Some tips for action scenes • 180 DEGREE RULE IS REALLY IMPORTANT. • clarity over making it look cool. Alot of animes make this mistake, especially with the part about lunging straight at the screen and then having the camera totally tilt in a different direction, unless your going for that. • based on my experience, bigger panels have more impact while smaller ones make things go faster.• explosions and flashes are good for transitions. • Focus on injuries helps to slow time down and convey the strenth of the attack. • Facial expressions slow time down too since the person has time to react. Closing in on details does the same. • Your anatomy doesn't have to be perfect in every panel, just make the action clear, believable and energetic. Hope this was helpful! If you have other tips you can drop them down below!!

i think in my opinion you can break it but with very detailed camera movements, as it slowly pans across the battle scene, or detailed transitions,just a jump cut would NOT work ofcorse and i personally knew this without even knowing the rule itself,for me it was natural,just flipping 2 peoples position with a sudden cut is unnatural and confusing

I would love a future video on action scenes to tackle making vertical action scenes. I find a lot of comics tips about drawing action, especially big *amaze* action panels relies on people using the width of a full page panel, so that you can stack cinematic "wide screen" shots on a page and I just find that method way less impressive on webtoon, with it's tiny screen and scrolling mechanism. You don't get the same oomph as a wide shot on a page, because there just isn't that width on a phone. As a result, I feel like I'm trying to come up with ways of doing "amaze" panels for fight scenes on my own a bit? Like, I think I've figured out some of the basics, like drawing characters on an angle so one character is kind of "overtop" of another, and I try to pay attention to the power dynamics that suggests. But I need more! More help!!!! So any tips on using the vertical format to our advantage would be awesome! Thanks as ever for the awesome vid!

Thank you for making another really helpful video and helping me to take my mind off of everything going on right now. Action scenes can be difficult. Something that I sometimes struggle with (that you might consider making a video about) is where to place the camera for dramatic effect. Sometimes I will know where I want to place the characters in a shot but I will struggle with where to place the camera to get the most dramatic impact. I think you may have made a video that touches on this already, but it can sometimes be hard to decide when you want to place the camera up high or down low, when to do a dramatic close up or pan out. Please correct me though if you have already done a video about this. :)

I gotta finish a comic until christmas cause it's a gift for my sister. I already drew like 27 of 35 pages and you can already guess which ones are still missing and I'm dreading to do. It's a light-hearted and fun comic, but I did throw in an action scene at the end just to make things a little more interesting. Thing is-- I can't even do the storyboard for fight scenes cause I don't know which poses to use. It's pretty stupid since I could take any pose and make it dynamic, but I can't imagine what this fight is supposed to look like, it's really hard to get into this stuff..

I love your videos because they are packed with great information! This is a good example of that! When you get the chance, can you please also make a video on shading? I’m amazed how shading can transform an image. I have seen many examples of art process tutorials that start off showing just the flats and then are totally transformed when shading is added. I’m very interested to learn more about creating different types of shading. I want to learn how to use shading to portray different environments and moods.
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 жыл бұрын
I'll think about that. Everything I do with comic art is about making it as simple as possible so that making comics is as fast as possible, because it takes a long time to make them. So I tend to lean on simple shading versus any type of beautiful, realistic, technical, time-consuming shading ;-)
@speedytrail9002
@speedytrail9002 3 жыл бұрын
@@walterostlie I think what you’re saying makes sense. I wasn’t sure whether or not to ask because your comic ‘Haxor’ has simple shading, which implies that you’re probably not as much of a fan of complex shading. However, I think you explain how to create comics very well, even using examples that are not directly related to your own style. I like how thorough and informative your videos are and I enjoy watching them. I feel that shading is an important part of creating comic art. Shading can come in many different styles and it does involve technical aspects on various levels. But even if we ignore shading style and aesthetics, shading is a very important tool for creating a mood and sending a message across. Knowing how to use shading to portray the different moods of characters and scenes would be an amazing skill to have. I wish I could learn techniques to use shading effectively in scenes. Also, I’m interested to learn about shortcuts that will make the process faster. For my style, I do care about the aesthetics of shading and I tend to gravitate towards softer shading. I might not find many tutorials in the exact style that I prefer but I think that learning good technique will allow me to apply it to any style I choose. I think it’s ideal if comic art could be done fast but I also think it depends on the story that the artwork is created for. I feel that the art needs to fit the story, whether the style allows it to be finished fast or slow. It would be boring if all comic art styles had the same type of shading. Variety is important. Anyway, I thought I would suggest this topic because I have found all of your instructional videos on comic creation very helpful. It’s up to you whether or not you feel that this is a topic you can cover. No matter the case, I’m always interested in the comic videos that you share :)

Hi Walter! Great video! I definitely have found myself making that non-dynamic straight on action shot with the panel as more of a passive reader kind of pose - It's been challenging drawing at those foreshortened angles. I'll definitely keep those in mind! Q's about your Patreon: Q1 - Any chance of you increasing your Mentorship from 1 to 2 in the future? Making characters more detailed Is going to take up more time than simplifying them, no matter what. But to make things quicker you could make certain details into a brush (I see this done with jewellery mostly), or have a canvas with some of the details on it that you could just copy and paste. Most of the art styles I see on webtoon aren't that detailed , they're just constructed well. Lots of comic artists will also reuse their panels and just zoom in. I notice this mostly in 'I'm the Grimreaper', where it will be the same panel just zooming in over & over again on a characters face. Or another common one is reusing a panel but changing the facial expression. I wouldn't worry about the complexity or simplicity of your style much though as it's going to change anyway. Most webtoons have a glowup where the original art looks nothing like the latest art. Just see what works for you. Time yourself inking and colouring with a few different styles and see what one takes the least amount of time.

Those are tough. First make sure you know what needs to happen in the story. Obviously who wins, but also which character needs to look tough, which one needs to be beat up really bad with maybe a massive boulder. Then think about the location of the fight and where everyone is standing. Make sure to keep that in mind when you are drawing your panels. Finally make sure you thumbnail the entire fight first before you start really drawing any one panel. Make sure it works as stick figures first.

What do you mean by big? When we talk about size of a webtoon we usually discuss the size in increments of panel count. Are you asking how many episodes your story should have?
