. She lived in the Redfern Projects building 12-70 it has been a long time since she's seen the place so we loved that you worked through the projects. I was born at St. Joseph's, now St. John's, in 1971. We moved out to Long Island when I was 4 years old. My aunt lived on McBride St. for a few years after we left and I remember visiting her. This is the best video I've seen of Far Rockaway and great walk down memory lane for both my mother and I. Thanks!

THANK YOU. IT'S BEEN 72 YEARS SINCE I LAST WALKED THESE STREETS. THIS WAS A BLESSING AND A SADNESS FOR ME... Names from my time: Eric Kronstadt, Jay Berman, Michael (lived upstairs at 1215 Frisco Av) He could beat up Bobby D'Arpe, I could beat up Michael, and Bobby could beat me up. Then there was Barbra Beanstalk (a tall brilliant student), and Carol and her sister (Debby??)in the building next door who never stopped crying. And many blocks away was Susan the voice that tried to get to Broadway, and Susan Shapiro the one who tried to seduce me along with Carol and I was all of 10 years old while they were so much older at 13. And that gal (Karen?) who sat on the steps in front of 1215 Frisco and slowly raised her skirt as she counted out the stops as if on a slow moving escalator. And Ms.Abromowitz who paraded around one day in a vest that came down only to the top of her thighs on Beach 12th St. and back at Frisco Av. Michael's sister who cheated on her SAT's or so it was said and sat on my lap as I pretended to be alseep. She was gorgeous but 2 years younger than I, still only 11 at the time??. And then there was plump Evelyn and her female group one day doing a dance in a circle of 9 as they danced to make all the boys in the neighborhood come out and watch them. I stood behind a bush hoping they wouldn't see me for fear they might stop, but they didn't! And Elizabeth Koretsky , the most stunning woman I had ever seen to this day who taught Hebrew after School was let out at P.S.39. And then there were my regular teachers, one noted for carrying a bull whip to school. And then there was George a tallish student who I beat out for the History Award at PS 39 as a senior (Grades Kindergarten-6th grade), along with my being the fastest kid in school during the May Day races although a kid named Steven giving me a run for my money. Then there was this tall black guy who must have been left back a few years who towered over all of us. He would have won the May Day races except he slipped at the beginning and yet still managed to come in second!! Oh yes , Stewart something whose father owned a fur store in town, was the first to grow a mustache but it never caught on. He was exceptionally bright and we all felt let down that instead of going on in his education he decided to take over his father' business. Later, we (guys) all took the exam to get into Stuyvesant. I made it and went (no gals allowed at that time) and Eric K. made it but declined to go . I think he got the better of the deal, as he played trumpet in the school play and mixed it up with Far Rockaway High girls.. I lived 2 blocks from the beach if you walked down Bch 13th Street adjacent to Frisco Avenue. I still miss the salt air in my lungs on certain days and the cool summer breezes (before A/C was invented). But that 2 hour subway ride very soon after they extended the subway out to Far Rockaway sure took it out of me, needing to get there by 7:30 AM for attendence check in home room. The summer evening beach days included a beach club which cost money to get into and most of us could only go as guests of others since we were all pretty poor. The owner of the drink Crystal Orange lived in the rich part of FR and his son sometimes invited us. I can never forget one day a toddler was playing near the pool with no one watching him while I was in the pool itself and the life guard had his attention elsewhere. The toddler jumped in and then started to cry because of the fear this new experience brought him, having jumped in at the deep end. I was no big help and feared I would make matters worse if I tried to help, but after alerting the life guard, he calmly slipped into the water and lifted the baby up so he could breathe...I always felt the eyes of the people all around me, having not budged a muscle. I can feel it to this day. I since started to believe in myself and never let another experience like that pass me by. I guess you might call it overkill... Last but not least, in Junior High, which itself was a good 45 minute bus ride to Jr HS 198, we were treated to Susan's lead in The King and I which happened rather surreptitiously. The Director overheard Susan one day in the auditorium not auditioning (frankly I forget what was going on at the time he walked in) and the head of the English Department, Mr. Duffy, walks in one day and in that moment tells Susan she has the lead. RIghtfully so, absolutely. She could sing like an angel. And the rest is history, as I guess , so was this. My thanks again for triggering my memories before it's too late... This was fun for me. If any others who went to P 39 around 1951-1957 care to add, confirm, or deny...please jump in...

Man, I just saw your Bensonhurst video yesterday. I moved from that neighborhood to Far Rockaway (Beach 9th Street across from the school, you can see the precise location at the RHS of the screen @14:36) in 1963, and today I see THIS video. You stalking me? :) Thanks very much for bringing back really old memories. Two more things: First, though it was before my time, back in the early-to-mid 1900s Far Rockaway would not have been the last stop on the subway; I believe it continued onto what is now the LIRR Far Rockaway branch tracks. At some point (I guess when the LIRR was established) that part of the subway system was sold or transferred to the LIRR. Second, this neighborhood is famous as it's where Nobel Prize winner Richard Feynman (voted, I believe, the 7th greatest physicist of all time) grew up. Go figure!

I haven't been to Far Rockaway in well over 15 years; but, I do have friends and co-workers who live out there. Obviously, it has changed a lot because of Hurricane Sandy. Your walk looks very relaxing--and, walking is the best exercise. I couldn't really tell; but, has any work gone underway on the Far Rockaway shopping center since the owner of the property passed. I know that there are plans to build up housing and commerce to hopefully revitalize the area. It would be nice to see another Hospital there---all these residents and just one hospital to to service the peninsula AND the five towns?!? Absurd. The MTA is cutting the Q53 bus line under their new plan. The Rockaways need love and support. Hopefully, you enjoyed your walk on this brisk but sunny day. :)

Wait they're cutting the Q53 SBS to where? That line is mad useful and so many people use it
@MsNovemberry
@MsNovemberry 4 жыл бұрын
@@matthewhernandez8342that's what the MTA bus draft says. They say that the Q52/Q53 will become one bus route; but, the Q52 starts at Queens Center Mall; and, continues to its regular terminal at B54th street. If there is service from Elmhurst to the western end of the peninsula, I am not sure what route# they are giving it. I am so annoyed because I like taking the Q53 to Woodside to catch the 7 into Manhattan (so, I don't have to deal with 74th street/Jackson Heights). Also, under this new plan, the Q22 would begin at Burnside Avenue in Cedarhurst; and, terminate at 116th street. So, if you wanted to go to Jacob Riis Park, you would have to walk/drive/cab it there. But, with the MTA president having resigned, who knows what will become of the new plan. I think they should cut bus lines that are not as popular, while increasing bus service to the ones that are. And the Q53 is always packed!!! It would be a grave mistake to cut service on that line.

I only went out to Far Rockaway once in the four years I lived in New York, and that was to check out a popular beerhall, which probably isn't there anymore. On second thought, it could have been in Jamaica.

other than the beach the only thing popular in far rockaway is the morgue, which people only visit one time but a lot of people still end up at. Say the words "beerhall" in far rockaway lmaooo. that hipster stuff not being there is the only good thing about it.

I haven’t been to Far Rockaway in a long time. I wonder what they’re doing across from the Far Rockaway subway station. If they were smart, they would extend the trackage from Far Rockaway LIRR up to Mott Avenue, so people getting off the LIRR or subway don’t have to walk that quarter of a mile.
