I've been looking all over your channel for some information on how you can afford to stay in all of these "luxurious" (expensive) hotels. So far not a clue. Did you ever deal with this question in earliest shows/

A few years ago my friend who stayed at Savoy invited me to visit the hotel. I coughed when I was leaving the revolving door. Suddenly, a truly kind doorman, Genci, sent me a bottle of still and asked whether was I alright. That moment touched me because I wasn't even a guest there.

 I was there with my Aunt recently; & hv never not had impeccable service there. The Doormen are usually marvelous & my Aunt alternates between The Savoy, the Dorchester when she is Visiting (& another Hotel which shall remane nameless lest YT decides to go there) all of which offer a lot re Privacy & none of them are a slouch in the Courtesy or Privacy Departmen🙏🇬🇧

I worked at the Savoy back in 1991. When we were shown round the hotel on our induction course we went into a dining room, where during the second world war Sir Winston Churchill was having dinner with 12 guests. When they realised there were 13 people round the table they got a place laid for the hotel cat making the total number 14. There was a little statue of the cat in that room.

When I was seven years old, we stayed at the Savoy. They messed up on our reservations and the first night we stayed across the alley in a very old, abandoned hotel. The original Savoy? Straw mattress! We had sailed first class on the new SS United States. Do you know anything about the old hotel?

Someone may have said this already, but those chandeliers are Venetian (murano) blown glass. Maybe they did a plastic version but I would think not. In fact, "Pierre Yves Rochon used the finest materials from Murano glass chandeliers and silk wall coverings to Italian linens and marble floors." That type of glass looks surreal to me. Enjoy your videos.

The stairs in the 19th century was usually in rich homes. The staff was to use them. The hotel did not want the maids to be seen by guest. That was the back stairs.

Tim, The Savoy is a brilliant top notch hotel, we stayed there 6 nights in 2022 for my wife's birthday, we got a 3 nights for 2 offer and worked out about £4500 for 6 nights accom. plus we got free breakfast daily for the 3 of us too. The pastries that come with your breakfast are insane, just so good. We also enjoyed the atmosphere of The American Bar. Even when you check in, you get a glass of champagne in the waiting room as standard. The only thing that irks me, same with The Balmoral in Edinburgh, is the 5% additional (optional) room charge that supposedly goes to the maids. I'm thoroughly against this charge as everyone pays enough for the room itself that the hotel can afford to give them that extra 5% if they wish out of their own profits.
@hatchling88
@hatchling88 3 ай бұрын
Surcharges are a scourge on the hospitality business. It's just another way for businesses to increase prices without seeming to raise basic rates. Possibly they are meant to compensate for those who do not leave a tip for the housekeeping staff, but I don't think guests should be tipping those staff members who are just doing their jobs behind the scene... pay them a living wage and maybe increase the basic rates if necessary. That's just me, tipping and surcharges may be hard to get rid of as businesses like to play those games. Oh well
@edennis8578

@@hatchling88I agree. I worked in a hotel as a maid when I was in school. We were paid minimum wage, and the head housekeeper kept all of the tips for herself.

My husband and I got married last September (very low key) and immediately afterwards spent two nights at The Savoy. It's no exaggeration to say we had the time of our lives. They could not have been kinder or done more for us, the service was beyond exceptional. We are sending my parents there for their golden wedding this year and I'm sure we will be back. Memorable.

Excellent to see them using a Coravin to dispense your wine. It’s a wonderful device that allows you to take a single glass of wine from a bottle without uncorking it. As the wine is dispensed the Coravin infuses the bottle with argon which settles on the top of the wine to prevent oxidisation. Essentially you can take a glass of wine out of the bottle and then put it back to continue aging as normal.

@@stuartrowena4371 The Coravin is a relatively new invention and quite niche but it works extremely well. It has interchangeable needles so you can swap out the main one for a specialist vintage needle if you need to. I've been using a Coravin for a few years and I love how it allows me to enjoy an expensive bottle of wine over a year or more. The only caveat of course is that the bottle has to have a real cork so that it can naturally reseal after the Coravin needle is removed from the bottle. It's a cool gadget!
@stuartrowena4371
@stuartrowena4371 3 ай бұрын
Hi Jonathan, very interesting. Years ago my old Dad used to have a vacuum pump which removed the air from inside the bottle so keeping it fresher for longer. It sounds as if the Coravin is somewhat of an improvement on that however, particularly with the addition of the Argon gas. Happy dining.

We had a work meal here a couple of years ago, it was lovely! We sat in Gordon Ramsay's private room and had oysters and caviar. The toilets were the prettiest I've ever seen and the smell of the flowers everywhere was just lovely.

There is also a book called 'Kaspar' by Michael Morpurgo based on The Savoy cat 'Kaspar'. A great read for when he's slightly older, I remember too reading it as a child and then visiting one of the reception areas in The Savoy where a statue of the cat still stands.

The Savoy Hotel was off grid when I worked there in 1979. In its basement were its own power generators provided by The Strand electricity Power Company! Hence the reasons for its lack of sockets in the rooms.

Crikey - hefty prices! I could have a week away at my favourte 4* hotel in Crete plus flights for that - but you and Gaby deserve to try the best as you've had some pretty grotty stays too! The lack of sockets is a thing though - especially as you said the hotel was refurbished in 2007 and they shut the doors - they should have rewired. it was grand but I wouldn't want to stay there. But kudos to the staff for going out of their way to make Casper welcome - that is a really nice touch.

Pre pandemic and happier times for a while it was a yearly trip to The Savoy for Afternoon Tea for my parents and I. There were never any airs and graces from any of the staff, and customer service was always on point. One of the best top hotels in London in that aspect.

Tim, did you realise when you were swimming that you were directly above the Savoy Theatre when the theatre burnt down in the 1990s when they rebuilt it was installed there and has not been moved if a fire? started in the theatre the bottom of the pool came crashing down in the theatre and would help to put the fire out. Regarding the Broderick or other celebrities appearing at the theatre, it's normal that they will stay in private residences or if they really want Savoy apartments can be used but it very rarely happens.

@@WalkWithMeTim And a lighting circuit is designed so that by turning a single switch, usually by the door, you can switch all the table lamps and floor lamps on and off without having to go to each individual lamp. If you are ever doing a new build or major renovation I would highly recommend them - very classy.

@@gdok6088they’re useful for turning all lights on, however I wouldn’t personally want them because for every one you’d need a normal plug socket too. It would do my head in to not have a proper socket whenever I saw one.

The Savoy service levels reminds me of a small French hotel I stayed in with my parents when I was a teenager, many years ago. We were moving to France [Dad's job] and we were to stay in this lovely older hotel for a several weeks while our long term rental was being readied for us. The staff were so incredibly hospitable to us, doing small favors, making sure we felt welcome, caring about our comfort. I remember our stay at Hotel L’Aigle Noir in Fontainebleau to this day, maybe a hundred hotels later, because of the thoughtful staff.

If I had to choose between the Savoy or the Ritz, definitely favour the Savoy. The Savoy felt like it was more classier but not too snobby if you get what I mean Tim. Personally I thought the dinner looked a bit naff especially with how much it cost but the breakfast was the star of the show, looked top notch!! 👌🏻I would definitely pay £45 for that breakfast if it wasn’t included with the room. Another fantastic produced video Tim

I stayed a week at the Savoy more than 40 years ago when it still had this old world charm. The waiting staff wore different suits depending on the time of the day i.e. morning suit at breakfast etc. Strangely enough the decor of the room is just as how I remembered it.

I, too, stayed at the Savoy for a month, 45 years ago. As a young college graduate of 20, I was overwhelmed. It was the nicest hotel I have ever stayed in, and I enjoyed it so much. I think of the "old" Savoy with fond memories. I must say I prefer it pre-renovations, though; more like the Savoy of old. By the way, our suite cost 25 pounds per night.

At this point, with the popularity of your channel, I have to wonder if the hotels know who you are and are making extra efforts to keep you happy. For the Savoy, I recently watched a doc on it and I believe that they do go the extra distance to satisfy your requests. I'm curious, what was Caspers Prize for completing the tasks?

The meal wouldn't have filled us up, but it looked lovely was really jealous. You know its going to be expensive, the room price i didn't think that was bad. The food looked to good to eat. Thanks for this video. Must've missed the Ritz hotel, just off to watch that👍

When I was a Telegram Boy in Liverpool over 55 years ago some of the older office blocks had 'Ascending Rooms' with seats for the passengers. One was a manual mechanism - ie counterweight operated by the lift attendant. The faster modern - ie post WW2 -lifts' had a seat for the Lift Attendant - yes someone who pushed the buttons for you!.

@@autiethoughties6898 you're correct, it's not an expense they can't afford but the attention to detail when making things like that more custom is partly what you're paying for. It creates a memory and a keepsake for the child. Something like that would've made my day as a child.
