Coming from a third generation custom woodworker with a full shop I would not recommend a drum sander for your application. If the wood is not completely dry you will gum up the sanding belts in no time. If you are looking to do it at the cabin I would recommend a bench top planer but with a helical cutter head. You can find them for less then a grand. The helical head will leave a smooth finish with no chatter marks of a traditional cutter head.

As a long time wood worker, I would not use a drum sander. The amount of abrasives you would use on that semi dry wood would be staggering. A DEWALT planer would be faster, and leave a great finish. I have a jet planer and it’s over the 1000 limit you set. The DEWALT is much cheaper .

Mike be sure to tell Tom that the aging of the concrete really does make it look more and more like real wood! Smart move to use the land plane to move wood and yes the drive does look good! Enjoy Memorial Day with a moment of deep thought for those that gave their all for us...

I'll agree with a lot of other comments here and suggest a planer Mike. Don't you already have a Dewalt? Any kind of sander on wet (or not really dry) wood will cause headaches. Tons of experience from these guys giving great advice. Heck, a new set (or even a couple sets) of planer knives is much less expensive than a new drum sander. I love the idea of the helical version.

Pine and drum sanders are difficult. The pitch loads the abrasive and then you get burning.

Hey Mike. My name is Tom and I run a custom wood working and cabinetry shop out of northern IL. I cannot recommend a drum sander to you as I personally do not like the results I’ve gotten with them. They will leave marks/lines from the abrasive that you will have to go back and sand out with an orbital. Best bet is a wide belt sander but they are ridiculously expensive. I own one and I would do it for you if you were closer. My recommendation is to find a company near you that has “sanding services” and bring the load over to them. I hate hiring out for work but this was a great tip I learned when I needed to sand hundreds of parts to prep for finish. Hope this helps.

The planer is the way to go The drum sander will give you a nice finish but will take way more passes and alot of replacement paper. The planer will do them faster with fewer passes and still give you a good finish. You have to be careful with any small grit from getting on the boards. This will chip your blades and cause a grooved finish. And make sure you run the boards according to the grain direction. A helical head planer will give you a longer service life and easier replacing the cutters versus a full blade.

When I lived in Florida we had several large slash pines and I would collect the seeds out of the pine cones. Then put them in pots and they started growing. I planted them all around the yard. Then after seeing my neighbor he was growing live oak trees from the acorns and I decided to do the same. They take a long time to grow. I can go back and look at the property on Google maps and see the pines that I grew. In Illinois when we lived there was in the country then which now has become the city, I tore out the fence in front, bought blue Spruce trees in a small container and now they are over 30 feet tall. It really hides the house and along the one side I started with more to go along the the property side all the way back. I wish I could grow them here in Missouri.

Forget the drum sander, maybe for kiln dried oak & maple, but wet pine will be a total mess, you'll be changing the paper every 10 min.. Go with a good planer with replacing the factory knives with helical. BTW have you bought that metal detector I recomended yet? You'll want to use it before planning the wood! Also, with all the great wood you have why skimp on the planner? You should also be looking for a used jointer like the Delta DJ20 8" for your home shop. Make sure the pine is dry 7 check it with a moisture meter, the wood really shrinks a lot, if you don't you'll end up with 1/4" -3/8" gaps between the boards on the wall..Another tip, you need to put weight on top of that wood or the boards will cup & twist., also cover it...good luck! I hope you found this helpful!

I have a Grizzly drum sander. It's a 18/32 inch model and they run just under $1000. It's fine and has really been awesome when I have glued up a wide panel that needs to be flattened some. Even with 100 grit paper on the roller, it leaves grooves in the wood that have to be sanded out. It wouldn't be as bad if I took extremely light passes and the finish would be fine. For what you're doing, I would use my Dewalt planer with the Shelix helical head on it. Taking a light pass with that would be faster than my drum sander it would be a lot less work, and the finish would be really smooth. The Carbide inserts on the helical head hold up for a very long time. I have run my planer for 5 or more years and just now, turned 2 of the inserts to present a new cutting edges because they were leaving a very small line in the boards. Shelix makes quality replacement cutting heads for almost every planer and jointer on the market. I think they run around $400 (maybe more now) but I have never regretted my purchase.

Mike, You Specifically said you DIDN’T want to use a planer, that’s why I recommended the Jet Drum Sander. However I do agree with some of your other responses that a DeWalt Planer would be better, it’s cheaper than the Jet and if you put an after market helical carbide cutter head, now you’re logging! Grizzly 18” drum sander. I love mine most cabinet door panels fit perfectly. I use the thing for EVERYTHING. Last weekend I took up a customers floors took all the nails out. Ran them threw the grizzly and reinstalled them. The costumer was so happy they didn’t need to buy new floors. Yesterday I ran a bunch of rusted 1/4” metal strips. With a heavy grit drum one pass per side 🤌🏻. With all of your specifications that grizzly being under 1k was a fantastic investment for me. Sending you energy my brother. Stay safe out there 🦾🧬🔱☀️

i too would suggest a planer over a drum sander. I was a builder in northern michigan for 20+ years (NOW RETIRED) and have used a portable 735 dewalt for a bunch. and although on hardwoods it does go thru knives quite quickly they are double sided and a piece of cake to change.. as long as your using sharp knives it speeds thru the materials with a great finish. I operate the 735 planer and stand with ease even though i have use of right arm only (due to a childhood paralysis) and it works great. GOOD LUCK.

Your drive was rutted bad!! We could even see the bigger base stone, which also showed how well the drive was made. Im not sure you're 100% correct in your statement though. I've seen a certain bearded guy using a land plane not getting the same results you get. Maybe it's not the level of education but the experience using equipment like you have. Two guys using the same machine will have different results in operating. One will aquire the "feel" of the machine sooner, and get much better results. Hey Mike, watching the time lapse of you milling the pine logs, I can see that the support stands at the rear of the mill are not on the ground... you can see the frame flexing up and down as the carriage moves. It looks like you're going to sand all of that wood at the cabin... which means you're going to have to run the sander on a generator... which means you're going to have to use a pretty good sized generator. I know you said you "just want to knock off the high spots" on the rough cut boards... can you do what you want with a handheld belt sander? Lots cheaper and a 3000-4000 watt class generator should have no problems running it along with a few fans and lights if you're working into the evening.

Mikie, Mikie. Using a drum sander, especially with pine, the sanding belt tends to gum up quickly and is a bit of a pain. A random orbital or belt is usually better as sanding pads,belts are relative cheap and quick to change.

Need to check you sawmill out, in the video you can see the far end moving up and down as weight of the head moves. Looks like the leveling feet are sinking into the ground.

I have a drum sander, but wouldn't use it on pine due to the pitch gumming up the paper and being a softwood it might get burn marks. A drum sander is slow progress as well. I would get a portable planer, I have two of the Dewalt 735 that work very well and you will get a faster finish than a drum sander.

It’s funny. Years ago I bought the box blade because that’s what I saw most KZfaqrs use. It does work, but watching you with the Land Plane I suspect you’re right that it probably provides the best road finish and does the best to do touch-ups. Having said that, I still think the box blade may be the best starter implement, particularly if you need to create a road and all you have is at tractor.

As I mentioned on your short. Go with the supermax open ended drum sander. I know people keep talking about planers but I would want to keep some of the character of the rough sawn wood and the planer would take that right off where a light pass or two with the drum sander would just smooth it out a bit but leave the character of the rough sawn timber.

I agree 100% with Derek. Drum sanders are a pain and a planer with helical heads will do the job much better with a lot less aggravation. I had a drum sander and after using it for a few weeks I got rid of it

Search for a local cabinet maker or other wood shop and just use their drum sander for a small fee…or free with a YT shout out. You have spent the time and effort building this audience…use it to your advantage whenever possible!!!

Nice video, Mike. Your predictive abilities are right on. My wife and I were returning to Morgantown, last night, and were driving on I68. Between the Hazelton and the Bruceton Mills exits in Preston County, there was a really, really severe thunderstorm that poured down buckets of rain to the extent that you really wanted to get off the road, but it was so bad that you didn't want to park and get hit. Just creeped along at a snail's pace until we got out of it. I would expect that you will want that land plane again the next time that you head to the cabin. Check with your neighbor.

I concur with all of the expert woodworkers. DIY planers would be the best. The Dewalt 735x is the king of DIY planers, but it comes with a straight blade. Adding a Shelix head is highly recommended, but that will put you in the 1200 dollar range. I’m not sure of the model number, but Oliver makes a DIY planer with a Shelix head and I’m sure you will stay under 1000 dollars. Having said that, if you can budget for the Dewalt option then I would recommend that.

Some people may not have heard you mention your intent with the pine boards for the interior of the cabin, or they just aren't paying attention enough....no problem, it happens. As you mentioned that you like the rough sawn look, but just want to ease it back just a bit, a drum sander will work PERFECTLY. It won't gum up or take forever, or use a ton of sanding paper... of course, it will take some time and will consume some sanding paper, but that's part of the process. As I mentioned on your short video, I would highly suggest looking at Baileigh Drum Sander - (SD-174). They are having a Memorial Weekend sale, and it will get it closer, but just over your budget (not affiliated in any way). You will have a great functioning machine that can power through most anything you throw at it and last decades.

Love this place, as you know i call it my Norman Rockwell Peaceful serenity place. Land plane is worth its weight, it does a fantastic job of road grading, and quickly as well. As a woodworker I wouldn’t recommend you start with a drum sander. They are very costly, and really a luxury tool even for the most experienced woodworkers. What you need is a planer. Even woodworkers with drum sanders use a planer to thickness and smooth the rough material before drum sanding. A good planer, preferably a 2 speed model will nearly negate the need for sanding all together for what you are doing. I’d recommend a Dewalt DW735X- well within your price range and is as good as you will get without spending 4x more. Beware- this is a slippery slope, you’ll also need a dust collector for any of this unless you are working outside and don’t mind the mess (and wearing a respirator).

Put a post out there for a “Timesaver”. Probably over kill and uses 220 or 440 but it’s an industrial grade drum sander. Great tool for your work pavilion. It will go forever if it has been maintained. Cool investment with the kiln dryer.

Hey Mike, been watching your videos a little before you retired from being a blaster. You get so much done with your equipment and I do enjoy watching the speeded-up segments and the drone shots. You ask about drum sanders. I have one since I retired in 2003 by jet but it craped out on me early last summer. So, I researched and got a Grizzly 18-36 drum sander. Took delivery in late summer. It has been working fine. I like the table that moves up and down instead of the arm moving. Get a much better sanding result. And of course, the grit on drum can be changed. Be sure to read the instructions when you do change the paper on the drum. I paid around $600/700 for the machine. Tried to catch it on sale but couldn't.

We have a few miles worth of gravel roads on our farm in hilly terrain close to Deep Creek Lake. Drainage is always an issue, and we use various techniques to minimize problems. For your situation, I'd put in a couple of broad based dips at a 45-degree angle across the drive and run the water off into the woods. Get the runoff off the driveway before it starts to erode.

Any job worth doing is worth doing right .And you Mike , are an excellent example of that .Work smarter not harder ,the tractor idea was the way to go for sure .

I would suggest going with the bench top planer ,There are a number of good ones out there, Just choose a planer with a helical cutter head as you will get alot better finish I have a drum sander and I believe it would load up your belts pretty quickly.

I would not use a drum sander, even with 60-80 grit paper and that being green pine the pitch will fill in the sandpaper then burn marks appear and uneven sanding. A dewalt 15” planer would do much better just planning one side and be a nicer surface.

I can relate! My driveway washed out last week which is about 1/4 mi long. It took a couple of hours to straiten out and I'll need to dump some more "gold" on the driveway (otherwise known as gravel) to clean it up a bit.

As a wood craftsman I have to agree whole heartedly that a drum sander would be a huge waste of time and money, especially with partially air dried pine. You would be changing your expensive belt before you got two boards sanded. A portable planer is about your only option and you may have to de-gum the feed rollers occasionally.

Hey Mike, maybe you should think about carrying a 5 gallon can of diesel in the back of your truck. Not only fir those oops moments but you never know when it could come in handy in an emergency now days.

I have an old paved driveway about 600 feet long. Paved in 1999 and has seen many hundred tri axel loads of materials over the years. That is an under estimate. The driveway is badly beat up. My wife wants me to remove it and go back to gravel and start using a land plane to groom it. That Land Pride unit of yours looks like exactly what I need. I bought a Delta drum sander new back in 2000 and it works extremely well. They don’t make it any more but the Jet 16-32 might be just the unit for you. The Performax 25 inch unit is also nice but well over $2k.

Just finished up a garage with t&g pine. Used a product called Continental PolySeal and was thrilled with the results as well as the ease to apply. Won't yellow up like polyurethane. Wish I could have shred the pics for you to see.

I was waiting to see how long it took you to use the tractor to move that pine. Would have taken a long time walking it to the pile. Another thing I would go with a planer rather than a drum sander even if you air dry it remember it’s still green lumber. Another great video keep them coming. I have a love hate relationship with my stone driveway. Mine is a little over a half mile. Of course I live on top of a hill so there is 3 different hills on the drive. Always some kind of maintenance needs to be done, especially this year with all the rain. I love it mainly because I can hear any cars coming up the drive and I have a minute or two to react.

Mike - My father had a Jet 1020 drum sander - 10 inch single pass width - it was good, but changing sanding belts was tight as it is a compact machine. Small and portable though. I have a Performax 19-38 that I have used for 10 years. You can handle up to 19 inches in 1 pass. It is more than $1000 though. You can get precut replacement belts, or cut your own from bulk rolls.

Mike, consider making more boards at home & doing the finish work at home also. That way you would have power & equipment to finish the boards & you would have help if need be.

Hey Mike, Thanks for the wonderful episode of "Outdoors With The Morgans " What a lovely property You and Melissa own in West Virginia. Your camp is definitely work in progress . But it must be gratifying to you to be able to complete the interior walls with your own lumber once it air dries over a couple of months. You're so right in that the Land Plane Attachment does a wonderful job leveling up the gravel driveway into your camp property. As you know from your past experiences that maintenance work never ends. But with the great equipment and your knowledge you process, it certainly make the work less strenuous. ( I'm just curious if you are able to trace your Morgan Family Heritage back to the famous Justin Morgan of Vermont U.S.A.)

I highly recommend the Grizzly 24" dual drum sander for $2100. Grizzly also have a 12 1/2" single drum sander for about $1000 that is adequate for the job, and only 1 1/2 HP, so it's probably adequate for the job you're looking to do, but I don't own that one. A third alternative that is cheaper is a Porter Cable 4x24 belt sander, which I do own, but I know I don't have the patience to do even a rough job on that many boards. I have owned several Grizzly tools for decades, and they are extremely well built for the price.

Hi Melissa, Mike, just a thought. At some point put drainage in. From the back of the cabin, all the way down the drive way. This will give the run off a place to go. And not tare up the drive way. Or eventually get under the house, Joe Capo.

Hey Mike, read just a few comments and they mostly seem to not recommend a drum sander. I have a Powermatic DDS 225, which is a pretty nice machine, but won't recommend going this route. Paper will clog up fast machining pine and the paper is not quickly changed and is not cheap. I would use my Festool Rotex hand sander which can be pretty aggressive to clean it up and keep the rough look. Of course the other option would be to plane it which would be the fastest, but not the look you're looking for. I'm retiring this year after running my company for 37 years doing custom homes and cabinetry. I'm taking up splitting wood :) Ran my new Wolfridge 28C for the first time today, got the idea from your show, thx!

Mike I have a Jet drum sander and it does well for small amounts of work. With those boards, even if dry, it will trip the breaker on the machine. It will take many passes to remove the band saw marks. I have a TimberKing that produces nice boards but there are always some marks. A planer is the best bet for the whole job or at least before you use a drum sander. You may want to consider a used 220 instead of a new 110. I have both and the extra HP on the 220 makes a lot of difference when planing large quantities of lumber.

Mike if you are just trying to lightly scrape the wood try a hand plane. One quick pass on the fuzzy edge and it might be all you need. If you are only gonna plane a few boards and done consider a harbor freight planer.

In addition to the ditches, I have some pretty aggressive water bars on my driveway to protect it, but I'm still always having to maintain/replace them. If the rain doesn't tear them out, it washes the driveway above and fills them.

I have the old gasoline Kombi system. I bought the something 130 power head and several attachments. The dealer tried to talk me into buying the blower but I already had several. I watched several videos and went back and bought the blower. I am very surprised and happy with it.

Based on the intro, I had expected things to be much worse than actually found. Glad that it was mainly a bit of water damage on the road in. You would get twice as much done if you didn't have to keep playing with the cameras so we can see what is going on.

Hey Mike, I might have put all of that stickered wood inside the cabin, here's my thinking, no needles, no bugs/debris from the outdoors and it would still dry out, I'll concede that it might dry out quicker outside with the breeze and such, but then you also contend with rain/weather, so just wanted to get your thoughts on that maybe next time? Grizzly 13” 2 HP Model 60940 helical cutter benchtop planer for $870 at Home Depot has worked beautifully for thousands of board feet. It’ll be quicker and yield a much better and more consistent finish than a drum sander. It can also be easily transported back and forth to wherever is needed at the time.

I posted in the 'Short' of this video, I have a JET 1632 Drum Sander and LOVE It, I looked at my local Woodcraft and it is $1500, JET does make a 1224 as well, didn't see how much it was but given it is smaller, price must be lower. Best of Luck.

You might put some concrete blocks on the top layer. Help keep things flat. Just a suggestion.

I recommend the SuperMax drum sanders. They sale for around 1400 dollars the 18-36 is open ended and handle up to a 36” wide board.Woodcraft and Rockler stores both carry these. For the sandpaper I would look at Klingspore woodworking, they make sandpaper
