In this episode of my series “ Walks in Dorset”, I take a walk from Langton Matravers and explore Dancing Ledge - as well as some Dinosaur footprints! Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I park my car at the National Trust “Spyway” car park which is located to the South of the village of Langton Matravers (which in turn is about 2 miles West of Swanage on the Jurassic Coast).
My 4 mile circular walk begins with a wander along an old track called Priests Way and very soon I come across Keates Quarry where there are the remains of footprints made by Dinosaurs many millions of years.
I then head South to Seacombe Quarry on the coast before joining the South West Coast Path and heading East towards the disused quarry at Dancing Ledge. It is a magical place to explore and just watch the waves crashing against the rocks.
My homeward journey takes me up to a ridge that looks over an area known as Scratch Arse Bottom
(seriously!) and then back the Spyway car park.
I finish off my walk with a wander through Langton Matravers, visiting the church (inside & out), before reaching my final destination - the Kings Arms pub.

I think Im right unless it's Winspit further west, but at the first cove on left hand side of caves there are impressive sailing ships on walls just inside the entrance. Am guessing they would have been carved in by the quarrymen back int he day. Also at dancing ledge there is passage through a cave on the right hand side as yo face the sea. this emerges onto another ledge where there is a cave with another carving of sailing ships, but also some writing signed T E Lawrence. Its very weathered but there all the same. No idea if it is genuine. When younger I used to camp out in the shallower cave and listen to french radio whilst falling asleep. It's a beautifully evocative area that I like to return to from time to time - while I still can ! Those slopes are definitely getting longer and steeper..

Beautiful area. One can always count on some of the Dorset place names to give you a laugh! I shall be drifting off to sleep tonight thinking of those waves.

Yes, there are certainly some "rude" place names in Dorset. I have just finished doing some research for a walk next year at Bere Regis and the route passes through a hamlet to the West of the village called Shi ... tterton! (I have had to split the word in case I get the comment removed by the "powers that be!).

My local pub when staying down at Tom’s Field. I’ve done the walk across to Dancing Ledge from the campsite quite a few times. Beautiful scenery.

Wonderful walk and area, brings back memories of childhood visiting my granddad in Corfe Castle. Beautiful by the coast there, quite a climb back up, I would be huffing and puffing lol. Nice seeing Logan enjoying some blackberries :) I remember going to the ship inn way back. Thanks for sharing this lovely walk.

Another great video Dave, makes me quite nostalgic to be back there on the coast path, but owing to a back problem and sciatica, I fear that won't be any time soon. Probably the wrong time of year for puffins, I saw some there once on a birthday walk at the end of March, but I think they leave again as soon as breeding's over. You need to employ Logan's 4-wheel drive when going uphill, make him work for his crisps! I await your next episode.

Another great video, I know how important it is for you to get thumbs up's and subscribers, I'm surprised you've had a thousand views but only 109 thumbs up. Maybe you should make a bigger thing about it to encourage viewers to give you a thumbs up as you really do deserve them. Keep up the good work.

Fantastic work Mr Logan, and a clever plan to walk up from the ledge to Spyway, it is much harder on the knees the other way around. Will your mate Dave show us some frozen forest soon? Here's hoping, thank you both. 😀

Hello Dave. That was a very nice walk, full of interesting facts. I liked the out door bathing pool at Dancing Ledge. I assume the pool stays full when the tide goes out. That was quite a climb back up the hill. Nice church too, together with the stone statue of a stonemason. No wonder Logan was tired at the end.

Thanks Lionel. Yes, a fair uphill climb at the end but at least the last bit to the pub was slightly downhill!

This place made me question if I was actually human... On the hottest day of 2018, during the FIFA World Cup, I decided on a bike ride from Sandbanks to Dancing Ledge, and as I was leaving, my housemate gave me 6 bottles of beer as the fridge was packed for the world cup, and lucky he did as I was fully intending on buying water on the way to the chain ferry, but I forgot and got all the way to dancing ledge realising all I had for hydration on a 40 mile round cycle was 6 bottles of Budweiser Somehow I did the 40 miles in 35C+ summer heat with only beer for fluid and made it back in one piece... Had a hangover from the gods the next day 😂
