This is such a sick piece! When I drew my jewelry armoire the first time I initially wanted the cabinet to be dovetailed. Now I really want to! And I experience the same thing with sanding - especially all of the dividers. I'll pretty much plane them until they just barely fit, and then sand them just enough so they fit tightly at the end. And that walnut and brass combination is so good. Killer work dude.

I like to dilute shellac 50:50 with denatured alcohol, then wipe it on with a rag. It's really easy to get a good looking finish by wiping. You can do multiple coats with light sanding if desired. I think your project came out great! I like the color.

When I was making a set of bookcases last year, one of them had a bunch of pieces I had to keep up with. I labeled them on the end grain that would either be cut off or hidden after glueup, something like A1, B, C, etc. Then I labeled everything on a drawing. Might help with the painters tape issue next time.

Hey JB, check out Paul Sellers clock making series. I use the same method he does for shellac and it works beautifully. It's a little time consuming because you are building thin layers, but once complete it's a great finish. Beautiful project sir.

Putting on shellac with a pad (not truly French polishing) is super easy and foolproof. I also like to brush it on relatively thick and sand with 320 inbetween coats. You will get far better results with a truly dewaxed shellac, try out Zinsser SealCoat sanding sealer. I use it on everything indoors (except maybe dinner tables or anywhere you expect alcohol)

How I have seen shellac used very effectively, is in the French-Polish style. Use a rag that is formed into somewhat of a ball (there could be cotton inside) and apply the shellac, one coat at a time. When one coat dries, sand it with a low-grit sand paper, then apply another. The finish is really nice. That said, great work. Thanks for sharing.

I think it turned out nice. As luck would have it, my current project is... a jewelry armoire made out of walnut but with maple drawers/faces. I agree with you, it is much more of a challenge than I thought it would be for some reason. I've already made a handful of mistakes even though I spent a ton of time modeling it up on Sketchup! So my box is probably twice as tall and a bit wider than yours and I am not accounting for wood movement anywhere near as much as you did here. It seems like I don't run into wood movement issues with small panels in a project like this so I'm throwing caution to the wind and ignoring it haha (I'm sure I'll learn the hard way eventually!). My cabinet has 7 drawers and I intend to do hand cut dovetails on all of them. Yay! lol. Anyway, I also don't have the greatest luck with shellac so I'll be finishing mine with something else. Thanks for the tips!

Hey JB! Just one short thought about shellac: I'm from Eastern Europe, and however it's considered a method of the past and only used by some furniture restoration workshops, it is used a totally different way, called French Polish or Politure. The only question is, how much time do you want to spend finishing your project. Speaking of French Polish, you have to make a "solvent" from shellac flakes and denatured alcohol, let it sit for about a day, and with the help of stone powder, apply many-many layers of finish in 1-2 hour gaps, which is absolutely a nightmare on a project this small size, what's more, no matter how much time do you spend making it, the finish will be extremely vulnerable, any kind of liquid will leave a mark. My favourite finish is Hardwax oil, since with right amount of sanding and buffing, you can easily get a shine between satin-high gloss, without ruining the natural look of the wood. I'm not an expert , just thought to share what I know about this :)
@christopherstein106

Beautiful job. Oil based polyurethane is the best finish on projects that will get fingered every day. You can't beat the durability. Shellac is a good sealer only.

Those zinser spray cans are horrible. Mix it yourself and spray with an hvlp. I restore high end antique furniture for a living and I've tried the cans only to sand the hell out of it or strip it off completely (early days). The thinner the coat the better the result.

Wow this inspired me, hand cut dovetails - sounds fun and kinda annoying 😂 French polish would be best for this type of project I think. Lovely high gloss silky smooth finish is unbeatable. But it’s very time consuming and also thin coats are key

Well cut dovetails are a sign of a good craftsman. Which is why i will never do them. Haha - i know it just takes practice, but i've just decided box joints are close enough for my amateur work - though of course box joints won't hold together on their own like dovetails. Anyway - great project. I'll have to adapt it for something else, though - my wife doesn't ever wear jewelry. Maybe something board game related...

Once you wrap your head around which side of the line you need to saw on, they're really not bad. I didn't even do any practice joints and these still came out pretty darn good. And this would be a cool way to start any little items for your games, e.g. dice, tokens, figures, etc.
