Lorgar making it so human worlds willingly accept imperial law through faith instead of brutally subjugating the populace by slaughtering them until their spirit is utterly broken. Honestly it's funny how the emperor saw himself as a completely logical being and yet acted completely irrational on so many occasions...

I think that Lorgar is Guillimans dark mirror. Like Sanguinius to Angron, and Dorn to Perturabo. I used to think corax was lorgars opposite, but no...thats just hatred. I think the confusing mirror is Magnus and...Mortarion

Erebus was there in the beginning and was playing a very long game to turn lorgar to chaos. In many ways he's the pebble that becomes the avalanche.

I’m oddly drawn to the Word Bearers. I’m completely atheistic but was raised super religious so the whole fanaticism and zeal thing isn’t foreign to me. There’s something oddly comforting about knowing beyond the shadow of a doubt that you’re following the one true path and the Word Bearers exemplify that.

Well the Emperor is all about fanaticism and zeal and yet is a staunch atheist who constantly says not to worship him or call him a God despite the fact that he considers himself to be beyond reproach and his actions to always be just no matter what his subjects or even his own sons say. So essentially he's a Stalinist type figure who condemns religion for the fanaticism it inspires and naturally replaces it with the fanatical worship of the state instead and expects everyone to be blindly loyal under penalty of death...

They're probably the one legion where GW has no clue what to do with lorewise and rulewise. As far as BL goes, only Wraight, Anthony and Josh Reynolds ever truly "nailed" them. They've been somewhat sidelined since their main rivals, the Ultramarines, have been pitted against the amorphous blob that is the Black Legion. While I wish that my favorite legion got a bit more love, I think I'd rather see the myriad Xenos factions get expanded upon. Also Saqqara is the best Word Bearer (Erebus and Kor Phaeron are on a category of their own).

@@nightsage217 id say its 40% Word Bearers, mainly Argel-Tal, Lorgar, Erebus. 40% World Eaters (Angron, Kharn, Lotara), the rest is Humand or Ultramarines Could be less WB though🙈

Yes, think its in first heretic. Ferrus is as frosty as ever, lorgar is moved by the gift but is instantly insulted by ferrus who calls him weak. Lorgars only 'friend' was magnus (another fringe primarch) and even that was strained at times.

I really like their theme. Sometime I interpret Lorgar's ideal of faith is to build hope, despite emperor's personality. In 40k where Law of physics is at best referential, warp magic is considered potential doom to the planet population, and potentially someone damned your soul for eternal. Religion might not be an insane idea after all.

Completely agree the Word Bearers are a fascinating legion I use to love playing them in 3/4 edition with the amount of Daemons they could summon always fun. I Love Lorgar he's such a interesting character and the same with the Legion especially with alot of the Ret cons in the Horus Heresy Novels. Like BorderPrince said defo check out the 3 word bearer novels for modern word bearers. But to get to grips with them definetly Lorgars primarch book to start off, Then the First Heretic its a must read and really flushes out the Legion and why Lorgar turned some great characters. Lets not forget its all Erebus fault.

Lorgar is a great character but he's a terrible person, I kind of agree with Arch. Lorgar was looking for a God to worship because Lorgar was a monster who did terrible things and wanted someone to blame. As long as he was doing it for a God, he could keep thinking he wasn't the monster he was.

@@stevepalpatine2828 Thats an interesting take from Arch, althought reading his Primarch book recently Lorgar is usually the one being abused by a so called father. Dont get me wrong he does do terrible things towards the end. But I think Lorgar likes the idea more that if The Emperor was a God, he would then be a son of a God and his actions could then be a bit more forgiveable sort of similar to how Arch puts it.

@Darklord Lorgar Yeah I think Lorgar was kind of doomed from the start being brought up by Kor Phaeron and Erebus, they were systematic at breaking down any moral compass he might have had from the beginning, and I think the Emperors incredibly ham fisted way of handling his sons, demonstrated by Monarchia (and the inexplicable way he treated Angron by leaving his family to be slaughtered, making Angron an unwilling Oathbreaker in the process, when he had an entire Legion of Astartes, Angrons own Legion, that he could have sent down to reinforce Angrons rebels) unseated Lorgars reason. I agree with Arch that Lorgar did bad things because he liked doing bad things, but being raised by Kor Phaeron and Erebus it's not really surprising how he ended up like he did.

But I like how Lorgar turned on Erebus by telling Kharn it was he who killed Argel Tal. Ive always liked the back stabbing in that legion. and i still love the Erebus and Kor Phaeron divide in the Legion. Yes i agree with your point on the Emperor, it really does show creedance to the civil war always being the plan from the start with how differently he treats certain Primarchs like Angron and Mortarion. Although Baldermort has an interesting theory that the only reason the Emperor did that to Angron was to keep him alive, his rage was the only thing keeping the butchers nails from killing him. And in his love for his broken son who he tried to help and keep alive he fed that rage. I think that does hold up because when you look at the other traitor Primarchs apart from them 2 hes very fair with them all. Even Lorgar he doesnt kill the people he just destroys a city and he loses his pateiance with him in the end.

Secularity in it's extreme, creates only morally bankrupt, nihilistic qnd unprincipled and corrupt nations. Zealotry in its extreme produces self-destructive, cruel and insane nations. Fact of the matter is, vast majority of social movements in history have been rooted on religion. Priests were the original students of sociology and morality, much like alchemists were students of chemistry. If a woman did not wish to be raped by her feudal lord, it was the words of priests which stood as safeguard between rapine of warlords, the greedy policies of taxation, of unjust laws and of ruthless savagery. Sure, religion is not infallible, but is a system that has stood the test of time. It has endured the death and rebirth of democracy, it has outlived lineages of kings and emperors. To presume religion as entirely parasitic is folly. Moral practices which stand the test of time in an ever-changing world must have some sort of solid foundation that lets them survive when so many others have crumbled and fallen.

I think most of the Word Bearers acknowledge that The Emperor is a god, just not that he's a GOD worthy of worship compared to the 4 primordial ones. I don't know how Lorgar feels about it now but I can't imagine they'd stray too far from what their primarch preaches.

@@doomguy9049 No, the Word Bearers do not believe the emperor is a god because they believe that he is dead, thus, mortal as well as his soul is subject to the chaos powers control (your soul is mine now!). The ruinous powers, as far as even the most knowledgeable of the chaos worshippers know, cannot be killed or suffer death and are eternal. They can also influence real space , much like a humans view of what a god can do.

Well, the reprimand *did* involve destroying every city on the planet of Khur, including Monarchia, the 'Perfect CIty'. Out of all the cities devoted to Emperor-worship, that one was the most worshipful. His masterpiece, his great offering to his 'divine' father. And then the Emperor commanded the Word Bearers to kneel in the ashes before the Emperor, Malcador the Sigilite, and Roboute Guilliman and the Ultramarines, while telling Lorgar off in front of his entire legion. Imagine if you'd decided your dad was divine, so you and your pals make a shrine for him, and it's beautiful and the best work you've ever done. Then he turns up with your big brother and your uncle, burns it to ashes, and tramples your ego. For all his positive qualities, the Emperor is a lousy dad.

We're getting into nature vs nurture, I suspect. The Emperor created him, but arguably Colchis and people like Kor Phaeron (his adoptive father) and Erebus made him. And one would have hoped that someone of superhuman intelligence like Lorgar would have been smart enough to see through the cult shit with which he grew up. Or indeed that Magnus could have helped put a few points right when he contacted Lorgar... oh, there's so much blame to go around, there really is!

@@slacknhash eh the way I see it, while Lorgar's upbringing did mess him up, I think a lot of primarch shenanigans could have been avoided if the Emperor just screened them better, rather than being like go conquer planets for me, here's a legion of super soldiers (off the top of my head Angron, Kurze, Lorgar seemed a bit dodge) And he could have been a bit more hands on early for each primarch, see how they fared. Instead the Emperor was like, ok I'll let Lorgar do his thing, oh he's making planets worship me, I'm sure he'll stop, he's not stopping, I'll remind him I'm not a god, still not stopping.. ALRIGHT GUILLIMAN COME WITH ME, I'M GONNA SPANK YOUR BROTHER AND HIS LEGION IN FRONT OF YOU, AFTER YOU DESTROY HIS FAVOURITE CITY. I'm sure these actions won't have any bad consequences

Many Black Library writers tried to make the Emperor into a tyrannical super villain. However, we must not forget some facts. All traitor legions give the impression that they were always traitors, and the writers had to invent some sort of "loyalist" side that they had before turning to Chaos. This also means that they had to make the Emperor incompetent enough to justify their eventual "return" to their true, Chaos side. Essentially, the Emperor suddenly became a really horrible father to all the traitor primarchs, simply because the writers needed to invent a reason as to why the primarchs became traitors. You get what I'm saying? The Emperor was an asshole so that his traitor sons had a reason to BE traitors. Angron is an excellent example. But the Emperor is decidedly NOT evil. He did what he had to do to unite humanity. He crushed dangerous xenos. He almost killed Chaos. He did what no other human could possibly do, and this is why he is considered a God among humans.
