In this episode of my series “Walks in Wiltshire, I take a 5 mile circular walk (with a detour) from Great Wishford to Grovely Wood. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I parked my car in Great Wishford and after a quick look at the River Wylye (at Stoford Bridge to the East), I had a wander around the village. A visit to the church of St Giles (which has an 18th century fire engine inside!), I headed South passing by the old Almshouses, the school & the Royal Oak pub.
Before heading out into the countryside, I made a quick detour down Station Road to see Oak Apple Field. The village has an annual fete & celebration to commemorate the ancient rights of villagers to collect wood in the nearby forest. For more information, do view the KZfaq video at • VIDEO: A CENTURY OF SA...
I left the village, heading West , uphill, along a bridleway towards Ebsbury Copse and continued until I reached a ridge and a section of the Monarch's Way. At this point, I made a detour to the West along an old Roman Road to find & then explore a WW2 bunker!
Retracing my steps, I then headed East - still along the old Roman Road, past an ancient earthwork known as Grim's Ditch until I came across the three Witches' trees! There were originally 4 of these amazing beech trees (one has blown over) & the legend is that they have a connection with the murder of 4 sisters back in the 18th century (full details of the story in the video!).
My homeward leg took me along a bridleway back to the village.

Thanks for all your hard work in preparing your walks Dave. I’ve often wondered how many you had up your sleeve. The edited results are very professional and extremely watchable. This walk in particular was very varied in content. That Second World War bunker was remarkably well preserved. I think that such structures should be listed. Kind regards to you and Logan.

Thanks Mark. I think that must be one of the "cleanest" & best preserved WW2 bunkers / stores that I have come across.

Very nice that old church, and the woods also. A dream of mine to own a woodland in southern England to live and work in, a simple rustic life in a small cabin.

Hi Dave and Logan, thank you so much for covering this walk. It’s got some interesting history. The fire engine in St Giles Church is unique. Hopefully The Swan Inn @ Stoford was open.

You sure the Royal Oak wasn't open Dave, falling off a seat, whatever next? Christmas indulgences were causing a bit of puffing too I fancy. Never mind you'll soon get your walking fitness back with all those planned walks. Keep up the good work.

One of my favourite places to visit is Grovely Woods and the Witches Trees. There is another similar bunker a little further up the same stretch on the same side but more difficult to spot and it’s been bricked up. Shame about the pub, been in there a bunch of times before it suddenly closed . It said it was reopening in December 22 but never did at least when I visited it hadn’t . Logan’s face at the end when you slipped off the bench 😂

I would have loved to have carried on to the second bunker (I still had a fair bit of the walk to do) - I must go back there again.

4:08 Interesting that the bread seems to be priced by the gallon. Never seen that before. It would provide an incentive for unscrupulous bakers to make their bread extra spongy!

Hello Dave. As soon as you showed those bread prices etched into the wall, I remembered the church and the fire pump. Had to smile at Logan in the bunker! He may have gone in first, but he couldn’t get out fast enough. Never mind his poor old dad being left all alone. I'm sure he would have gone for help, should anything have happened to you

its where the shadow points to not the metal indicator on the sundial, the shadow is pointing south south east, but it is odd and the weird shadow shape suggests part of the metal indicator has broken off at some time and now reads between 4 and 5 o'clock, guess its broken
