I totally agree with you. I regret getting coilovers as daily wanted to go with rsr superdowns but heard it puts a lot of stress on the shocks so I got coils. Not only that I also had to get -new tires -front upper controls arms - rear camber arms -sway bar end links. It’s a nightmare lol

good video. I would still remain firm on coilovers. You can adjust height and dampers(RIDE COMFORT). Springs you still have to replace strut also. Throwing springs on 60k oem struts doesn't work in the long run
@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios 4 жыл бұрын
That’s true. But when you’re getting to over 60k miles you might be lookin at replacing struts anyway. But you’re correct, you definitely increase the likelihood of blowing them out the higher mileage you have in the factory struts-especially if you drive aggressively on a regular basis.

Good vid SCS, you remind me why I would prefer Springs. I installed TEIN springs on my 1996 Nissan 200SX SER back when I was a pup but those springs were not Progressive rate springs, they were 2.5 in drop springs and they were sheet, the springs would bottom out all the time. There was an option for a street setup that was progressive rate but it was only 1.2 in drop, I wish I went for those. My next 200SX SER had Eibach progressive rate springs 1.2 in street drop and those were phenomenal. Now that I am a little older and I have a 16" Q50 RS I would want a mild "Progressive rate" spring set up so I do not mess with the expensive adjustable ride suspension setup it came with. , there really is a difference with the adjustable suspension and I am not a hardcore tracker, so a street spring setup makes sense for me.

Good point, I was thinkn of gettn coilovers (Godspeeds or BCs) for my 15 vw passat sport till now. I just wanna lower it 2in (2.5-3 after springs settle), I want a comfy ride, but don't wanna spend a lot too. I don't race just drive fast on the freeway once in awhile. Great vid, thx for another point of view.
@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking in! Coilovers can definitely give you the adjustability to dial in the stance of the car, but if you're looking for a "comfy ride" you won't get it with coilovers, especially dropping up to 3 inches. I'm not sure how much room you have on the passat, but dropping it that much, you'll have to run them stiff most likely which will give you a pretty jarring ride, even with BCs. I actually just installed BCs on this car and have a first impressions video up and will be posting a 1 week update on Saturday morning. May be some useful details for you if you're considering coilovers.

I've put springs on 3 different cars. Every time, I ended up switched to coilovers, with 1 car on AirLift Air Ride. My current ride is a 2014 Q50, with RSR-Super Downs. Guess what the UPS guy brought me today...BC Racing "Extreme Low" Coilovers.. can't wait to get 'em installed. (Waited a month for them - thanks COVID!) BTW, Air Suspension WAS the best, but super pricey. Coilovers are where it's at for me most of the time.

Currently at 75k on my Q50 s Hybrid, my shocks and struts need replacement coils will be the way to go. They aren’t too many options out there so by the time you order OEM stuff you’ll be easy at 1k. Not to mention coils will destroy OEM stuff on adjustability and ride quality. On my opinion replacing only springs it’s just cheap.
@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios Жыл бұрын
If your shocks are already bad, I always recommend just going to coils because as you said, replacing factory parts is just as expensive anyway. Ride quality is a different subject--coils do not "improve" ride quality. You will definitely notice a rougher ride, but if you're going for handling, that is expected. Going with springs is not being cheap. For 99% of people, it's all they need. Improved handling, nicer stance, and retaining most of the factory ride quality. It doesnt make sense for them to spend $1500 on coilovers when they will never adjust them, never drive the car hard enough to need them, and don't care for the harsher ride. It's just a shame that Q50 shocks blow out so easily.

What could happen to the shocks over time if you put on springs and your just daily driving on the road?
@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the condition of the current shocks. If you just go with a moderate drop, they should last a long time assuming they have under 50k miles on them and aren’t showing symptoms of wear. If you’re already experiencing some bounce or you go more than 1.25” in drop, there is a potentially for one or more of your shocks to blow out-essentially bottom out. But some people have gone 40-50k or more miles with springs and had no issues.

So I have a 09 M35 RWD. There is but one manufacturer for stock shocks…..KYB for this model. I can only assume that’s the case for other Infiniti models. I was looking at the softer Tein springs w/new stock shocks. You stated no problems since your install. How many miles has it been on the stock shocks/struts? I don’t think it would be worth just getting springs and struts/shocks if they blow in 20K miles. Mine is really clean w/125K on it so….I’m looking at the Scale brand coilovers as a second pricier option.

@@vciq H&R is an excellent brand. I ran them on my mustangs back in the day. And no, springs are not just springs. Spring perches can be different shapes on different vehicles. Spring lengths will matter. Spring rates are extremely important--they may drop a 3800lb car 2 inches, but what about a 4800lb car? Not the same. It's possible that there is some overlap, but I just don't know for certain.

People always assume coilovers will ride better than spring/shock combo for a daily. Coilovers will always have a stiffer ride. Here's a tip - if your car has over 50,000 miles GET NEW SHOCKS and install with the lowering springs or you will blow your stock shocks.

Springs will be more stiff than factory, but also significantly lower. Are you afraid of rubbing or what is the question? Obviously coils are adjustable so you can make them quite stiff.

Well what I want is the car not to sag down so much so I don’t know if they sell stronger springs That can Hold all the weight in the back or do I just have to go with Coilovers and raise it up some so it to hold the weight of the passengers

The Tein Flex Z setup was shit when I first got it installed. Anyone who says it's a good setup probably has never had good coil overs before (no I don't consider BC a better product). I have to run them full stiff to have any sort of confidence on them and i still find them to be too soft. I think they are slightly better than the stock Luxe suspension but lets be honest I really got them to lower my car and I probably could have just got RSR super downs
@SpeedCultureStudios
@SpeedCultureStudios 4 жыл бұрын
Great input. I don’t personally have experience with the Tein Coilovers but have been extremely pleased with the sTech springs over the last year. They have performed as well and ride as nicely as any others out there. Question though, why is a ride at full stiffness what gives you confidence? Max stiffness is not always the best setting. Being too stiff can obviously have negative consequences when it comes to lateral traction as well as in straight line racing. You’re saying that even at max stiffness, the tein cools were still not stiff enough? Did you have them too stiff, perhaps? Just curious.
