It is quite interesting how the Arquitens does show something of a stylistic development from the Venator. Or, at least, the same designer was involved with both, which might or might not speak well about the Arquitens.
Anywise, it seems to work pretty well, despite coming out of Kuat Drive Yards, and had some pretty interesting features.

This is one of my favorite Star Wars ships, probably because it makes a lot of sense. The Venator-class is cool in personal opinion, but it is just a supercarrier with a battleship attached to it as an afterthought, while the Imperial-class is a battleship that carries TIE fighters as its AAA armament. The Arquitens is like a show designer went "hey you know what these two fleets need, a destroyer analogue." That is just great.

I've always considered the Venator-class to be basically the Star Wars equivalent to the Lexington-class carriers from WW2. It's a dedicated carrier with a bunch of design flaws due to folks not knowing how to aircraft carrier yet, but has enough going for it to stick around. So there's a whole bunch of ideas the designers had that just didn't pan out due to being impractical or not needed (the hangar catapults for the Lexington, the massive bay doors for the Venator). And then the guns. Both ships seem to have been designed around packing fairly large gun complements "for self defense" that frankly were a complete afterthought and unneeded. The while the Lexington packed Heavy-cruiser caliber guns, the mere act of firing them would likely damage the hangar deck, not to mention their poor firing arcs and heavy offset from the centerline. The Venator is even worse, with an even larger gun battery that is just as useless, yet somehow convinced Republic Captains that the Venator was a cruiser. No! You're a bloody carrier made of wet tissue paper and slightly above average shielding (cause the ship is never capable of using the full power dedicated to guns).

@@oracleofspace3931 That is a good example. From what I understand the Lexington-class aircraft carriers began construction as battlecruisers and were then changed to carriers during their construction.

@Oracle of Space it would be really cool if the Empire or First Order took the design of the Venator and improved it specifically to be a dedicated carrier. Fix the hanger door, ditch the broadside turrets and replace them with missile turrets or better point defenses, then reuse the power saved on turbolasers to give it better shields.

My personal headcannon is that the lack of things like railings in Imperial design is a side effect of the Tarkin Doctorine, the Empire's military philosophy, which emphasises ruling through fear via the projection of overwhelming strength. This obsession with the appearance of strength has lead to features such as safety railings being seen as an implicit admission of weakness, and so Imperial designs don't mostly have them.

My favourite bit about Star Wars is that the Empire literally has a rule of cool excuse, which makes a surprising amount of sense, in their own military doctrine, which can be used to retcon all their terrible designs, e.g: The Tie fighters are cheap garbage making them only good in swarms- swarms are big and scary, thus Tarkin Doctrine. The Star Destroyers are unnecessarily massive making them tactically flawed- they are big and scary, thus Tarkin Doctrine. The SSDs and Death Stars are insanely massive making them tactically useless- they are bigger and absolutely terrifying, thus Tarkin Doctrine

@@pretzelbomb6105ironically, that was the excuse presented in the parody webcomic Darth &Droids, which posits that Star Wars never existed and reframes the movies as being people doing a space themed TTRPG. When someone questions the lack of railings on Coruscant, one of the players theorizes that they use tractor beams and force fields around every building to act as safety nets that slow and guide falling pedestrians to safety. The DM basically endorses this. Fun fact. The incredible cross sections book series claims that a single shot from a turbo laser from an Aclimator class star destroyer has a yield of 200gigatons, and the main turbolasers of a Venator class Star Destroyer has a maximum combined output of approximately 860 Teratons per second. That’s eight hundred and sixty million tons of TNT per second! For reference if all 70,000 nuclear bombs on earth at the time of the cold war were detonated at once in the same spot it would only equal a yield of 4.769 Gigatons. The meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs equaled a yield of 100,000 Gigatons. That is some insane BS.

why most star wars ships (even rebel one's) have exposed bridge towers is actually reasonable, the ship has to fit a hypermatter reactor just below in the ship so that it can be powered, this reactor gives of Ludacris amounts of power, radiation and heat. so much so that if you put shielding around it it would start a meltdown, so a massive amount of the ships mass is intended to disperse this across a massive surface area the tower is a safety feature designed to protect the command crew in case of a reactor breach. sw ships are designed heavily around this safety hazard

I... actually can confirm this. Firsthand experience. OK, long story. There's this game called Space Engineers, which would probably actually be pretty popular on the SCS Discord server. Basically Minecraft In Space. So a few years back, I was in a group that ran a 3-faction war in the game over the course of a good 6 months, two 4-hour sessions per week. We went from the 3 factions dropping separately onto a planet with nothing but a survival pod to 2.5 full fleets of Frigate-class capital ships. Which, of course, went through multiple revisions. My ship was the fleet flagship for Red team, and while it was mostly configured for turret broadsides (going from mounting 6 turrets when first built, to over 150 by the end of the series), it also had a dozen rocket launchers mounted forward-facing on the nose. Which was the worst decision I could possibly have made, because firing rockets while the ship is under acceleration would cause the rockets to fly backwards and hit the ship itself. I eventually just removed them and left the space empty pending any ideas I might have in the future, because every time I tried to use the forward rocket launchers, I would blow off part of the front of the ship. Another member of the team took several of the design ideas I had come up with and perfected them in our gunship, dubbed "Stealth Is Optional," which ended up mounting a pair of forward-facing railguns instead of rockets, and used them to pretty good effect in the final episode.

So, with regards to the whole 'light' 'medium' and 'heavy' classification of weapons, I've always linked that towards real world naval weaponry that we have, based on WW2. "Light" capital ship weapons (turbolasers) would be equivalent to 6" and smaller naval cannons (such as those found on the Cleveland-class Light Cruisers, and then smaller guns (5") found on Fletcher-class Destroyers, all the way down to the 4" or so commonly found on older ships, british destroyers, and IJN destroyers... "Medium" would be that 6-9" range, such as Des Moines-class heavy cruisers (8"), and whatever weird french/german/japanese naval guns existed in that range as well. And above the 9" range would be the "heavy' guns. From early 9" pre-dreadnought guns, all the way up to the 18.1" Yamato guns (e.g. the super heavy turbolasers found flanking the Imperator-class Star Destroyer's command tower.) Then on the lower end, 4" down to about 3" is heavy lasers , 3" down to 2" is medium, and below that, 2" down to... 0.5" (12.7mm) are the light guns (mostly self-defense grade stuff, and common land vehicle weaponry.) Then of course, hand-held/blasters.... come in light, medium, and heavy varieties too...but thats a long, long book... BUT, it does give some reasonable context to the Arquietens' armament, Eight barrels of lets say, 6" (light) turbolasers; along with another sixteen barbette mounted 3" laser cannons; and four torpedo tubes (big boom, short range, so probably something like a 21" USN WW2 torpedo found on the Mahan or Farragut classes.) Which, lines up pretty well with a real-world post-WW1-WW2 light cruisers armament. And it has a small hangar too. So, it fits a variety of rolls quite well.

People forget, that the Star Wars universe didn't see organized conflict in thousands of years and before that, it was not against fleets that fought off and on for years. Once made, those ships were what they kept using. Maybe one or two engagements and single ship combat, so they didn't generally use fleets. So the knowledge of how to make things function for combat was not refined - more they were made for terror or intimidation. You can see that just from the fighters used by the main antagonists. Humans on Earth have been using naval ships for combat for generations, redesigning and refining them so they (usually) get better. Now, look at the Star Wars criminals' ships. Those at least make more sense because anything that didn't have a use was torn off and discarded.

@@chalion8399 I think you make my point for me here. While large scale military engagements were a thing of the distant past by the time of the Clone Wars there were still a whole host of criminal organisations and pirates. On top of that a full third of the Galaxy was listed as uncharted. Having one class of ship, especially by the period of the Galactic Empire decades after the Clone Wars, was massively short sighted. In just about any situation a mix of escorts, dedicated transports, recon and even supply vessels are vital. A heavily armed super-carrier is impressive, but needs some support. Another “fun” aspect is that if you build a ship for intimidating purposes only it is often highly impractical. Once the shock and awe has warn off a Jack of all trades like that has dozens of flaws that can easily be exploited. As such the Tarkin Doctrine was quite possibly the single worst policy imaginable. Dreamt up by a career politician that had little to no practical experience and even less interest in reality.

The Arquitens; the rare occasion that the Empire and the Republic's navy both did something quite sensible; build a ship which is both economic while still giving a fair bit of bang for your buck. I will quickly point out that it seems that the Imperial Arquitens got an extra pair of laser cannons on the ventral hull. It also seems that only certain variants had an internal hangar, while most variants had to just hold three TIEs in the fork of its bow. While I can't say that the extra guns were added just because some Imperial Admiral with their head screwed on was worried that Tarkin was going to mothball them because they didn't fit the Tarkin doctrine (which is a subject I'm looking forward to), it definitely helped give the ship some extra firepower. All in all, I think the Arquitens is a good ship. Personally, I would strip out the broadside batteries and either upgrade the ventral turrets or add in more missile batteries and bring the bridge down a bit more so it doesn't end up being rammed by an A-Wing, but that's just me. Also quick shout-out to the Gazonti Class; it ain't pretty, but when you need extra Star fighters for a patrol floatilla or something for Logi work, it isn't a bad choice.

Thank you for these vids. :) I started thinking about optimising turret placement for the Arquitens to maximise both forward and broadside power. I wandered through offset placement (retain one in the current position and move the other toward the bow, say). Then I thought, "Why not just put them both on the dorsal spine, one turret superfiring?" Sure, to have rear-firing main battery capability you'll have to remove the bridge, but we all agree that's a good idea.

I read an exuse for the bridges somewhere in the old cannon books pre Disney. Since transparent durasteel is like 98% strength of normal durasteel the "glass" itself isn't an issue, just the comparative lack of armour. They argued that since ion weaponry or natural phenomena were so common and would knock out key electronic systems (also why most main guns were manually operated by droids/clones and not centralised) this meant that the officers could still see what was going on without sensors or cameras being online. Allowing them to use what systems were still active to full effect, and be ready to immediately use other systems when brought back online.

I always liked that video on the Venator as god people defend and stick up for that ship sooo much even though it's basically a space version of Kiev-class carrier and there is a good reason those didn't catch on. The Arquitens is a light cruiser which only tries to do light cruiser things and outside of dealing with plot armour seems pretty good at it's role, compared with the Venator which tires to do everything and requires ungodly levels of plot armour to be effective.

The Arquitens in The Mandalorian was a modified version, I believe. I read somewhere that it was specialized to work as a deployment platform for those droids. The catwalk you criticized looked like the drop bay for the droids where they walk out onto the catwalk and step off, which would explain the lack of railings. If it were real and not a space fantasy, the mandalorians likely would have ignored a sign somewhere that says "Keep clear while door is open." No idea why the doors were left open though, the moff isn't very good at handling security it seems. I think the forward hanger also was a result of that ship being modified. It definitely wasn't standard, which would make sense with the size of the ship. There's no way its going to be able to hold more than a few TIEs at most, especially since they're already somehow making room for those droids and whatever equipment they needed to power and maintain them. (The Dark Trooper droids were supposedly very power hungry)

My assumption on the floor openings is that those are drop bays for troopers or droids equipped with jetpacks to deploy rapidly out of. You could have two lines of troops march down the entire length of the gangway and then simply step off either side, to drop immediately into a combat zone, or drop to planetary surface while the ship is in atmo or low orbit. We don't see the ceiling of that area very well, it's possible there are cable mounts up there allowing troops to tether up or down through the force shield quickly. Such a facility makes sense in a setting without star trek transporters to beam places. I also suspect the walkway is a gangplank that can be retracted, allowing larger cargo to pass through the opening.

I'm not sure if I remember this correctly but I think the bridge problem was answered back then in the Extended Universe. If I remember correctly the Turbolasers, back when there was no legends and canon, were said to be so powerful that armor was basically useless against it the only reason why there even was armor was to defend against missiles and such So shielding was the only effective counter to Plasma Weaponry so it didn't matter if the bridge was exposed or not once those shields were down it didn't matter either way.

It's strength varies in the lore but if I remember correctly the original lore treated it as being as strong as durasteel but much more expensive and the windows are used in ships and fighters for landing and taking off and for not running into something if your sensors are too damaged for instrument flight rules. Retcons made it more and more stupid to have windows, though, and weakened transparisteel into a vulnerability.

They use natural visual methods instead of sensors in Star Wars, because they are infamous for being unable to account for the capacity to move in three dimensions. They actually poke fun at this in The Bad Batch.

The Arquitens would serve you well in the early Galactic Civil War period, especially since many early Rebel fleets are made up of starfighters and corvettes. But once the late-game Rebellion shows up with large Mon Calamari ships and B-Wings, you can kiss your Arquitens-class cruisers goodbye; the B-Wings using a mixture of ion cannons and proton torpedoes, and the Mon Calamari cruiser's turbolasers that are designed to punch holes in Star Destroyers, will blow through your smaller cruisers with ease.
All Greek Star Wars shuttles are stupid. (They're called Abecederian? Really?)

It helps that they gave the Nova-class Dreadnoughts such appropriate names
