There's this speech Neil Gaiman once gave at the peak of 90s comic mania, to a bunch of comic book sellers. He talked about tulips in 18th century Holland, how there was this massive craze for them to the point that rare breeds were worth thousands of pounds, until eventually people woke up and stopped paying that much for a flower, and the bottom dropped out of the market. He warned that, in a niche hobby like comics or flowers, if you ever get more focused on the money you can make than the product you're selling, the market will catch on, sooner rather than later. The product itself has no inherent value. He was proven right a few years later with comics. And I think about that with Magic.

@@SomeKZfaqTraveler magic has a somewhat different scenario than comic books and sports cards. You usually want to hold on to the product and make use of it in Magic compared to the other 2 where the product just sits around and collects dust. Maybe if powercreep continues people will wake up to the fact that what they're buying is constantly being made irrelevant and Magic might find itself in the same scenario.

The year with countless Secret Lairs and double the commander decks?
@danielfichtner667
@danielfichtner667 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly the reason why I lost interest in standard. You go to a prerelease. Find new exciting cards. Try to build a deck around. Find out that most of the cards you want to use are already out of rotation. And before you have a deck, there is already the next prerelease. I love to play magic, but also have a life beside it. And yeah only people that don't do anything else than playing and collecting magic cards win all the little tournaments and every single event. There is no chance for casual players. So a casual is always way behind. That's why I play commander with my friends. And just build decks after a theme I like. :)
@TheFirstTriplefife
@TheFirstTriplefife 3 жыл бұрын
@@danielfichtner667 standard rotation is the reason I got into commander as well. Yes, I could have picked one of the other eternal type formats which never rotate, but the fact is those formats usually cost a arm and a leg and I only have two of both and am not willing to part with either. Plus, commander reminds me of the old DBZ card game I played when I was still in highschool, graduated 04. Another big reason why I'm not a fan of rotation is I'm used to a non rotating list of cards from playing years of Yugioh. I'm a big fan of getting to play with any of my cards at any time. Except for banned cards of coarse. I still remember how pissed I was after putting money into a standard deck for my first tournament, making 3rd place out of 30 people (really busy day) and then being told about rotation. Man was I upset to find out 2/3rds of my deck was rotating out. First and only standard tournament.

Imagine if WOTC actually made decks for other formats. High cost reprints put into decks focusing around formats that aren't getting any attention. Wow, just thinking about it really has shown a light on what a little planting, watering and upkeep on the proverbial MTG grounds for other formats can and would do. WOTC really does need to do just that and give us more for other formats. Also, they need to bring back gold bordered cards, just sayin. Those things legit.

I liked having each deck be from one plane, the problem was having all be from the brand new plane we just arrived on. Each deck felt like an expanded version of a brawl deck only having standard themes. Each deck should have been from a different world, not all from the same. Or atleast gone back to an older plane with more then a single set's worth of cards. (personally i feel all 5 could have been from a world we have visted a few times, like Innistrad/Zendikar/Ravnica/Dominaria or even ones from when we had 3 sets in a block like Alara)
@kwads1909
@kwads1909 3 жыл бұрын
Of all of Profs qualms, this one was the one that felt the hollowest. I actually really enjoyed the extended focus on the plane and I believe it helped to flesh it out more than the base set could. Seeing the “partners with” mechanic to show some of the monster-human relationships was a great addition which made that aspect of the plane much more real. As Prof outlines, there are more than enough products coming out now. We can feel confident there will be more than enough opportunities for a wider scope of plane representation (such as commander legends) elsewhere.
@gyorgyor7765
@gyorgyor7765 3 жыл бұрын
My feelings exactly, it's one thing to have cards coming from all kinds of planes for Commander Legends decks for example, it's another thing for Commander decks tied to specific planes like the Ikoria decks and Zendikar Decks, those should only have come from same plane (although cards from other sets that fit say Ikorea's themes with new art & flavour text tying it to Ikorea is fine, as long as it's grounded in the plane).
@kyleellis9177
@kyleellis9177 3 жыл бұрын
@@gyorgyor7765 I kind of think around now we should have gotten one or two commander decks from each plane visited this year, instead of overwhelming us when the sets released. That's really my only complaint. these felt like brawl decks because it was basicaly 2/3'rds standard cards. Ikoria and Zendikar had more commander decks so have 2 from them and one from Theros and one from eldraine. Or Have the Ikoria 5 be two from Theros, two from Eldraine, One from Ikoria. Now for xmas Have 1 Ikoria and two Zendikar decks come out for Xmas. If the Ikoria 5 were all from a world not in standard, i would have liked it the most.

Brilliant analogy about the sweets at the end after everyone has already had pie and cake. And I think that people who did focus on every product that came out this year would feel full already. I think for those of us who didn't focus on every little thing that came out really enjoyed it and, if I may be so bold, think you might have enjoyed it better if it wasn't your job to rate every single product and critically look at every single product. Maybe there is something to be said that for not every product is for everyone and maybe we should focus on the things we enjoy doing.

This year's product blitz was insane. Granted, there was a product for just about everyone, but it was impossible to keep up with. I did buy more this year than any other year since I returned to the game. A box of commander legends, six commander decks, and half a box of jumpstart ( not counting singles and then I'm sure I'm forgetting some things). The worst part is the lack of play availability due to the pandemic. Honestly, I think being forgettable /oversaturated is a good thing! For a while now with so much magic content and being able to netdeck more efficiently than ever, each set becomes "known" really quickly. I think it'll be nice to have some cards that people just forget about. I think this will lead to that hidden gem feeling/the "woah what's that card?" feeling down the road for cards that came out this year. There has been information overload and that will lead to an increased sense of uniqueness and mystery for these cards, given time. So it does feel overwhelming right now, but in five years, I think we will look back fondly on this year as we rediscover what it has to offer.

I do agree that this year was an overload of new potential commanders. At the beginning of the year, I saw the cycling precon and had plans to buy it, use part of it to reinforce my Anje deck, convert another part into a Kykar tokens deck, and use the last bit for a Rielle wheels deck. By the time commander legends came about, I wasn't inspired to build any new commanders from a set ostensibly FOR commander. I feel that if this had just been the random mid-summer special set, I would have probably reconsidered building a pirates tribal deck or maybe a Belbe deck. Also, regarding the Zendikar commander deck's availability, I feel a large part of that has to do with the decks not containing new cards that are staples of the colors (Fierce Guardianship, Deflecting Swat, Flawless Maneuver, etc.). People who bought these decks did so because they wanted the decks or the reprint, not because it was the only source of a single card they wanted.

"If it isn't broken, don't fix it" as a whole feels wrong, Wizards is completely capable of making new exciting tweaks or just overall positive changes to their products and design methods, not working to better something just because it works as is means you are left with something that will never change and evolve until people find a problem. I do agree with the sentiments in the video, I just think the philosophy of only making improvements to solve problems is wrong.

Very true. The idiom implies that the subject is already 100% perfect with zero room for optimization which, of course, is impossible to achieve objectively. However, when we embrace the evolving nature of a product, we also have to embrace the possibility of steps backwards... even large steps backwards. It's all part of the process of optimization. Hey Prof, awesome video, I loved and agree with all your arguments. Two suggestions for future videos: 1) Magic products that in 2020 went unnoticed (not great, not failures) but that could’ve been great if WotC hadn’t released so many products; 2) A review of all the supplementary products released since 1993 (modern event decks, duel decks, masters sets, planeswalker decks and so on) so we could have a clear picture of the direction WotC is going.

I really agree, professor. Until now, I hadn't considered the fact that locating the commander decks alongside the expansion's Planes took away some of the value in viewing new legends from distint parts of Multiverse. Still, I think it can also be seen as an opportunity to further expand the lore of each expansion. Anyway, thanks for giving voice to what many of us think: this year was saturated. @Frostifycation
@Frostifycation 3 жыл бұрын
Wotc doesn't care because each whale's will outspend a whole playgroup of "normies." It's about hitting their target profit goals for shareholders and manipulating addictive behaviors in susceptible populations. Sure, they might throw you a hug or a "we care" bone every once in a while, but that's just PR word-smithing to play you all over again. The truth is that vast majority of Magic players are no longer the intended audience. Until there is an exodus in such numbers that Wotc new bottom line makes their teeth chatter, the deluge of products (and honestly, likely power creep) will only accelerate.

@@Frostifycation I know what you mean, i have a small Lgs & was buying in the secret lairs to have them in when people wanted them, but it's just too much, I have stopped buying them & am getting Flesh & Blood in for the first time due to Wotc destroying their own fan base on purpose due to greed. At least Legend Story Studio's seems to have a good product & want a fun game for people, they can earn enough without exploiting people ... it seems like they are now where Magic used to be before it went all Hasbro, similar to TSR not realising their mistake when Wotc offered them this game back in the day, when it was just a fun game you played before sleeves were invented & you were waiting for your D&D game to start. Sadly Wotc has lost it's way ... I don't like saying this after playing the game since Revised, but it's not the company it was & finally players have realised the glittering object before them is just a mirage over a money pit.

There was more emphasis on it this year though. Mainly commander legends and jumpstart pops out at me for this year. Of course WOTC wants to push limited every year but this was supposed to be the year of commander and yet the set that was supposed to be built around commander had a huge emphasis on the draft format. WOTC said that themselves and it shows. Commander Legends honestly didn't bring that much to the commander format. I think it would have been much better if it was built around the mindset of a masters set that way everything isn't focused around the draft experience considering it is supposed to be COMMANDER. The only thing Commander Legends will be remembered for is the reprints, louts/opposition agent, and maybe 10 legendary creatures out of the 71.

I think the shift to half price precons was great, this in a set of 4 or 5 is a great starting point for new players / pods and also a good point to start a new casual build. My other highlight for the year was some of the creative and fun legends in commander legends. So... Little story of my experience with MTG. Fire & Lightning was actually one of my first two MTG decks ever. My late uncle had apparently been into Yu-Gi-Oh! and MTG (though he had only taught me how to play Yu-Gi-Oh! before his death). After he died, I got his stuff, which included (by my estimations) about 4,000+ MTG cards as old as Unlimited Edition (but a TON from Torrent and Invasion). Anyways, those sat unorganized in a binder until recently (I've sorted and bindered 720 cards so far). So around 2011 (freshman year of high school), I had reunited with my best friend that I had originally known between 3rd and 5th grade, who had moved away. We originally played Yu-Gi-Oh! (and continued to for a while after reuniting), but one day when he came over, we went to Walmart and looked at the cards. We saw Magic: The Gathering, a card game we weren't yet familiar with that looked like Yu-Gi-Oh!, but cooler (way nicer art and card frames, and cleaner foil). So I got that, and then my friend and I both got a Core Set 2011 Intro Pack. I chose the Red/Blue and he chose the Black/Green. We played for quite some time, going up to the Innistrad block before I stopped playing and went back to Yu-Gi-Oh! (I returned to MTG during the Return to Innistrad block, but really got back into it with Amonkhet, playing through Hour of Devastation until I got mad at not having enough money to keep up. I finally most recently returned to MTG with Core Set 2021. I just ordered the M21 Chandra deck, some sleeves, and Showcase Mountains. I had also gotten Commander Anthology Vol.1 when it came out. I missed Vol.2, unfortunately.

The time to "savor" sets was a bit wonky because of that. However, I still believe that Commander Legend was one of the best sets that's been released in a very long time. I got to be honest here, I have a friend who is a big walking dead fan. He loves Negan and Lucile. The walking dead cards are probably the only reason he is getting into the game. Now, as for how it was handled and the none silver boarder treatment, well yeah, they could have and should have done better. They should have done way better. I can understand from a business point of view that they are trying to see how far they can push the envelope, but this, this really shows a lack of concern and care for their customer base. Wizards is currently in the process of ramping up their numbers. The CEO said he would double the amount of money WOTC puts out. He is doing it and we are right now in the middle of the 5 years to double WOTC profit margins. Things will only continue to ramp up from here. Sadly, we should expect more of the same or worse. Personally, I'm just hoping that the rumors are true and WOTC gets sold off to a company that actually cares about it. I would rather have a good company at the helm, rather than see it all squandered for a quick buck under papa Hasbro's mighty hands. We can hope things will change for the better, its just not likely.
