This is really helpful, and simplifies the steps to make shaded clouds in a spritesheet. But it makes me wonder what Unity would do if KZfaq charged $0.01 for every person that likes this clip.

Exactly, wasn’t expecting them to render it as cross sections and stitch them together in the game
@gui2056 ай бұрын
In step 4 you have to animate your camera along a path to slice your clouds into layer and to got one layer per frame. The idea is to convert the sprite sheet to a volume so the shader will do the exact same things but in reverse to reconstruct your clouds layer by layer.

Awesome, I've been thinking about making baked clouds for a while. I wonder how performant jt is compared to the noise based real-time solution :/
@INeatFreak11 ай бұрын
ahh nevermind, I've missed that it uses real-time raymarching so it wouldn't be that performant.
@herlantmajor588311 ай бұрын
Tbh ray matching can be performant specially when you sample a 3D texture instead of computing a noise
@INeatFreak11 ай бұрын
@@herlantmajor5883I wonder if it's possible to use the baked volumetric lighting technique they've used for smokes in VFX graph videos, baked 6 directional lighting i think it was called.
@INeatFreak11 ай бұрын
@@herlantmajor5883 I have just tested the performance, it highly depends on how much pixels it covers on the screen. // With default settings: 64 samples, 0.02 stepSize, 16 LightSamples No Clouds: ~270 FPS Cloud covering ~20% of screen: 60 FPS Cloud covering half of screen: 20 FPS Cloud covering full screen: 10 FPS I've reduced the quality as much as I can without losing the shape: // With low settings: 32 samples, 0.025 stepSize, 2 LightSamples No Clouds: ~270 FPS Cloud covering ~20% of screen: 250 FPS Cloud covering half of screen: 186 FPS Cloud covering full screen: 146 FPS (But it looks terrible) This is just single cloud they've provided with the URP Cookbok sample (same as in video). This is not an viable solution, it's even worse than the HDRP clouds. Also keep in mind that this doesn't work well with Camera's clipping plane, even if I reduce it to the lowest point 0.01, there's still clipping at the corners when you're too close to the clouds. So, it's not viable for flying games either.

thats pretty cool... does doing this make the cloud more optimized?
@HomeMech11 ай бұрын
It isn't possible to bring Blender volumes into Unity unfortunately, but if you render slices like this you can. The ray marching shader in the URP book gives you control over the optimization in Unity. ☁️💙☁️

Why dont just use unitys particle System?
@HomeMech10 ай бұрын
You can make a cloud or vapor in the shape of any model with this 3D texture workflow. The particle system is still best for most effects--you can use the camera clipping technique shown here to generate your own particle system textures or flipbooks.

When a Unity tutorial is actually a Blender tutorial. Honestly better to implement a system of sorts which does this automatically inside of Unity, instead of forcing users to use an entirely different software.

Game engines work differently than simulators, it's possible to make a dedicated system but common, Unity hasn't even updated their terrible text tool in almost a decade 💀
