Catching Spanish Mackerel and reef fish off Fraser Island & Double Island Point. Things turned nasty when a Mackerel swings around and puts a treble hook straight the bottom of my foot while it's still attached. Yep it hurt and so did the removal procedure. How to remove a hook with a file.

I kept a small set (10") of bolt cutters on board just for this. They cut down to a 6/0 up to as big as one would use. fortunately never needed them. Great vid Greg

Great video, as always great footage and great information not like some of the other rubbish out there. Love the great idea with the file, a few years back old mate gave me a great tip about carrying a small pair of bolt cutters, the same thing happened to them, except he had the treble through his big toe “ouch” they were about 40 nm of the coast and had to return early because they couldn’t cut the treble either. Also loved the fact you added the information about the footage was before the new bag limits, it had me stumped why you kept more than the bag limit for a while.

Thanks for the kind words mate It's much appreciated. We normally have a set of bolt cutters on board but not this trip unfortunately. I will make sure the cutters and batten stay on the boat in the future. The new spanish bag limits don't come into affect until the 1st of July 2023 but the southern closure has just started. Runs from 1st of Feb until the 21st of Feb then another one from the 1st of March until the 21st of March. Thanks for the support mate.

Another cracker mate! But thank you for showing me I made the right decision with a checker plate floor, and always wearing shoes (or at least crocs) on board - ouch!!!! Top effort though to not only stay out, but stay the night and keep at it the next morning, and my wife absolutely loves Maori cod so is super jealous 🙂 A trip up the sunny coast to double island point just made the list

Mate, had this happen to me several times,,always have a first aid kit and a little set of bolt cutters. Also for future reference if you held ice against the area it is literally a pain killer, only temporary but you won't feel anything during the extraction process. Great content, just found you and am working on watching it all.

haha thanks mate. Yeah I make sure the bolt cutters stay in the boat from now on. The pain was manageable. Just wanted to remove it straightaway before it swelled up and made it worse. No pain no gain they say.

Appreciate seeing what you see on the sounder as well as your rigging technique, all making for an enjoyable video, bugga about the foot but justifies my carrying around a small set of boltcutters under the baitboard, not been used yet though. :) Thanks Greg.

Another fantastic video. Would love to see a video of inside, maybe the sandy straights kauri creek/bluff reefs. Caught lots of reef species and Pelagics around there and with your experience and expertise I think you could make a cracking video fishing those areas. Keep up the great content, cheers

My oldest son Elijah had two of the three prongs of a treble through his leg recently care of a feisty wahoo. The treble had small barbs, so I put some mono around the hook and with a quick pull it popped right out. We released two marlin later that trip and all was forgotten about the treble :) small barbs are definitely the go! Nice work with the file :)

had the same thing happened to me Greg, feel your pain every second of the way. My was hooked in my dominante right hand, I had a lure in me all the way to the hospital.

Great video & fishing, shame about the imbedded hook - ouch. This is why I always carry small bolt cutters that are capable of slicing though large marlin hooks - would make mince meat of that treble. Suggest also consider Hookem Fishing Gaffs - Diamond Series - imho far better strike rate & secure fish holding than traditional U style.

Same thing happened to the ol man at the beacons, 6kg spotty threw a pair of 4/0 suicides and one went straight through his shin, clean through. The spotty was going ballistic for about 10secs before we could get a bat onto him.

If you have a fish bat, it’s a good practice to bat them on the gaff while outside the boat, and then bring them in the boat

Thanks mate. If you're referring to the reel I'm using for bottom fishing at the start then it's actually not the clicker but the twin anti reverse those reels have. The spring broke recently so a shorter one had to be used and its really loud because of the extra pressure. The correct one is coming soon so it will be much quieter.

friend was hooked on to a mahi and 1 of the trebs went into his gloved hand, and jumping on deck, we were stunned and looked the other way becos the blood we saw we cant differentiate whether it was the fish's or my friend's!!😅🤣😂

Bag limits of 1 per person or 2 per boat don't come in until the 1st July 2023. Currently there's a closed season for southern QLD which is from the 1st to 21st of Feb and then another one from the 1st to 21st of March.
