There is only one Skill in Wasteland that is always necessary, Toaster Repair.

**This comment contains a minor spoiler about the early game** Good game for sure. The early game dilemma was really well done. Even after you make a decision on which settlement to save, the radio keeps torturing you with feedback about what you doomed the other place to. It made me feel bad to the point of restarting the game. All of these years later, I still remember the voice of a woman begging for help on the radio while her loved ones were dying.

@@Crimsonfangg I feel like Wasteland 3 lacks a touch of grit. It's alittle too vibrant and "Neat" for a post apocalyptic world. Fallout 4 suffered from this aswell. I liked both. Wasteland 3 is admittedly a bit zany and comes off as a bit PG rated because of the dialogue or some characters, but they both play well. In WL3's defense, it skirts that line and manages to pull it off without devolving into shark jumping territory for the most part. The wheels start coming off the axle a bit at the end of WL2 with the combat encounters, but it's very strong throughout. I don't think the main story matters much. It was clearly just made a backdrop with the villains bringing some of the dread for the setting.

Great review. Really thorough and focused. I had similar experience and out of those 2 W3 is definitely my top pick but mostly because how devs neatly ironed out a lot of clunk which made whole experience a lot smoother. Knew that you would dig it. I did like Wasteland 3... but Wasteland 2 was a lot more "open world". I feel like you could better customize your party, as well. And the tone was much more consistent. I actually like the Hightower Ag Center conundrum. You had to think carefully about how you, as a Desert Ranger... you would pick. Also, makes it more interesting for a replay, since you can just take the other choice to see how it would go.

I had hurt my back and had to take a couple weeks recovering (kept telling myself I'm not really injured I'm vacationing in the wasteland). Played very well on console. (I'm almost completely a console gamer because, although I love crpgs in general I do not do well sitting at a desk; console games get played in easy chair). When you stated that you only get attribute points every ten levels I was like "Whaa? I get them every five levels??" Turns out back in 2018 I installed a no level cap mod that also changed the attribute distribution to every 5 levels that I totally forgot about, so the last few years I've been playing a "cheaty" version of the game without realizing it. What's worse is that I'm pretty sure I've made comments on reddit about character builds and such since that time so that's embarrassing.
@jothain
@jothain Жыл бұрын
To be honest imo it should've been something like that, maybe 7. Completed original very early on the release and now completing dc version. I remembered that blunt weapons are very effective and made "grunt" that I put bit too little strength as I recalled getting attributes way more. Now quite near the end game I don't think I get that character like I would've thought. In this regard it's quite easy still to screw up making good team. It feels bit silly to super upgrade skills, but character itself diesn't get that much better during complete playthrough.

@@jaredponder4149 it's great game imo. I highly suggest to grab it. I'll try to give run down if my just completed crew from second play through. There's four from the start. One of the most critical was Pills. Combat medic that focuses on speed. Field medic and surgeon skills maxed at the end. Weapon skill handguns, I suppose smg would also work well. So to say bonus skills for her alarm disabling, but not worth maxing out maybe about 5 points would work. Maybe couple leadership points as she is always near others and leadership increases stats for others. Second quite critical character was Hex that can be selected from the beginning. Maxed energy weapons, demolitions, computer science and good at toaster repairs skills. Secondary weapon skill which energy weapons fella definitely needs could be ie. Assault rifle or shotgun. And for anyone that would use shotgun then go full into it and have perks that disable friendly fire. Without those perks shotgunner is quite hard to use efficiently. Third character was Cold Eye and he had maxed sniper rifle skill, you need at least one of those, maybe two, but no more. Also safe cracking maxed as it's very useful for plethora of cases throughout the game, very essential skill to have. Also almost weapons smithing skill for him as adding mods to various crew weapons increase stats quite a bit and is very useful to have. Note that skill tree doesn't have to be maxed, especially in the early game. You'll see quite early on what mods need what skill level to install. He also had good mechanical repair skill as if ie. pick lock and have critical fail, he can try to repair it for second try. Also many missions in story require good repair skills too. Then just one points for surgeon and field medic. It's critical to have other person with very basic healing and surgeon skills as your medic will for sure go down few times no matter what you do and she will die instantly if no one else has those basic skills, very easy to dismiss and have problems in the game. Then my "main" character had blunt weapons and heavy weapons skills almost maxed, this person needs as much as possible strength coordination and awareness, also some speed if possible. Blunt weapons will stay very useful attack skill through out the game as it'll work against normal living targets and robots. Imo much better than bladed weapons skill. Now next comes characters that you can encounter in the game and get into your squad. These will change quite a bit depending on your choices in the game so I won't spoil, but I'll tell their skills so you'll see how stats where on the rest of the squad. So three characters more. 1. Outdoors skill maxed. Not needed and would be actually good to go for all encounters, but with this you can skip many of them. Though it gives one good thing which is you'll notice hidden caches in big map that can be quite useful. Sniper skill maxed, perception maxed now this is very useful and almost mandatory to have one character as he/she will notice alarms, mines and various other things. So have this character go in first and rest follow him, trust me on this. Also had smg skills and few points on leadership, but that should've been put more on persons that stay more in vicinity of squad as leadership has range where affects and sniper obviously stays far from the main battle, this was mistake/wasted skill on sniper to have. Then the 2. Character. Shotgunner maxed and lockpicking maxed which is also almost mandatory skill to max out on one character. Also some assault rifle skills to counter that short range of shotguns. Now 3. And the last character. He had also blunt weapons maxed out, also some assault rifle skills and hard ass and brute force skills. Note that all three speaking skills are useful to have in squad as one with good brute force skills. This brute force guy had maxed out strength and good coordination attributes and ended up being very good in quite many combat situations. There is possibility to find "combat shooting" skill book late game (note ie this requires to have maxed out perception on one squad member). It's one time skill that will increase critical hit possibility to 99%. I counter intuitively gave this skill to this monster brute with blunt weapon skills and he became absolute killing machine one hitting many strong characters to pieces in quite late game. Minor hint that you won't even have possibility to find this book until quite late game. Very short version. Early on have medic (remember few points on some other character as medic backup!), sniper and brute force guy. Also focus on those three speaking skills and never try to have them on one person, but they preferably should be on those four starting characters. Have one with good perception. Energy weapons are almost mandatory late game, but useless in the beginning. Have at least one good sniper. Do not focus on heavy weapons early on. They will chew up your ammo stocks really fast and make note of what weapons use what ammo types. On my first play through I ended up having squad that used much one ammo type and ended up in few tight spots. Now the last and one of the most critical things. You can found skill books as mentioned through out the game. Do NOT use them early on. Use them late when you already have specific skill almost maxed out. This will enable you to preserve those skill points by large amounts and you can have much more skills than you can anticipate. Also another important hint. You'll find tons of "trinkets" that you can wear my any character. These will modify stats quite a bit. So many skills aren't useful to max out by leveling, but by wearing trinket that can give you ie. +1 stats. Pay much attention to these. Ie. I never maxed out Hex's computer science to level 10. He wore trinket that maxed out to level 10 and read a skill book quite near was it level 7 to increase it free. Always remember that those last few skill points are very, very expensive so-to-say and there can be these couple ways to ease up. Happy gaming. Hope this helps 🙂

@@jaredponder4149 Also I highly suggest to check out those attributes work. Imo they can be checked out from wiki's etc. without ruining the game and should be more precisely mentioned in game. They affect characters a lot. That's maybe the most critical I neglected on my first playthrough.

The main problem with the difficulty in this game is that the premade and recruitable characters that you find are so poorly min-maxed that they sometimes becomes almost useless. I started the game on normal with a pre-generated party and played through half of Arizona while struggling. Then I restarted the game one difficulty higher with a min-maxed team and had a breeze. And some recruitable characters are even worse. I had a sniper who could shoot his sniper rifle four times before Scotchmo could shoot his shotgun even once with both at the same level. This due to the much higher action points and initiative of the sniper.

Here's a trick (exploit?) for anyone who gave up on this game because of the annoying early game and would like to give it a second chance. note: You need somewhat high initiative on at least two chars, but if you don't have at least two chars with almost max initiative, your party build is bad (it's the most important stat in the game). 1. When the game starts, go to the weapons range at the far left of the first map. Open the door and unlock the box inside. 2. Save before opening the box and reload until you find a rocket launcher inside. If you are on iron man, you can just restart the game and it won't take too much time. 3. Go to the world map and walk around the initial areas until you find a traveling merchant that sells expensive weapons (make sure it's the right merchant, you will know when you find him). 4. You can't beat his guards, but his entire inventory is on him. Find two chars with the highest initiative, place the faster one near the merchant and the other one near the map exit. 5. Use a third char to blow up the merchant with the rocket launcher. 6. Pick up the stuff on him with the guy you placed near him, end turn (you can't move anyway and shooting the guards is pointless). 7. Nex up should be the guy you placed near the exit. Leave the map. There is no "you must gather your party before venturing forth" in this game. Gratz, you got a set of high tier weapons (second highest out of widely available weapons in Arizona). This should make the radio tower and the first story quest area an absolute breeze, but will not make the game super-easy for long because you are still squishy at low levels. It will just speed up early firefights that are annoying because neither side can hit anything for any significant amount of damage.

Actually you don't necessarily need to finish the game to let you characters into new game with all their stats and skills. All you have to do is get access to Rangers HQ and detonate the nuclear bomb. So it's quite easy to get quick 15 lvls then detonate bomb and start new game with lvl 15 crew ;) But you can't screw up in your character creation phase, specifically during attribute point distribution, or you will suffer)))

As someone who does take his fictional worlds - including in games - ridiculously serious and generally plays any game that offers enough choice and narrative (or role play agency) with my player character aligning with my ethical, moral and political creeds, I think this game is much more my cup of tee than WL3.

I loved it. Bought it on release on Steam. Knew the story of Fargo and his Kickstarter. Played on window 7 laptop. Bought it again this time Director's Cut on PS4. Now I have a Deck so I guess I shall have 2 revisit it once more. Ok, maybe 2wice...

Loved the stories, atmosphere, even the theme music in 2. You're out doing all these quests, then you step into the robot town and the music changes ... anyone call for a hero? Afterwards, you think you're a badass, only to come to California to find out your powerful weapons are pea shooters. 😁

W2 is the only Kickstarter I've ever donated to (although I plan on donating to the tabletop Heroes of Might and Magic 3). I got my PS4 copy. Big mistake. It was not designed for PS4. I knew it was a good game, it was just unplayable for me. I relented in getting W3 on PS4 because it was so well reviewed. All the problems were fixed, awesome game... so I bought the whole Wasteland collection on GoG! 😁

What upsets me is I prefer the weapon balance in W3 but I prefer the attribute/initiative/combat turns in W2. W3 is a lot more aproachable to someone who doesnt like the combat/character gen systems in W2.

You know, after I had played Wasteland 3 for another playthrough, I came across your channel with this video first. (I've consumed many others since, we've played a whole lot of the same games!) Anyway, it struck me that if I had the system and the UI and the next-gen graphics of Wasteland 3 with the storytelling of Wasteland 2... I mean that's pretty much the perfect version isn't it? I think they must have hit a production wall like you were thinking with three or something, because it just drops off at the end. The choice and consequences is fabulous, they probably could have picked up the pace with it here or there, and the Borderlands-esque the sequences and dialogue in 3 punch things up. Yet still I think in some ways this game was much more fulfilling to beat.

Some of your comments are interesting based on the order you played them. I played all three at release. Agricultural Center vs. Highpool was an easy choice based on how those areas played out in the first game. It never occurred to me that there would be a lot of players who didn't have that context to make the choice. And I loved the humor in the first game, thought the second game lost that and became too serious, and then loved that the humor came back even stronger in the third game. But I know a lot of people liked Wasteland 2's tone especially when they hadn't played the original. And then they were shocked by Wasteland 3's shift, which was just a shift back to the original. It is like the art style shifts in the Civilization games where people like whatever they're played first and don't like when it shifts back to earlier games.

Ah man I love Wasteland 2: Directors Cut. Playing through the game again after about 3 years. Just got my file to Damonta, saved everyone in silent springs and helped the mechanic. I chose Ag Center over Highpool this time. Curious about how it effects the game if you fail to save either of the towns. The first time I played the game I didn't know it was time sensitive and I let them both die by accident, but I restarted and saved Highpool because I felt terrible lol!

Regarding difficulty. I think WL3 is much easier, but WL2 is easy if you do some things right like if u get the crit book on a sniper or energy weapons, that did make the scorpion fight much easier. On the other hand I think WL3 is easy due to crafting being in now compared to launch, so if you have defuse perk for all those extra nades, you could often kite enemies with a pipebomb and while running away with that 1 unit engage throw fire in the sprint. By the time i get to your grp they be bleeding on fire and u could gas aswell id it is a single hallway often getting them to 10-25% sure it is cheese but was much easier than I expected. Feels like WL2 was harder in that sense

I enjoyed trying to ace the combat in the CA region. Like sharpshooting legs to slow down the enemy, shooting their arms to make them miss or lose their weapon, lowering their armor... and hence destroying them before they could do any damage. I used cover a lot. In the very last fights, I think all the NPCs survived! (not obvious as those last enemies do massive damage). Totally agree that some weapons are much weaker, notably the shotgun that was useless my whole playthrough. // Ranger difficulty, which felt like the proper challenge.

The stats system can use some simplifications or oddities, like Int 3 is useless (need 4 or nothing), Charisma has an odd design that pretty much only affects the range of the Leadership bonus. Then 3 dialogue skills! (I spread them on 3 characters) So can't wait to play WL3...

Meme builds and runs can be fun, from melee only through to solo play - there's so much replayability with different builds or story and RP choices. Req-only weapons or seeing how far that stick can carry you or how a problem can be -failed- resolved. Let Angela fall in battle, dig up Scotchmo's missus (or a kid and his dog in Highpool) and brace for varying consequences.. Best to leave Ace.

It is an excellent CRPG indeed, even if I agree with your critical points. There are some great RP parts in CA you did not mention: I mean Mannerites issues and Hollywood vs religious freaks. The main story is linear and just pushes you forward after. :P ( I had played the first one, so choosing to save either the Agri. Centre (AG) versus Highpool was less random for me, but good point.)

I like wasteland 2 directors cut a little bit better just because I don't know if it was something up with just my system or what but my copy of wasteland 3 even after updates was just buggy as all hell. I end up having to reload a save on almost every major quest of the game because something would bug out and it wouldn't be able to turn it in or something along those lines. I've tried many many times to get the November rains ending and every time a glitch comes across that causes me not to be able to do it. When it's running without glitches it's great and I love it. I just have as of yet had a clean run of the game, or at least not had a run that didn't have a glitch that Seriously broke the game.

An odd part of this game for me is Angela Deth. When I originally played it I remember talking to her at the citadel before heading out on the first mission, but it wasn't until I played the Directors cut that she joined me on my way out to that mission. I don't know if her being a party member was added in the DX or if I just played it when there was an existing bug that prevented her join event from triggering, but that's always hit me as awkward whenever I reflect on this game lol

I liked this game but it felt like struggling with game features that would've commonly been found a few years back. Although flavorful, calling the radio to level up or caring about water (and then not) and having useless skills feels like some old school RPG stuff. Didn't mind the water too much I think it was fine and I'll take it over Kingmaker's camping any day. Main story was... ok, I guess. The interesting thing were the side missions. I haven't felt aggraviated by morally grey stuff in many games and this one did its job perfectly. You can't have happy endings everywhere, and if there are, it'll make you work for it. That's why Wasteland 3 is a hard one for me. Main story's great, locations and factions are interesting, art direction's solid and the mechanics are streamlined in a good way. But it all feels too... parody-ish? I like having a laugh or two in a while but everything was so comically overblown that I couldn't get too into it. It does have serious moments (Aspen, Factory) but it doesn't take itself seriously most of the time.
