Warm Water Centerpin Fishing Setup

This is my warm water centerpin fishing setup. This is also my river float fishing setup:
-Shimano Clarus 13 rod
-Okuma Aventa 1002 reel
-Raven 10 lbs mainline
-Berkley Big Game 8 lb mono
-Umpqua 3x & 5x tippets
-Janns Netcraft #14 swivels
-Mustad 3366 #8 hooks
You can absolutely centerpin warm water. It's as trilling as fly fishing, but more accessible. In some ways it's easier to use than crappie rod with spinning tackle. But, how to centerpin warm water? It takes practice. However, the cast is simpler than fly casting, imo.
Not many of us live near is trout, salmon or steelhead country. Warm water centerpin angling gives us the chance to experience a heart-pounding form of fishing for the species we target. Warm water centerpin fishing, give it a shot.

6:10 it DOES matter. The screw that holds the reel in place is selftightning in one way. If you turn the reel the other way around, it comes loose😅

You are blowing my mind. For ice fishing, I went to all in-line reels because I can feel so much more if the line doesn't have curls. I always wanted a way of jigging open water with light line and no curls. I also like trying different setups. There are some bank fishing locations near me I think this would be great for.

I just bought this same rod and noticed the tiptop diameter was larger than that of the final guide. I couldn’t find any info as to if this was normal or a defect. Then I saw this video and at 7:35 I can see that is in fact intended and normal. Thanks! Cool video!

Yest that is normal because if it were the same size it would change the direction of the line because the center of the eyelet would sit higher than the other. This is one reason the rod casts as well as it does, not as much drag on the line coming out the tiptop. I use to do something similar back in my rod building days. I would use a regular guide as my tiptop to keep the guides perfectly centered.

This rig is very similar to my zanger rod from St. Croix. setup. 8 1/2 foot rod with a Tennessee handle and sliding rods. Using an old prostaff reel and 4 lb line, I can throw 1/16 oz lures a good distance without having to add any additional weight. Don't know if they make them anymore as I have had this one over 30 years.

I recently won a Lamiglas Redline Centerpin rod and have been looking into a reel for the rod. My wife is actually going to be using it as I will be fly fishing. Was the Okuma Aventa was the cheapest i found but still quite expensive. How long have you been fishing with it and how have you liked it so far? Also my wife says she likes the way you teach and that we will be making some purchases to support her favorite youtube voice lol

I've only had it for about a two weeks. I've used Okuma's fly and spinning reels in the past. I felt confident in the brand. I'm liking is so far. Yes, centerpins reel are expensive because they aren't produced in mass quantities. I chose the Aventa because it was the least expensive good reel on the market, something that would be easy to learn on, and could upgrade the bearings once my casting skills improved.

Do you know of or seen the Australian made Alvey reels? While playing a fish they sit in the same position as the centrepin reel like in your video but for casting the entire reel gets turned so the spool faces the rod guides, you cast and after you have cast the spool gets clicked back into normal fishing mode. They cast incredible distances, hold miles of line, come in huge range of sizes up to almost dinner plate size , colours, fishing applications. Could be worth a look if you want casting distance from a centrepin reel.

Its a shame alrite, but they still have a good stock of reels until early 2023 and chances of needing major spares for an Alvey is so low. Ive got 30-40 year old Alveys that are still in perfect nick.
