Warner Infallible: An Optimistic Competitor to Savage and Colt

Forgotten Weapons

Күн бұрын

The Warner Arms Company was formed in (or around) 1911 to import and sell Schwarzlose 1908 blow forward pistols in the United States. It was run by Franklin Warner, who also operated a sporting goods store (Kirtland Sporting Goods) in New York, and thus had a ready retail outlet for imported pistols. The 1908 Schwarzlose did not prove to be a particularly successful pistol, however, and production was shortly ended. When it did, Warner bought up the remaining parts and tooling, with plans to restart production in the US. This appears to have not been a success though, and in 1914 a new pistol was introduced by Warner.
This new pistol was the Infallible, designed by Andrew Fyrberg - a little recognized designer who sold patents to Iver Johnson, CS Shattuck, and Harrington & Richardson among others. The Infallible was a relatively large and awkward .32ACP blowback pistol, and never did sell very well. In 1917 Warner merger his company with Davis & Sons, a shotgun manufacturer. They would produce Infallible pistols until about 1921, and the last stock appears to have finally sold out by 1924.
There are two main variations on the Infallible, differing primarily in the disassembly procedure. The first guns used an easily unlocked lever to connect the bolt to the dual recoil springs. This led to concern that the lever could be inadvertently unlocked while firing, which would then leave only a small bolt stop to prevent the bolt from ejecting out the back of the frame into the shooter's face. Whether this was a real threat or not, it was certainly perceived to be, as the second variation would replace the disassembly lever with a solid pin that was definitely not going to come out accidentally.
Only about 7600 Infallibles were made, as they were completely eclipsed by the Colt 1903, Remington Model 51, and Savage automatic pistols. Unfortunately, high condition Infallibles are very rare today, but they were originally finished with a completely case hardened frame and look very cool.
Thanks to Ed Buffaloe for the research he has put into the guns, which made this video possible! unblinkingeye.com/Guns/Warner/...

@Stephen Hurd 'Twas the date that Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand visited Sarajevo and was assassinated by Serbian insurrectionists. This kicked off hostilities between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, the recently-independent neighbor of A-H-governed Bosnia. This would draw in the Russian Empire on ethnic grounds of protecting slavic people, which in turn brought in the A-H's secret ally the German Empire, and then the Russians' secret ally France, and when Belgium was invaded, Belgium's secret ally the British Empire, and uh... To say the world has never been the same since would be an outrageous understatement Additional context for those not versed in the late imperial era of Eurasia -Austro-Hungarian Empire: the two were one political entity for about 50 years, and effectively equals for the preceding 50. Also referred to as the "dual monarchy," because nothing involving the two can ever be simple. Ever. -Archduke: a Duke or Duchess was the ruler of a Duchy, a smaller political region for whom equivalent terms could be County or Parish. An Arch-Duke was the title to the heir apparent to the Austro-Hungarian throne. Yes it was a dual monarchy with one Emperor (Austria) or King (Hungary). As I said, simplicity eludes the two nations when you put them together) -Sarajevo/Bosnia: Bosnia was officially an Ottoman territory that was effectively governed by the Dual Monarchy. -Serbia: Serbia had recently won its independence from the Ottomans (friends of Austria-Hungary) in blood. They didn't like the Bosnians, but they liked the hoighty toighty European better-than-thou Austria-Hungary even less (the Austro-Hungarians weren't as bad as radicals would have you believe, but many government officials and royal family definitely had superiority complexes through time). -Secret alliances: A common thing in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

@@stanleycupchamps2009 youre a little confused so i’ll break it down. ian said in the beginning that dude who came up with the idea and patents would license it out to firearm manufacturers (schwarzlose and then warner) after that this guys family’s business merged with the warner company when they were making these pistols. so basically the people who were making these pistols probably never even met the guy who created the design, just owned the rights to do so. hope that clears it up for you!

I lol'd so hard at 15:37. Gun Jesus had this wise conclusion: "This failed commercially because, let's be honest, it's way too heavy. It's bulky. It's awkward to handle. And, it does have this potentially serious safety problem of, you know, maybe accidentally blowing the bolt back into your face. So it's understandable why they didn't become a commercial success." Other than those minor issues, this sounds like a first rate product.

The name comes from the norwegian/danish: fyr means fire; berg means a mountain, a large rock. As regards pronunciation, the scandinavian "Y" sound is a mix between the french "i" and "u" (closer to "i"), that's to say a mix between the english "ee" sound and something else. Fyrberg should hence be pronounced more or less like "FEERBERG". The last E in the word, specifically is in fact (in scandinavian tongues) close to the french "è" sound (a mild "AY" sound in english, without its ending)... Thanks for yet another cool video, Ian!

"Fyr" has several meanings. 'Fire' (shoot/burn) as you say, 'Lighthouse', 'A guy/man', and, at least in danish: 'pine' (tree). I think the last one is the most likely in this case. His name would translate to Pine Mountain/hill or Fir Mountain. Annyway, I pronounce the french u (Deja vu, bienvenue) exactly like scandinavian y or german ü , but I have never met an american who could get that right either - except for french canadians. So I don't know if that's any help. I come from the island of Fyn, but brits and americans call it either Fin or Funen. I think it's a lost cause. lol Just say Fir Berg.

The Swedish "fyr" for lighthouse is a short form of "fyrbåk" where the light came from a fire. It's has the same etymologial origin as "avfyra" so Fyrberg more likely actually refers to "fire mountain" than "lighthouse mountain".
