Warsaw, Poland is a city sometimes referred to as a phoenix because it has risen from the ashes of a dark history. In this video, we spend the day exploring different parts of Warsaw's past which makes us appreciate its current state even more. The day is full of all kinds of highs and lows as this city is truly unique - you couldn't have a day like this in any place but Warsaw!
Huge thank you to the Polish Tourism Organization for having us!

My daughter and I were in Warsaw March 2022. We loved it. She had been doing a study abroad in Prague, Krakow and Warsaw, where I met up with her. We loved the Polin museum and came out feeling the same as you! Sad, exhausted and starving! We loved the blueberry pierogies at that little chain restaurant where the guy in the pierogie suit we had seen on the street in old town came to rest. We were in Warsaw for 10 days, and I ate pierogies 9 of them! The National Museum of Art was fabulous! Great collection of egyptian sarcophogus, relics, mummies as well as a whole section of religious art and altar pieces. I so enjoyed it, I went twice. We loved traveling in the buses and street cars and even got lost once because we got on going the wrong way. We just loved Warsaw, the food, the museums and the Polish people were fabulous.

What a rollercoaster day you guys experienced. Once again, a single thumbs up is not enough. So imperative that nobody, wherever they are, forgets such unspeakable atrocities of the past. This reminder touched me almost as if I was there with you, and not exaggerating when I say I also had a tear. "Risen from the ashes"..so fitting isn't it. The painting design on that synagogue replica is absolutely stunning. Pierogies...I have had (and like) them , but only in the US. Does that count lol. Mark's expression when he's enjoying his food is priceless. Thank you for another extraordinary vlog :)

Hey Scott! Thanks!! Yeah, this was an emotional rollercoaster of a day. What happened in Poland goes way beyond sadness. It's just unimaginable. We love the dessert ones in Poland. Clearly Marc was LOVING it 😂

Mead you had after the Chopin concert... Best ever cure for cold - just heat it up (not too much - you don't want to lose the precious alcohol :)) add cloves,fresh lemon juice and cinammon and simply enjoy by a live fireplace cuddling your dog on a cold, dark autumn evening. Good old Poland - miss it every day..

A great film shot by young people sensitive to the history and beauty of Warsaw. The moving history of Polish Jews, the taste of traditional cuisine, the concert of Chopin's music in the Gothic interiors of the wing of the Royal Castle ... It is not surprising that this city is visited by over 10 million people annually. May as much as possible with the sensitivity of Eileen and Marc. Come back to us.

14:02 -> mead (drinking honey) - an alcoholic beverage created by mixing fermenting honey with water. This one ("trójniak") is from one part of honey and two parts of water, slightly dry comparing to "półtorak" (1 part of honey and 1/2 partof watter - very sweet), and "dwójniak" (1 to 1 honey and water - personal favourite :)). It's old traditional Polish drink (popular from medival ages - before vodka came up). Very good for cold days :)

I also ate some pastry (kolacze zapraszamy) from a little window they had on a little bakery near the square with the Warsaw mermaid with a huge queue in front (they did in an old place they used to hide from the Nazis). Also visited the prison Pawiak and visited the Guetto Wall (today is just a wall inside a regular building). This city is just incredible.

"Dessert pierogi" :D Except they're just as legit lunch/dinner as any other kind :) There are many traditional Polish sweet dishes made with seasonal fruits that we eat in summer, not as a dessert but as a main course. Or soup, there are fruit soups as well but they somehow fell out of grace. But of course, they can serve as a good dessert too if that's how you fancy them :D I'm really enjoying your Polish videos so far - watching them out of order. Tears sprang to my eyes after seeing your visit to POLIN Museum. I love your video. Warsaw can impress or disappoint, but with undeniably difficult history this city is memorial of the past and symbol of the post communism future in Eastern Europe. Hope you'll visit Poland again.

A drink you've drunk on Chopin recital is one of a honey based alcohol drink. It is traditional Polish drink, unfortunatelly it was a bit forgotten cause of partitions and PRL, when occupants was trying to wipe out Polish culture, but now it's getting more popular :)

It's interesting how first you go to see Polish Jews Museum and talk about the Ghettos and then the first Choping part you get is Nocturne in C-Sharp Minor, B. 49 which is main theme of The Pianist by Roman Polanski - real story of Polish Jew and a world-class pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman during WWII. Accidental or planned? If you haven't seen the movie - highly recommended, one of the best WWII movies ever made.

We love all of your videos! Sometimes, you go to places that I have to confess I couldn't bear to, so thank you for your sensitive treatment of the subject. Do you plan to cover the topic of life under Communist occupation as well? Definitely a day of highs and lows. The burning question is: what made you happier? Chopin or the awesome Polish food? I think Mark's face says the latter. :)
@EileenAldis
@EileenAldis 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You're right - certainly a day of emotional highs and lows. Life under Communist rule is probably best seen in our first video where we visited a museum about that very topic (the PRL Museum). There are two more videos coming about Warsaw where we'll cover more of the city though! As for which made us happier...I think it's accurate to say that both filled us up in equally wonderful and different ways ;)

1:57 Palace of Culture and Science might be the highest building in Warsaw, but the observation deck is not the highest. There are some higher observation decks in Warsaw (some of them are even open to public) and other Polish cities (e.g. public deck in Wroclaw or private in Gdynia). Also, in 2020 there will be completed the highest building in Poland and EU (310 m; the whole 40 cm taller than the Shard in London, LOL) with the highest observation deck in Poland (at some 230 m).
