To address common issues with this video: 1) I am not saying ALL libertarians and conservatives are against right to repair. I am saying that a vocal number of people, everytime this issue comes up in the news, claim to be self proclaimed conservatives/libertarians who accuse me of wanting the government/nanny state involved in people's lives.I am not speaking to all conservatives - just those confused self proclaimed ones who think that I am asking for a nanny state. I am a conservative myself, and very much against large companies using the government to make repair illegal. 2) Yes, I get the definition of counterfeiting vs rebranding is off, you get the idea - both are far from refurbishing.

I think the "self proclaimed" conservatives who oppose RtR are being deceptive or do not understand politics as a whole. It's essentially deregulation, which is very much a conservative/libertarian principle; its using the government to UNDO or Ctrl Z on some existing law that inhibits freedom. I think you should take that approach when explaining it in the future, and you might have less nitwits giving you crap about it.

Monsanto did this same thing to farmers by suing them for keeping part of the crop they harvested to have cleaned and used to seed. Monsanto claimed it was their patent-and they sued several farmers and won. They also sued and won if one farmer planted their seed and some of it went over into another farmer's field on a property boundary. It went to the Supreme Court and guess what-Clarence Thomas worked for Monsanto previously so the outcome never was in doubt.

Does Apple believe that a product once sold, still belongs to them? When I buy something legitimately, it belongs to me, I can do what I want with it. If a third party replacement part, happens to be of adequate quality, it's my prerogative if I want to use it. Most older cars wouldn't be on the road today, if Apples' warped views applied. As to regulations, yes we do need some. Some regulations have been put into place to protect people, for e.g. consumer laws (e.g.lemon cars), regulations against pollution, regulations for clean drinking water and so on. These are more protections than regulations. If Apple was a customer orientated company, none of this would've even been an issue. Their focus is strictly on maximum profit, they have recently been fined a couple of billion in Europe for their tax avoidance schemes. So fuck'em I say.

I just found your channel early this morning when I couldn't sleep, and find myself fascinated by your videos. Not just the computer repair ones, but your video on why it's wrong to yell at children, and these videos that are exposing the wrong behind Apple. I have decided that Apple is the Monsanto of the computer world. Which is sad considering I learned computers on a Mac in 1993, which was in a windows environment before Windows for PC came out. The transition was easy because of that, so of course I will give credit where credit is due. I am also a conservative who supports the Right to Repair. I appreciate you so much, Louis Rossmann,, because you demonstrate powerful, critical thinking abilities, MacGyverish troubleshooting and problem solving skills, and much-needed tenacity and courage to stand up to the bullies. These qualities alone remind me not to stand down on certain issues. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to educate people on so many different issues with your videos. Thank you for your honesty and your desire to protect end-users of Apple products. And isn't it a shame we need watch-dogs to protect end-users of Apple products?

They came back and said it had water damage... and returned a phone with a broken front facing camera and mic (which was working perfectly when I turned it in for the battery replacement). Today, I decided to go to a third party repair shop and they said the Apple store must've torn some kind of sensor. There was NO WATER DAMAGE. APPLE LIED. And instead of fixing the phone they broke, they just labelled it as WATER DAMAGE so they can CLOSE THE CASE and not have to deal with me anymore. Any way I can spread this message? I'm pissed.

arsenalforlife1508 you can try your local news network. More news stores involving Apple shady practices are coming out and if your local news network deems it worthy you might have them do all the work for you. Other than that, you can try macrumors forums to add to countless other crappy stories associated with Apple.

There's a reason why Macs aren't used in gaming tournaments. And with all honesty, the bulky, sometimes edgy and the lightshow of a gaming PC or laptop and all the accesories like gaming mice or keyboards look WAAAAAAAAYYY BETTER than those cheaply made stuff Apple makes. Hell, even cheap midrange gaming mice and keyboards can withstand the rage of a gamer compared to those of Apple where single drop of sweat can void the warranty somehow.

I read that apples will have your place raided and assets seized if you do repair work like the one in Norway in the US. Is that freedom you crave and deffend where the govermant is for "hire"? I see many times govermant officals in the US are too bussy milking big corps rather bussy appeasing the people he/she represents. Govermant is supposed to be a referee and keep things a little fair for the majourity... and not a judge and referee for the minority, hence this case big companies being minority pushing laws appon the majourty of the population.. Libertarianism constantly and relentlessly shoots itself in the foot. The movement originated as a way to give more rights and freedoms to the average guy. Modern libertarianism supports corruption and bribery to get and keep large corporations is positions of absolute power. When they talk about 'small givernment', they really mean that they want the democratically elected government to be small, so that the people who actually have real power (multinational corporations), who are not elected, can do what they want and get away with it. Modern libertarianism is basically just absolute monarchy.

Very long time ago I believed the advertise and I wanted to buy an Apple product but I was not completely dumb to just buy it. I did my research and noticed that the device I wanted to spend a lot of money to be able to use, was becoming valueless in case of something wrong happening to it. Never looked at any Apple product again. The moment I can't repair MY possession the way I see fit (even if this means to break it completely attempting to fix it) it is the moment I don't buy. If I am paying it, I want to be able do with it whatever I want to and this is non-negotiable.

I am conservative but I believe the right to repair is crucial! Private citizens should have the right to say and do whatever they desire so long as it does not harm anyone else. Preventing our right to knowledge, the ability to work on and modify our own property, and the ability to voice our own rights and opinions IS HAPPENING. Corporations pandering to/buying out politicians and legislators to turn us even more into mindless consumers than we already are is a scary fact and, Louis, you absolutely hit the nail on the head when you said that this right to repair is "war" because it absolutely is! We all need to take these things seriously because if Apple is allowed to win this fight, it lays precedent for more of our right to be taken away, little by little.

I think his point is that it's the politicians who we vote for who claim to believe in the same things as we do until the lobbyists start splashing their money about who then abandon their so called principles of conservatism/libertarian. We are the ones who put them in power, we are also the ones who need to hold them to account and throw them out of office despite them pretending to having the same values as us which clearly they don't if money is involved. Only a right to repair written in law can overcome this issue.

Hey Louis, I own a little repair shop in Barcelona, Spain, and this is literally my first comment in KZfaq, and I have to write here, in your channel. What you have said, I cannot agree more, in Madrid, 2 years agos, Apple sued lots of repair shops for ¨Conterfeiting¨ iPhone Screens, with policemen and cuffs, assaulting the stores, mostly chinese, saying the chinese were conterfeiting the screen...but actually as you said, they were refurbishing the screen, because how in the gods name these poor little shops manufacture actual LCD???!!! But local government had no clue, cannot even understand the difference between Counterfeit and refurbishing, and with the strong law departement they have in Apple, what can we do? As little shitty 3rd party repair shop? How could you even fight back? hiring lawyer would cost you like 2K+ and future expenses... As I hear the words from your video, there are actually tears coming down from my eyes... Dude, thank you, and thank you again for the video and talk! Keep it up! God bless!

But because of paying tuition fee (even it’s less) + rent + textbooks I’d got almost 50k € dept as well in my final year of medschool studying here in Europe and I am earning now 800-900€/month. Physicians earned like 200€/month here in some parts of the EU when I started studying 6 years ago. Now a colleague told me I’m the Czech Republic her wage is less than mine in Romania. The EU has other advantages: safety, infrastructure, social security, better pre-university education and so on. EU companies have one advantage compared to the US. The wages differ way mor in the EU compared to the US. You don’t want to pay a French person 2000€ minimum wage? You’d move to Bulgaria and hire somebody for 500€/month.

I bought a knock off Pencil for iPad. I thank god I didn’t buy Apple’s. I spent $30 to find out I hardly ever use it. I’ve STILL got the first generation EarPods, and they STILL work 3 years later. I, also, bought a pair of $30 EarPods from Amazon. I am still using them 3 years later. I know Apple is just ripping off the customer. As far as ANY KEYBOARD from Apple, $500 for a keyboard/case, no effing way. My husband who is legally blind got used to Apple’s ease of use. He had his iPhone 5S for 12 years until it broke. No. Apple is a pure design & marketing company. The actual production of everything is farmed out to a variety of manufacturers, mostly Asian. It's not worth Apple's time to invest in their own Fabs. The actual manufacturing is a relatively low margin business. This would be why IBM sold off their PC business to Lenovo - it had turned into a low margin business which isn't what IBM does either.

Great job mate speaking out against the Crooks at Apple Mac Corp. I am in computer repair and have experienced first hand how apple treat their customers. I have owned apple products, and have been screwed over by apple in the past. So now refuse to sell their products, either new or refurbished. The tide is turning against apple. I have personally explained to customers the downside of apple products and talked at least 300 from buying Another apple product due to their unscrupulous business practices. They have choice. Be more transparent and change their business practice. Or in the end lose most of their market share. People are waking up and moving on. And about bloody time too.

Louis, Thanks to your video regarding the 12 inch toaster that apple calls a laptop; I was able to verify that the circuit you mentioned was shorting by turning a compressed air can upside down and splaying the board in the exact same spot you showed in your video. I’m a sys admin with ZERO electronics repair experience and I was able to do what I did because of good samaritans like you who actually want to empower and educate users and consumers. Also as a conservative I wholeheartedly agree with the argument you made. I don’t want government regulations, I also don’t want big corporations trying to “pull a fast one” on small independent businesses. If it takes a couple laws to actually keep the market free, so be it. If big companies play nice the government can keep doing what it does best, nothing. If they do try and behave like apple and John Deere... well they brought the regulations on themselves.

There were people like "Unsafe at any speed" Ralph Nadar. He did have a fan base. The books didn't sell themselves. Corvair was a safe and great car btw. Nadar was an alarmist. Whatever caused the over regulations, compare the cars of the 70s to the cars of the 50s, 60s. 70s was a dark chapter. If you saw the movie "who killed the electric car", I would concede that there is much debate on these subjects. State of California, GM and the consumer had fingers pointed at them. Eitherway an informed public is very important on these matters. Its good Louis is talking about this, because I was clueless abou this case. Principly speaking trademarks and copywrights are meant to protect both the customer and the creator. If a customer reasonably knows what they are getting then, the business/owner/artist is usually crossing the line suing. I would apply the same with cars. People know that SUVs may rollover but they want them anyways. Another similar case to this is the Mormon guy who was renting edited videos that took out all the smut and filthy hollywood language. He owned a licensed copy, edited his copy and was renting it out. Hollywood sued him for not showing enough filth and smut. ..Principly speaking they crossed the line. The owner clearly paid his share. The customer knew what they were getting. Hollywood didn't like it.

good point vincent, this kinda ties in with the "video games as a service" idea going around, where they want it so when you buy a product you dont have rights to that product, they want it to be a "service" cuz services are not held to the same standard as a "product" under Consumer Rights Laws, meaning after buying the product thats a service you cant do what you want with it, and also the company can change the functional dynamic of the "service" however they see fit at any time without notice to the customers that already bought their copy. where as before even if you buy a video game or a phone you dont "own" the phone as intellectual property cuz the manufacturer does but you own your copy of that device and lifetime rights to its use, which is the ideal they wanna change, in that even when buying a product you dont own it, you license its use, so it wont be long till you cant "buy" an Iphone or Video Game cuz you have to Rent it with a per month subscription. this is kinda like Renting an apartment compared to owning a house and paying mortgage, o yeah and also the gov't decided nobody can own property only rent it from us ( -_-) lol this is also why you see ppl complaining that Apple is purposely sending updates to older Iphone models to F them up and make them lag and run slow, thats not just a bad battery, (although bad battery can make a power supply problem that can cause that, but in most cases its Apple purposely sending broken updates to older models to push ppl into buy the new one) which this is all about taking a Non-Renewable good / service and trying to turn it into a Renewable good / service and in the case of a phone / electronic device its a good / product even if the software on it is updated.

ya when they got to the point saying the a Mac book is different than a PC was just hilarious, whether its a Mac running IOS or a Dell running Windows they are all PC's personal computers, but it does show well the ideal that Apple as a company (no sorry corporation) wants to push which will eventually affect everyone in other forms of business, even if you never buy a phone cuz you can be sure other corporations that make products will do the same thing, before you know it you wont be able to "own" toilet paper, you will have to rent it from the store as a service. . . well if so that service better come with someone to wipe my ass xP

A lot of companies do that, normal red t shirt can be cheap and make alot of money due to how much you sell, slap a logo on and jack up the price you won't sell as many but now what you do sale makes you more per sale and the people that own can flaunt the overall worthless logo. Different business models, most smart people that just care about performance would leave the latter though.
