A walk in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn. I exit the Franklin Avenue / Botanic Garden (2)(3)(4)(5)(S) Subway Station and travel along Franklin Avenue, Atlantic Avenue, Nostrand Avenue, Eastern Parkway, and New York Avenue.
From Wikipedia:
"Crown Heights is a neighborhood in the central portion of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. Crown Heights is bounded by Washington Avenue to the west, Atlantic Avenue to the north, Ralph Avenue to the east, and Clarkson Avenue/East New York Avenue to the south. It is about 1 mile (1.6 km) wide and 2 miles (3.2 km) long. Neighborhoods bordering Crown Heights include Prospect Heights to the west, Flatbush and Prospect Lefferts Gardens to the south, Brownsville to the east, and Bedford-Stuyvesant to the north.
The main thoroughfare through this neighborhood is Eastern Parkway, a tree-lined boulevard designed by Frederick Law Olmsted extending 2 miles (3.2 kilometres) east-west. Originally, the area was known as Crow Hill. It was a succession of hills running east and west from Utica Avenue to Washington Avenue, and south to Empire Boulevard and East New York Avenue. The name was changed when Crown Street was cut through in 1916.
The northern half of Crown Heights is part of Brooklyn Community District 8 and is patrolled by the 77th Precinct of the New York City Police Department (NYPD). The southern half is part of Brooklyn Community District 9 and is patrolled by the 71st Precinct of the NYPD. Crown Heights's primary ZIP Codes are 11213, 11216, 11233, 11238, and 11225. Politically, it is represented by the New York City Council's 35th, 36th, and 41st Districts."

It would be nice if you included more positive history of Crown Heights; i.e. famous residents, scientists, political leaders, architecture, civil rights history, innovators and inventors, THE WEST INDIAN LABOR DAY PARADE, and so much more...to start off the video talking about crime, racial tension, poverty, and gentrification does a disservice to people who don't really know the neighborhood. P.S. Crown Heights is a working class community, and to accommodate the residents, many businesses don't open until the afternoon, during school let-out/after-work hours, until 10/11 in the evening.

Phantastik I used to live on Pacific and Nostradamus too, went to visit a couple months back and couldn’t believe how much the place has changed. Back in the 80's and 90's that place was a crack infested war zone, still had a lot of fond memories nevertheless, but the place has changed dramatically.

Funny to watch this video because I grew up in Crown Heights (Rochester Avenue). Amazing how much it has changed with gentrification. When I lived there in the early 90’s I literally never saw a white person walking in the streets, only saw the Hasidic Jewish residents on occasion. In your clip there were white residents everywhere. :) Glad to see Crown Heights toured. Excellent job as always ActionKid, keep up the great job 👍🏾

The only part i'm familiar with in Crown Heights, is a sporadic visit to Gombo's Bakery on Kingston Ave off Eastern Parkway...they have excellent baked goods. AK What are you doing? I'm clutching my pearls. This is "old home" day for me! This was my formative years neighborhood! This neighborhood is ripe with culture I had my elementary,Junior high and high school in this area. I met Mrs. Pearce at the Brooklyn museum and the what I call the "gigantic marble Lady". My sister and I lived in the Brooklyn public library and the botanic Gardens, there used to be a bread factory at Empire blvd. and the smell of in the afternoon when returning from junior high school. There used to be something called the Muse" This area also used to also be called Crow Hill.maybe 8 years ago they put up those street flags calling it Crow Hill again. I worked as a candy striper around the corner from my building on Prospect Place in Brooklyn Jewish Hospital. We moved to Crown Heights from Bed-Stuy when the last poor whites were still there. People often make this mistake the conflict was between the somewhat newly arrived Haitian community, they started arriving in the mid 70's. The Jewish world headquarters is on Eastern Parkway and Throop Ave. The block between St Johns and Lincoln Place on Franklin Avenue was were I bought my first cigarette from a Caribbean store for 5 cents on my way to high school one morning. I thought to myself "He didn't say anything so I guess it must be alright" (stupid me). I had an Italian boyfriend from the pizza shop on Union st. down the block from my high school. On Sunday's after church my sister and I skated at the rink on Empire Blvd.with the Hasidic children, we were the only people there, the church going African Americans and the Hasidic children. Eastern Parkway was our oasis. we would go to the Cameo theater on Eastern Parkway You mentioned. We called that castle on Atlantic the Armory. dean Street is where Chris Rock and his family lived.Thank you AK a wonderful job as always and a personal delight for me.💖

I just dont understand how people afford rent in NY. I have been told that it is not uncommon to pay $1800.00 for a two bedroom in Brooklyn. That's crazy!! Paying $24000,00 a year for a two bedroom apt.... How the heck?

..and that seems already outdated - when I left my rent-controlled 2BR apt on Nostrand (& Sterling Pl) in 2016, the same 2BR under me was renting for $2400!! As the rents got higher the neighborhoods became more blant.. Generic Starbucks, banks and overpriced pretentious eateries replacing unique and flavorful joints. Newbies calling police on afternoon backyard BBQs which had their Reggae or such playing "too loud"..😒

I think the castle shaped building may have originally been a national guard armory way back in the day.

The castle was an old armory during world war 2. Then later turned to house the vets, then for homeless people and drug rehabilitation

not the same today though, I remember going through these streets in Brooklyn for the first time in 1986 & then frequently when I met my wife in 1995.....nobody is outside, no arguments, no cops out there responding to calls, no sirens within ear shot, no gang of kids ,teens & old people out & about.....just seems like any other place in the United states....social media, cellphones, high tech video games & loitering laws have changed America drastically since the 1990's & earlier.

"The 23rd Regiment Armory is a historic National Guard armory buildinglocated at 1322 Bedford Avenue between Atlantic Avenue and Pacific Street in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City. ... Currently, the building is usedas a men's homeless shelter under New York City's Department of Homeless Services"
