Happy weekend!! This week, I'm finishing NaNoWriMo after getting 50,000 words down for a new novel this month. Oh... and book 4 in Rune and Firal's fantasy series releases today! I'm super excited. But you're here for the doll stuff, right?
Last week, I shared the process of casting new BJD heads for the first time... this week, it's all about the cleanup that comes AFTER casting. I'm removing flash, smoothing edges, cutting pour tabs, fixing bubbles on imperfect casts, and addressing some BIG problems with one head in particular.
I'll be back next week to share information on doing the eye closing modification you see most of the way done at the end of this video. Can't wait to see you then!

Unsure if you know this but I thought I might mention it anyway. One thing you can do to reduce bubbles, other than warming up the resin in warm water, is to also warm up your mold. Usually silicone brands mention how much heat a mold can take but in my experience a bit of heat with a heat gun works just fine. Just make sure to heat it evenly and not go overboard. Warm to touch should be good. Hopefully this helps you or anyone reading comments who wants to cast resin. Keep in mind that over heating the mold over time will cause to deteriorate faster than casting without a bit of heat. Regardless, silicone is extremely durable and any breakdown of the mold won't happen until a good amount of time.

Another thing that can help is lightly coating the inside of the mold with talcum/baby powder, the powder will pull resin in by breaking surface tension. It also acts like a release agent so the resin wont be sticking as much into the silicone so it can extend the life of the mold.

Very cool to see. Some of the smaller issues might be quicker to fill in with super glue and baking soda, put one on, then the other and it instantly hardens to something very much like resin and can be sanded, carved, drilled as like resin or plastic. Its quite commonly used in model building for garage kits etc. No waiting for putty to set.

They look amazing though. Man I wish I had the nerve to try this stuff. Bright side you have a few practice heads to play with!!!! I'm so glad you are sharing this process!! Thank you from those of us who will never have the courage!!! Lol.

I would like you to do a complete course on how to make a BJD doll of all kinds of skin colors and sizes 💔 I've searched everywhere and I can't find a course that teaches me how to do it.

Oh boy, I probably need to teach myself how to do it first! I have not done anything other than make heads and occasional replacement parts.

the head that had all the pits looked like acne! Who knew that fantasy men had a acne teenage stage?

What do you use to patch the bubbles?

For small bubbles, I use Tamiya putty white or Bondo spot and glazing putty, depending on how the head will be painted. For larger bubbles, I use Milliput superfine white epoxy.
