Claridge's in London's Mayfair is the epitome of timeless elegance and one of the best 5-star luxury hotels in the world. Is it worth the price tag to stay here? some rooms are between £10k & £ 15k a Night!!!

Claridge’s is not an ordinary hotel. It caters to the very affluent. When it comes to providing high-end hospitality, the staff is expected to be professional rather than friendly. Therefore, they maintain politeness without trying to ingratiate themselves by being overly accommodating.

Claridge's standards are superb. I've been going there since I was a child, with my parents, in the sixties. The style of course, has changed immensely. It's much shinier and staff uniforms are very different. Evening waiters in the lounge used to wear velvet tailcoat and breeches with buckled shoes. There were no bars. The main bar was a less formal restaurant called Causerie, which offered a Scandinavian smorgasbord. What has changed is the guests and the noise level. It's much louder. I gave lunch to a friend in the Foyer and it was difficult to hear each other.

@@michaelmontagu3979 We were sitting under the chandelier in the Foyer in the evening. The jazz duo was playing. Very elegant. Out of the side room- the glass door opened. Oliver Stone came out. Went to the front desk to complain about the band while he was trying to have a meeting. The front desk told him that, “Music in the Foyer was a Claridge’s tradition for more than 100 years”. They were NOT going to make them stop. But would be happy to relocate his meeting to a more private place. If you want quiet- Claridge’s will find it for you. If the Foyer is busy and you need a quiet place- ask for a table in the back away from the noise of the main hall.
@michaelmontagu3979
@michaelmontagu3979 Ай бұрын
@2g3c4675 I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Claridge's is really the last of the old style grand hotels. The music has always been popular. It used to be the Hungarian Quartet, who had a total age of something like 280 years. They produced their own record. The old managers set the tone and stayed for years. Lund Hansen was there for 40 years and Ronnie Jones, last of the great managers, was there for 10 years. Now it seems to be something of a stepping stone. That chandelier was apparently £1 million. I just dread it collapsing because each piece is hooked onto another. One crack and.....disaster. It's the people who really make it different. In the past it was more like a club and strangers were often turned away. Obviously times have changed but that's how it used to be. People were quieter then, in general, and no one wanted to raise their voice. That's what I meant by its being noisier. It's also much busier, which is good for the hotel. More than once I was sitting in say the Reading Room at about 11 pm and the place was practically empty. My late wife and I were in the bar one evening, about 15 years ago, after a concert at Wigmore Hall. Very busy as it's a good bar. But then people started sitting on the arms of our chairs and shouting over our heads at each other. I know alcohol releases inhibitions, but it's that sort of casual discourtesy that has to some extent changed Claridge's. Physically it's a grand hotel, but with a largely Hilton clientèle.

That cloth on the back of the headboard is an antimacassar which people put on the back of anywhere people’s heads rest. It goes back to the days when men used to grease their hair, saves the furniture from being stained. My dear late Mummy had them on the back of all the chairs at home. We had doilies on all serving plates, coasters in saucers and lace tablecloths on all tables too. My parents, especially Mummy, certainly knew the best, even though we lived in a council house! ☺️

The 1925 style of the hotel is called 'Art Déco'. Art Déco was the name of the 1925 Art Décoratifs Show in Paris. It was inspired by the then-upcoming luxury cruisers and the hotel's colours also reflect that era: beige, black, white. Many things resemble the 'cruiser' style, up to the majestic bed.

@@bluecollarlit Cruiser refers to transatlantic cruise ships like the Queen Mary and the Normandie. One example of copycat inspiration is the round portholes, which are still in use today on ships. There's something about art deco that is so 'thoroughly modern ' yet bespoke quality at the same time. My preferences for interior design is warm contemporary- so that's natural materials- wood, stone and perhaps wrought iron blended with uplighting, rugs and spot lights. HOWEVER, if I was starting all over again, I would definitely consider quality art deco as a design choice having seen Claridges. What a thoroughly BEAUTIFUL hotel this is. Once again, thanks Tim. Really enjoyed your vid. Best wishes, Stu.

I can understand what he means when he says he sees hospital or cheap cruise ship vibes in it, but that's the fault of cheap copies of cheap copies of what was high-end style in the 1920s or 30s echoing down through the 60s to the 80s. I do have to applaud Claridge's for sticking to the style of what I'm sure was a dramatic modernist renovation 100 years ago but is now a quite unique version of historicism. I doubt a lot of that hallway furniture is original, I'm sure they've been collecting and maintaining appropriate antiques at great expense, and the resulting character that varies at every turn is outstanding. The hotel absolutely oozes class in a way that very few 21st century hotels seem to understand.

Dear Tim, I have enjoyed a few of your Luxury hotel videos, but notice you often describe mirrors as being dirty. May I kindly point out that the mirrors are most often antique and the mirrors are therefore slightly cloudy due very often to the silver backing deteriorating over many years giving a slightly cloudy and sometimes speckled appearance. In actual fact many people will ask for a ‘faux’ antiqued appearance to a mirror. I bought a huge Venetian mirror for a bathroom and it was a feature I loved. Best wishes ❤

I was very impressed watching you film inside Claridges Hotel. It was pristine, not a speck of dust or fingerprints, nothing out of place, immaculate hotel and soooo beautifully decorated. This should be 7 stars. Btw, your wife is a beautiful woman. In her short black dinner outfit, gorgeous legs in those high heels, lovely. You have an adorable child too. You're a lucky man Tim! I'm hooked on your show lots of fun. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

No I don't get a cruise ship or a hospital vibe from the bed. To me it just looks very comfortable. Of course sleeping will not be your number one activity while you're there. Correct? This is one of the most beautiful hotels I've ever seen in my life. I love seeing the things that they give to Kasper! Your child is so beautiful. You two are certainly very lucky.

This hotel is stunning 😍. I love art deco and it all looked clean and well maintained. I was surprised by the amount of nuts in the room though. Probably not the place to stay if you have a nut allergy. Also Tim, if you don't mind me saying, I wouldn't say jeans, t shirt and trainers are considered smart casual dress especially in a posh place like Claridges.
