On a recent weekend trip focused on the National Mall, we certainly did a whole bunch of walking. The electric scooters did start to look very tempting though, LOL. The DC Metro was super convenient and quick. From Reagan National to L'Enfant Plaza near where we stayed was inexpensive. Worked out great for us. Although we took the Circulator only once, I would recommend it since it goes pass the many landmarks and is a way to give your feet a rest. Thanks, Rob for all your recommendations and tips. We only scratched the surface of DC and hope to make it back soon.

As a local, the best way to get around by far is a foldable electric bike. You can zip around the city faster than metro, car, or bus -- you can ride on the street and bike lines depending on the neighborhood. I can ride (door-to-door) from the white house to Georgetown in 5-8 minutes. You can also fold it up and bring it in a taxi, a metro car, or even a bus if the distance is too long or you get tired. In fact, yesterday, I was afraid of leaving my bike outside the postal museum because of bike theft, so I just brought it into the museum and the guards were totally fine with it! If someone could rent these things out to tourists for a few days they'd make a killing!

When I go to DC, DC Metro and walking are my favorites as is the DC Circular. I took the Metro bus from Kennedy Center to the Metro Center Metro stop. It was like taking a tour bus. I saw areas that I didn't even know were in DC. I would take the Metro bus again

Thank you, I found the bus goes just where I want to go on a loop about every 15 mins between my main spot and a ride share. I can just take the bus. If I don't want to take the bus one day, I can pick up a e-bike or normal bike at the same park-and-ride share site. This is going to be a lot cheaper than Uber everywhere in DC.

Subway then walking to destination for me. My last trip was a drive to DC, and we only used the car to get to the National Arboretum. I will admit to enjoying the open top buses, they're fun now and then.

I was in DC last week for 5days and I told my good friend who lives there that this time I'm going to get around DC using the Metrobus, CirCular Bus, and walking. And since I'm a Senior I had the Senior Smartrip Card on deck in which I added a week pass for 6 bucks. It was well worth it. I got to do and see more sites than the many years I've come to DC. For years the MetroRail was my Uber when I come to DC. I told my friend I cant see things when I'm on the train so that why I use the buses. I had blast. I thinking about come back real soon and maybe try those Capital Bikes. I saw them all over the place. I wish I knew there were 2 bucks for 30 mins

Capital Bikeshare used to be high on my list, but the last time I visited, two of the bikes I used broke mid-ride, and the other time all of the bikes at the stand were deemed not operable by the app. Maybe I was just unlucky that day. Cycling with my own bike would definitely be number one or two on the list of ways to get around but not a option for 95% or more of visitors from out of town 🚴‍♂️

I'd probably also want to add things like bringing a bicycle (if you're driving in) or a longer term rental to the mix as a personal bike is easy to take on the metro, but is probably only recommended if you really like biking. There are some really great longer-distance bike rides for all ability levels as well in DC.

We did a golf cart tour in DC and that was awesome. My dad can’t walk very far at a time and it was an awesome middle ground. It was small enough to where it could get up close to the sites and you weren’t with that many strangers, but my dad didn’t have to walk that much. Plus, they pointed out George mason.

Bicycles ARE the best around the National Mall, for sure. Though, it was hard for me because I had to avoid pedestrians taking up the whole paved pathways, and I had to pass them and ride on the lumpy grass with tree roots. It seems like pedestrians only are aware of traffic coming toward them, that they see, and of course don't notice anything coming behind them; they spread out to cover the path entirely. Oh well.

my girlfriend and I are planning on almost exclusively walking and using capital bikeshare as we are both pretty active people, with an occasional Uber/Lyft if we are going somewhere a bit further like Old Town Alexandria and have worn ourselves out for the day. I've already downloaded the Capital Bikeshare app and made an account...I'm thinking a couple of 3-day passes will make the most sense since we will be there for about 6 days. Looking forward to it - thanks for the video updates!

Hi, thank you for the great info!! We are a couple with an 11 year old who plan to rely mostly on buses and walking (and of course the metro if needed). I don't really understand the SmarTrip card, whether we can use it for the circulator, the metro , the metrobuses or any other local bus company. On the circulator website it is specifically written that DC Circulator only accepts the $17.50 7-day WMATA regional bus pass, which can only be loaded on to the Smartrip card. Does that mean that if I purchase this 7-day card I will be able to use it freely on all others? I don't want to worry about planning my trips and topping up my card accordingly. I want to buy a free pass card that is accepted every where for the 5 days that I am going to be there. Is there such a card? Thank you again for the informative videos!!!

I have 2 young kids who aren't old enough for the bike share (16 minimum per existing rules)... I was considering purchasing kick (leg-powered, not electric) scooters for cruising through the National Mall a little more efficiently (which might also help get us between air conditioned spaces in 30-40% the time compared to walking in the summer). We are staying at the north end of Foggy Bottom, too. In your opinion, would these scooters be a practical choice for the National Mall? for getting to museums and monuments from Foggy Bottom?
@TripHacksDC
@TripHacksDC Жыл бұрын
My personal experience with the old fashioned kick scooters is that they don't actually save much energy compared to walking but may save some time if you are in a hurry. The tricky part is determining whether they kids are actually going to carry them around when they are not in use or if you have a system in place to carrying them.

@@TripHacksDC After just spending a week in DC, I really benefitted from your tips and had a blast. Thanks a bunch, a tip is due to you. In our experience, the Circulator Buses around the National Mall didn't show at their regular intervals (headways). I think they struggle during the July peak visitor season to keep up with demand. However, the WMATA buses were reliable. I like Google Map's features for transit. There's a layer to turn on specifically for transit, you click the bus stop, you see the bus numbers, you click the bus number, and you see the bus route and schedule. It's amazing, and worth the clicks because of the limitations and assumptions it makes when searching directions. The Metro subways were amazing, especially when staying along lines with multiple routes minimizing your wait time. Locations along the Blue/Orange/Silver lines were super quick and easy to navigate to, and Yellow/Green line transfers at L'Enfant Plaza were simple enough for exploring the Wharf or Navy Yard areas. We spent about $40 per person on our Metro Cards during our week's visit (and we were busy!). One last travel hack I'll share: With most museums opening at 10 AM, we found ourselves taking later lunches after ~3 hours of museum time. We would have large, filling lunches that meant we weren't very hungry for a full dinner. We found that Whole Food's prepared meals and access to a microwave in their café seating area was a comparably cheap meal that didn't leave us with excessive leftovers.

@@TripHacksDC I wanted to share a funny story about the downhill tip at the zoo. While on the Metro, I saw another family who was staying in our hotel on the Metro getting ready to exit at the Zoo stop. I shared with them your tip of staying on one additional stop for a downhill experience. A local rider on the train overheard and his jaw dropped open. He said, "MY GOD!! I'VE LIVED HERE FOR 30 YEARS AND NEVER REALIZED THAT. BUT AS I HEAR YOU SAY IT, I'M MAD AT MYSELF THAT I HAD TO LEARN THAT FROM A TOURIST!" 😆
