@@jsmoker10 thanks for the sub! 🙏🏻 working on this video at the moment. I initially filmed, but after starting to edit - I learned that it definitely wasn’t clear enough. So I’m gonna end up filming this one again this week, likely Tuesday. With the goal of it being done before the end of the week. There’s a ton of nuance to it, so I wanna be sure to cover it all. If you want a head start, check out my console classics sessions pack. It’s got a guide on how to mic an acoustic using the console session presets I built. It’s got a DI, 3 mono mic’ing setups, and two stereo setups. Tested with a ton of different mics for each preset. If nothing else, it shows you some industry standard ways of tackling processing, and mic positioning. I’ll end up covering this stuff in the video too. Cheers!

Claas Marienfeld I create busses and rout my tracks into busses. I use to have tons of track in my session that could be processed the exact same as the other and rather than loading up a new instance each time, I can route the tracks into busses where they’re all processed as if it were one big track. I usually have 4-5 busses per session so that’s sufficient for me! I’m gonna make my mixing/mastering video here soon and I demonstrate this process in it

On latency... I was hoping to get total RTL figures for both, especially with the Apollo console's delay compensation feature turned off and the mixer sends all empty. But the point is well taken - when the total mixer latency of a DAW gets high later in the mix (such as when using high-end limiter plugs on the master bus, or using intensive plugins like Acustica plugs), native interfaces like the MOTU require some workarounds, like low-latency modes that disable plugins like the one I just mentioned. However... when using the Apollo console mixer outside the DAW to reduce latency, if there are high latency plugins on the master bus while recording, there are some DAWs (like Logic) that will record the audio out of sync with the rest of the mixer tracks, by the amount of the total latency on the master bus. Others (like DP and Studio One) position the recorded audio in sync. Something to be aware of.

As an owner of an Apollo X16 and X4 desktop, your comments were very accurate and gave a great overview. Obviously there is so much more you could go into detail about the pros and cons of UA stuff. Having an Apollo X Desktop as the last in a chain of Apollo X converters gives me the opportunity to use it for remote recording such as tracking my Steinway Grand with just the mic pres on the UA or unrack my AMS neve 1073 DPX pres which I have done in the past to track piano. Looks like Thunderbolt is here to stay with TB 4 now being implemented at the same 40 gb per second transfer but I believe with the ability to attach a tb dock to a tb4 port to get multiple more tb3 devices connected. I plan on getting a second X16 for more D/As to my analog mixer. After that the UA hardware madness will stop. Your UA videos are very informative.

Dude, love this comment. Thanks so much for the support and for the feedback! I try to be as thorough as I can be, but like you said - you could reallyyyy go down a rabbit hole with the UA stuff. We shall see what happens with TB4. I’m personally kind of frustrated with Apple continuing to do away with peripheral I/o on their computers. Dongles are the bane of my existence right now. I too plan on expanding my rack and Apollo rig for sure. However, the madness will never stop haha! 😆 Cheers mate!

Hey steve , love your honest reviews. I'm searching for my first interface to buy. These days there are the new volt series from UA , what would you do spend a bit more for the solo are go for one of the volt serie? I saw the volt serie has a vintage button. Is there a difference in getting plu-ins for one another . Thanks in advance Andre pellecom Belgium
@TheSteveKinney
@TheSteveKinney Жыл бұрын
Hey Andre! I hope the search is going well, just finally getting to all my comments. If it were me, and I knew that I only needed the 2 inputs and two outputs, there ARE some advantages to going with the Apollo. Mainly in the DSP arena, being able to run realtime processing is a HUGE benefit when your project is towards the later stages of production and you have a big mix. but outside of that, - I would largely say that the Volts are in a safe space. They sound great, and the vintage feature is cool. The solo is going to be a better AD/DA, but is it going to be the thing that makes you win awards vs not win awards?... nope. We all have more processing power than the Beatles now.. so it comes down to your song, the arrangement, the performance. In other words, a great performance into a crappy mic and interface is always going to sound better than a bad performance into an $20,000 mic and interface, etc. hope this makes sense! Cheers!

Hey Steve, I currently record on a 10year old scarlet 2i2 usb-Interface and want to upgrade my setup to a more professional one - starting with a new interface whic should be reliable and serve me well for the next 6+ years of my production journey. As I now have the chance to buy a used (1y old) apollo solo from a local recording studio for 400€, i was wondering if you would recommend doing so or if I should rather go with a cheaper interface (e.g. Audient Id14; SSL2+ Or even AUDs Volt 276)? I heard that with only one chip, the solo might run into problems with the DSP plugins, but as I would most likely only use the free plugins one gets when buying the solo in the beginning, don’t own any analogue gear and mostly record vocals (rap/singing), I don’t know if this would even be a problem for me. Basically, would you recommend buying the solo - and is it a great interface for long term use or just a gimmick for professionals that wont be worth it for me as a semi-professional (personally I heard everything from totally overpriced and wont be able to deal with the plugins to a total game changer and recommended if one is serious about recording). I just really want a well manufactured, reliable interface and am kind of struggling to find some good information on this. Thank you in advance!

I just ordered the UAD solo, its on its way. I see how its great for tracking vocals or guitar with low latency, which is why I bought it. Now is it also possible to track MIDI VST instruments with low latency as well? For example, lets say you have a bunch of tracks in a project and you decide you want to put in another VST instrument and play the keyboard, is there a way to record the midi and have the sound come out with very low latency as well? That is the issue I have right now with my SSL2, is that after having a bunch of tracks, when I want to record a new instrument, I run into latency issues. I'd rather not have to freeze and bounce when I have that many tracks, and my DAW actually doesn't have a freeze function either (Mixbus32c).
@TheSteveKinney
@TheSteveKinney Жыл бұрын
Yeah - so. Complicated. (Kinda if you never done it before.) Take the output of your track - and route it to a stereo virtual channel (virtual 1 & 2) and then your synth signal should now show up in UAD console. From there process as needed. Then create a new audio track in your daw with that same virtual channel as the input. Now you can record the signal just like a mic. The pro tip - perform the midi itself first - and lock that to the grid /edit - then just playback the performance into the processing before actually recording. This way the recorded audio is perfect. Etc. Best way I can describe this via messaging. Cheers! Steve

@TheSteveKinney

You can most definitely get better AD/DA. However, the Dynamic range is better on your current interface vs the Solo. Where you in particular would see a difference is at a twin x level. Reference the tech specs in the hardware manuals for your interface vs others. However, it's shockingly close for the Solo. I'd even say that the difference is quite negligible. What you will gain in additional to better converters and less THD - is also the Unison tech. Which is pretty neat. So you can voice over with different compressors ETC.

The main benefit of the Apollo is the fact that you can run pre amp emulators for real-time tracking with near zero latency, which is comparable with the real deal hardware but at a fraction of the cost. If you already have a real Avalon pre, you may not need an Apollo unless you want to experiment with other classic emulators like the Neve 1073/1084, Manley VoxBox, etc.

I had a few RME interfaces and now have an Apollo Twin mkII. Hands down the RME stuff have "worse" specs BUT.. The RME interfaces actually sound better. Jitter supression is much better on the RME stuff especially with the SteadyClock they use. It just sounds so much tighter with a deeper sound stage. Also The RTL is better at the same buffer size on the RME and the drivers are also better letting me have more plugs running at same buffer size than on the Apollo. I'm switching back to RME with "lower" specs. It just sounds better an I don't need to record through expensive plugs.. Thanks for the vid! 😊

You’d have to get creative with how you handle your input and output routing. But it’s one hundred percent possible. So. For example. You’d have to unplug your monitor outputs and then send only the signal you are wanting to work with out of the Apollo - to the external effect unit. And then back into the input on the Apollo. At this point. It is crucial that you mute the input signal while recording OR route the signal only to the headphones - so that you don’t feedback loop the signal. Cheers!

Legitimately, I use the solo all the time. Why?... because I love how it’s bus powered, and I have a noisy space, so I travel and then I mix with my x8 and certain rack gear when the mix calls for it. The solos pres when combine with the unison plugs, and sound are down right next level. So whether you go twin or solo - you aren’t gonna be disappointed. Now more specifically, if you’re just needing something for a good signal chain for vocals and then maybe some processing here and there for your mixes, and are good with being able to commit to sounds as you mix (like you would with hardware or outboard gear) by all means - solo is gonna be a solid route. If you are going to do a lot of post processing / then the extra dsp will go a long way. Either way. You’re gonna wanna rock the Apollo’s. I came from the m-audio, focusrite, & tascam interfaces myself. Would never ever look elsewhere. Hope this helps brotha! Happy to answer any other questions. -Steve

You have to change inputs 1&2 to outputs 1&2 This is because most basic apps, including zoom etc only see the input side of audio devices and thus it sees signal only coming from input 1 out of 2 which would be the left only channel. Go and rewatch universal studios office hours episode number 95 the cover this exact routing in depth as well as explain it. Cheers!

Yo Jazi, Thanks for your comment! Great questions. A lot to unpack here. Having had Art Pre's, and compressors personally, I think they are great for "bang for buck" kinda of situations. And creatively, they are another cool "color" choice (keyword choice) for getting sounds and tones. However, I will tell you first hand. The difference in sound quality between the setups you're referring to, long term and short term, will ultimately blow your mind. The Neve pre's, SSL, API and other mic pre Unison plugins are absolutely incredible. Once I heard them, and used them on some projects, I literally sold off my old ART hardware, as well as some others. Actual technical quality difference between the AD/DA between the Motu, and the Solo - winner here is the Solo again. Long term, once you start collecting more UAD plugins, you'll be able to jump to different mic pre's that are 99.5%, and in some cases EXACTLY like the real world counterparts, for pennies on the dollar comparably. Now, if you go with the Motu, what will happen, (and it happens to everyone) is that eventually, you will want to upgrade to something different. For either quality reasons, or simply for different sounding textures, you'll want a different mic pre, which means you'll have to get more hardware because the Motu doesn't offer hardware emulation of mic pre's. It's just a dry standard pre. Now that I've went with UA interfaces, I'm crazy happy. I have everything I need in AND out of the box, but if I need to travel, I have all the same hardware available to me with my Apollo Solo. If you're on Mac, you will also have the advantage of the new Luna Recording system, which is shaping up to sound damn good. Ultimately, at the end of the day, it comes down to how you use what you have to make something sound good. So the best interface is the one you have. Create something cool! That being said, I can't recommend anything other than the Universal Audio stuff. Hope that helps clarify! Happy to answer any other questions! What mic are you using currently or will be using?

@@TheSteveKinney Thanks for your answer brother. I agree with you that it is more about what we achieve with what we have than what we have. I'm asking you because the laptop I have doesn't have a thunderbolt, so I don't know if an apollo usb suits me. The microphone I bought is an Aston Spirit, and it sounds super good. I really think that with that microphone and an m2, in addition to knowing what I do in the mix, it could sound very good, but that's what you say, I don't want to fall short so soon, I want to invest wisely so as not to spend more in the future man

@@jazi5466 DUDE! Amazing choice of microphone. I’m gonna pick one up for myself hopefully soon. Did you know they were used on Noal Gallagher’s high flying birds last record? Amazing mics. Anyways, I’m sure you’d be quite happy with either setup! Just remember, if you went with the USB solo, you’re investing into a platform that will continue to grow and evolve. You’ll likely upgrade your computer at some point, along with your other hardware. If you get the ART, you can always keep it and use it for creative choice, although you’d likely retire it eventually as you grow in your setup. Also!... maybe look into reverb.com to pinch some extra pennies too! Could be a good resource. Again, personally, I’m bias at this point because the UAD Unison pre’s sounds incredible. I don’t think you can go wrong, just have to know it doesn’t support Luna, nor bus power. I try to make clear that sound quality wise, it’s incredible. Just more nitpicking on my drawbacks. If you don’t have plans to get a new computer for a while, that might help you decide. Hope that helps!

Yes, it IS true. However, I think they genuinely overhyped the significance of this interaction for years. As far as I know I’m the only channel that tried to point this out to the degree that I tested it. There IS a difference, but it’s very small. IMHO, I wish they would have been more honest because the interfaces are still one of the best possible ones out there regardless… they could have just stood on that leg on its own.. but I digress. Marketing departments love to spew BS all the time lol 😂 Anyways, the devices and the features / routing / AD:DA… all superb. The unison thing is fun. The DSP is helpful for sure. Everybody's talking about zero DSP latency. I can not speak for other people here, but I am interested in an audio interface that handles native monitoring well too. My question is basically, how do the Apollos compete with most recent low latency interfaces for mixing, monitoring and playing Midi instruments in the DAW?
@TheSteveKinney
@TheSteveKinney 2 жыл бұрын
The interfaces themselves do not ever do anything for latency. That bandwidth problem has been solved with USB3.0 and above. The low latency bottleneck is really gonna come from your PC or Mac’s capability. That said - with Luna - the latency while using arm would be the same as using console and UA plugins. With an exception - any native non UAD plugins will be disabled. So if you go non ARM mode then it’s got a noticeable delay that you can’t adjust. NOW that said - with other DAW’s - you’d be able to use low latency mode and with that - you’re not gonna find a faster bandwidth than TB3. So it would come down to whatever your computer could handle at that point.

I mean - it’s a single shark chip - so it can run as many plugins as the DSP unit will allow. Doesn’t struggle to run what’s loaded in its DSP. It can however, run short of DSP if you start tacking on a bunch of plugins. That said - check out my video on how to make a song from start to finish with nothing but the Apollo solo and Luna. The device is really capable and what I’ve said to others still stands. If you think of it like a piece of outboard gear, where you process your sound, move on to the next one - it’s incredibly powerful. Knowing what sounds to commit to is half the battle in the first place. Cheers brotha!

The latency measurement is a little misleading. You're not monitoring through your DAW, so therefore it's actually like direct monitoring, only using UAD plugins on that direct signal. I can't put other plugins on my live monitoring signal and monitor with such low latency, I can only do this with the UAD plugins that I own. If, for instance, I'm singing a vocal into a project that is already half mixed, and I have some awesome vocal chain set up in my mix, I'm not monitoring through that vocal chain while I'm recording. I'm monitoring through the one that I've set up in the UAD console. Now, I say all this without owning the device. I'm wondering if there is a wet/dry blend you can set between the UAD console signal... and the DAW signal., just like you can do with other interfaces between the dry direct signal and the DAW signal... ??
@TheSteveKinney
@TheSteveKinney 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah - I mean you bring up a really good point... that is to say - at that point, you'd be comparing the power of your computer itself truly... especially if you're talking about logic, PT, etc... Inside of those DAW's, as you know, the latency is determined via the DAW's settings... being that it's a thunderbolt device, it's gonna be super fast even in that regard, but latency at that point depends on the computer... a big session or even particular plugin chains are gonna bog down the latency, not the interface. I guess, I just didn't figure that was relevant since pretty much all interfaces act the same at that point. The bottle neck when monitoring through the DAW is and will always be the computer, the bandwidth of TB3, TB2, USB-C.. are all high enough to have really really low latency's... it's the computer, again to clarify. Now that said, I guess the whole point of the UAD-2 eco system is that their plugins would be used over others in most scenarios. And truly, especially with regard to things like compressors, reverbs, delays.. .(at least if you're a gear nut like me).. there really isn't a better software candidate than UA. UA has the best sounding 1176, La-2a's... yes, this is all arguable, but I mean.. I don't see a point of using a random blue strip style compressor, w/ fab filter, & other random digital delays IF ..and I say IF... you have the UAD system.... sure, in post - I'll use Fab filter and do some corrective stuff with de-essing, but no need to monitor with it, half finished mix or not. If you had one of these, and you loaded up a Unison ssl 4k, added a blue strip or rev e,... through on a lexicon 480L or 224... you'd understand.. it really makes you not wanna ever go back to anything else. Being able to direct monitor, print/record your preamp emulation, while non-destructively monitoring w/ the arguably the most detailed recreations of historic pieces of gear AND still be able to do all your post processing later - that's a win IMO But that's just me, and I'm only one man, who isn't always right. Cheers mate!

I knew before I got it that with only one dsp chip I wouldn’t be able to run bunch of uad plugins at same time, but that was ok cuz I would never spend that kind of money on plug ins anyways. I mean considering the motu is about 1/3 the cost of Apollo I think it holds up quite well to be honest. The specs u read off are solid with the Apollo being better just not 3x better. The motu also has director monitoring and loop back which I had on my 750$ baby face pro that the solo does not which made it great for streaming audio I had also used the TB3 Apollo arrow before they rebranded them the new solo devices. I think for the specs and the money in that 150-200$ price range the motu is a great option and for someone looking to get their studio going the money saved on the solo could be used elsewhere instead of buying spending hundreds more on the solo and then the uad plugins which can use quite a bit of dsp power which my push u into buying more into that ecosystem. Also unless uad improved their windows drivers or motu too then the latency figures that they give are kinda an ideal. U may have to run it at 96khz at a low buffer size to achieve that result and if ur using a terribly fast computer u may not be able to run larger sessions on either interface with out turning up the buffer size at that sample rate meaning more latency anyway. great review but for the price comparing 170$ to 500$ I’d better hope that the 500$ interface has better hardware specs but I don’t know so much about UA software cus my usb2 rme has much better coded drivers than my thunderbolt arrow did had way more stable performance at lower sample rates and buffer sizes but that was also a pricier interface.

I want to record vocals with compression and reverb in my headphones, with no noticeable latency, AND have the compression print but NOT the reverb. The Solo can do that. The M2 can't. Who sings flat in the cans with no effects? A little reverb can really help vocalists. So can a little compression. The M2 would be useless to me. I am happy you actually improved your audio in more recent videos because this was atrocious and made it hard to watch. With that said, I think the main culprit here is the price and audible differences. Personally, I feel the only upper-hand the solo has here is the plugins it comes bundled with. As far as sound goes, yes, the solo comes out on top but not as much as people make it seem. The law of diminishing returns applies to studio equipment as well, especially with the ever-evolving tech. I think for the common consumer when we talk about entry-level gear, there are many viable options out there other than UA like Presonus, Focusrite, Behringer, M-Audio, and more. I believe that is where TY was headed with his video. For the Prosumers, that is where UA comes in, as well as others like Audient, RME, Apogee, and some of the aforementioned brands that produce higher-end equipment, just to name a few. Although I will say, his biggest mistake was making specs a base for his reasoning. Never base a judgment solely on specs!

@@vmi4172 totally dude. The solo. The twin. Either one of those is gonna crush if you mainly use other plugin platforms. That said, UA’s interfaces have a muuch better sound than so many others out there. Until you start getting into the really expensive stuff - nothing compares IMHO. You’d also get the added benefit of being able to use their plugs in the future or the unison pres. It’s cool stuff. Since you’re not all too involved or invested in the UA platform, I’d say - look to a used Apollo solo or twin from guitar center or something. You could save a few bucks - and you still get the standard plugin bundle after registration. Hope this helps. Cheers!

The stupid thing is, USB-C is not the issue. It could power the entire unit much like Thunderbolt 3. Maybe they didn't do that because having high power over USBC is still uncommon compared to Apple. Still a bummer. Wish they offered power over USB-C as well as having a brick for those who do meet the requirements.

Look if you ever tracked with any uad audio interface you will soon realize what a nightmare it is to setup a punch. let me explain. you put say your neve mic pre and la-2a and a reverb... great on the way in to record... so now you decide to do a punch on the vocal. but wait on playback that neve, LA-2a, and reverb are not on playback. oh okay then either have to setup virtual playback channels with another 3 plugins... but guess what you dont have enough processing power to do that... your out of DSP (on a solo) the only way the uad system works is if you print the fx on the way in. Now we are back to 70's recording techniques ( thought this was the future) the whole system is lame. I owned a twin and a satelite. I sold the twin. the satelite is cool, because they do make great plugins. but there recording systems suck. thats why they built Luna... on Luna it works the way you would expect it to, without setting up to sets of plugins and doing crazy routing. But who the hell uses luna, if your old fart making old fart music luna is great. total 70's studio ready to go. for you more modern types skip the whole dam system.
@mosesmusazi
@mosesmusazi 3 жыл бұрын
Just to understand your argument are you saying that on the solo you can’t playback your vocal track with your vocal chain already setup with just monitoring? It’s just going to be dry meaning no processing or anything when you do? Hope you can clarify this for me
@gotyor
@gotyor 3 жыл бұрын
@@mosesmusazi it would be dry/un-processed on playback... But if you set up the exact same plugins that you used on input channel onto the virtual playback channel on the UAD console...and setup the setting the exactly the same you can make it appear to sound the same as it did on live input. But now your running a bunch of crazy routing out of your daw creating this complicated loopback to the uad console. Life to short to deal with all that hassle. so most people just print the live dsp fx onto there track. so the track on playback has the dsp fx (mic pre, compressor) forever printed on the recording. Or you can do what i do now which is use a fast computer, fast audio card with low latency and use almost anybody plugins and never have to commit anything to the recording. and you can change anything and everything at any point in the process. I use a clarett audio card, on cubase 11 with fast plugins that dont add latency... most slate digital/or stock cubase stuff adds no latency and it all cost a fraction of a UAD card

The Unison Tech is useless. Why? Cause Plugins are catching up so there is no need for an Apollo. Especially with M1 MacBook Pros and New PC coming out. Apollo would have been good 20 years ago when computers weren’t at their peak or early 2010s, Mid 2015 but nowadays we are living in an where there a Supercomputer with better DSPs and better value. RME > Apollo. UAD will be obsolete and they know that…that’s they took the first step when they released the Volt Interface. UAD great brand, they’re interfaces are good but not worth it especially in todays world.

There are a few points that I would wanna sit down and really write out. However, I’m on my phone and I don’t have time. The main one, You have a fundamental misunderstanding of what unison does. Microphones have a physical electrical resistance whenever you plug them to a device. This isn’t something that computers model. This is physical electricity. How much or how little resistance is known as impedance. Microphones dramatically react differently to different impedances. Sometimes in a good way, sometimes in a bad way. Famous gear has very specific impedances. Unison mic pres match the impedances of the units that are modeled. So when you use your mic with it, it is literally reacting with different electrical resistance. When you use the Neve 1073 plugin in the unison slot on an Apollo, your mic behaves physically like it would if it were plugged into a real 1073. So. This isn’t something an m1 or a supercomputer could model. Nor would you want it to. It’s not just phase shift or eq shift or an IR. I suppose you COULD at some point. But you’d have to have a different model for every mic out there and at all the different gain settings to capture the non linearities. This is a physical real world change of what your microphone is doing. That said ... I could get into the logical trap that these new m1’s have you in ... but again. I’m not on my computer LOL my thumbs are dying. For starters just watch the opening quote of any apple keynote address for the last 20 years. “Most powerful ever...” is the usual line. The only difference now is the architecture is new an unproven, the only proof is their own benchmarks. Not to say that they aren’t powerful. They are. What I’m ultimately getting at is the financial incentive. You really believe apple is such a generous company that they obsoleted their 10k professional workstations with a new technology AND decided to make about 9k less in the process?... The m1 is an entry level computer. Give it a software update after all development for current mass adoption has stopped (Intel) and you will see. It’s not gonna be any different than buying a $1k a year or two ago. It’s not a supercomputer. Just a computer. Anyways, I totally get where you’re coming from and appreciate the sentiment. Just wanted to share my POV as someone who makes a living as an engineer and a cinematography. Cheers bro! 😎

@TheSteveKinney 2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate! I understand that you’re not as far down the rabbit hole of music making as others.. You’ll get there eventually. I make many points, but impedance is not the primary point - although it’s damn near the most legendary. It’s the whole reason the Apollo’s are so sought after... It’s a variable impedance. So - as you load a neve mic pre - it chances the PHYSICAL resistance down the line to your microphone. Which has a physical real world impact on the source of your sound. The plugins take over your Apollo and match it to that of the real hardware. Then on top of that - the AD/DA is considerably better. And then to complete the picture - the gain stages are modeled and interact with your device physically as well. It’s. A. Better. Device. ... period. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Side note. I think Ty is a great dude BTW.
